Really?? 10 years? Strewth - I was still in full-time employment in May 2006!

:-))
Already know you dates ?
-
Probably May 28, 29
-
Martin.............is there anything nearby in the way of high street shops that 17 and 19 year old girls could spend their time for two days, they don't drink smoke or club it but like to shop, and what is the hotel situation like around those parts.
neil.
-
A couple of travel lodges. But I'm sure someone from the wicksteed club could find some b and b places locally or you could camp! That way you come to the bbq
-
will it clash with beale 2016 too ?
-
That's up to them. Mayhem is set in stone in the date.
and where were you young man

Guy was out camping with the family at White Mark Farm ;)

thanks for that Klunk.....will look into it for next year......sadly camping and I are no longer compatible due to my back and arthritis.........but will look into b & b ........just got to look around for something for the girls to do for two days, lol

Sorry if this has been asked before but are Petrol boats allowed on then lake at Wicksteed?
-
Yes: :-)
1. Phil or Bill need to give it the once over (for 'elf & safety) first.
2. It's not fast.
3. If it is a 'fast boat', slow "demo" runs are permitted under rule 1.
-
ah okay then - best leave my latest project at home then ok2
Thanks
-
martin . i think maybe there should be a time slot for fast boats and only one or 2 on the water at a time following a course ... the point being . they are still model boats maybe 20 mins each day or something .....
maybe something to think about for the future ! ... personally id love to see some fast boats have a go at a course or something .. and i dont even like them lol
-
Sorry if this has been asked before but are Petrol boats allowed on then lake at Wicksteed?
Hello.
Whats inside it ? If its petrol then a fail safe that cuts the HT off would be good. A fail safe to fully closed position check will always be carried out.
Having said all that there is next to no room on the lake with all the stuff on it so you just cannot open up any high speed boat this includes Fast lecy boats.
I did take my Makara Zen powerd boat out for a demo run on the lake but even me being a Ex OMRA / BMPRS racer found it hard work to keep it going.
Still it would be good to see your boat doing some SLOW runs during the weekend So YES why not.
-
Alrighty!
Good idea Ian! Bill - It has an RCMK K600S with a gearbox splitting it to twin props :-) It has a killer Bee fail safe in it. Ah okay - I haven't seen the lake. I was going to go this year but somehow I missed that it was on!? Yeah I would bring it next year if it would be of interest.
-
just got to look around for something for the girls to do for two days, lol
Why is that?
At our home the women cook, make warm the water for the coffee, do the dishes and in the evening in the bed.......... they sleep well

Take a look at these. My bit starts around the 3 min time with my boat and the next link will be the on board cam.

And this is what I did with a Zen powered Hydro at the Mayhem meet in Llanberis North wales a few years ago. I think its was doing around 50 MPH Its hard to see but the boat was about 5ft long, Now that was FUN FUN FUN !
One more of my makara at Llanberis

Just to clarify. IC boats are NOT normally allowed on the lake at Wicksteed.
-
OK... Steve? Nick? Chuffy?
-
Just to clarify. IC boats are NOT normally allowed on the lake at Wicksteed.
Would we be able to get an exemption just for that one weekend of the year ?
-
Right just to clarify
Under normal circumstances WPMBC doesn't allow I/C powered boats on the lake, however, the Mayhem weekend risk assessment does include a section covering the use of said boats for a limited time and speed on the water. As long as they don't exceed 15mph on the water and have a kill switch, which is accepted by BillD203 or Steamboatphil then you can use it when we've cleared the lake of other model boat sailors. They usually stay on for about 20 minutes and this usually repeated two or three times a day.
-
Thanks Nick.
-
OK... Steve? Nick? Chuffy?
Sorry Martin, my foot slipped !.......Sorted by quick Nick........Alan. (Skeleton Crew)
-
No problem... get the beers in!
-
How about a group build for the 10th anniversary?
-
Simple rules.
40 inch and under
any type of power
must be built with Mayhem in mind. Ie a boat with a gazebo on top etc
-
If you stayed on Sunday night you could of been with us talking about this
Over a few drinks.....
Battle springers!!! Think robot wars
-
Did ian come up with that idea?
-
I have a set of rules for demolition boats that I could amend for springers. Just build rules to make it fun.

Fun, FUN! This is war mate!
Were looking at spinning saw blades, flame throwers, the works here %% %%

We had ramming prows

Ok with percussion caps added
P's you saw what happened to Ians springer when the turret moved!

Lol. That was my idea.
I'm well up for springer wars.
Although. Bear in mind. That I now have all my explosives back
-
well 10th anniversary it is in 2016
SAME WEEKEND AS THE LAST 9 YEARS!
28-29 MAY 2016
BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND.
-
Battle Springers.
If I remember correctly, we discussed some very basic suggestions
1. Standardised size for springer O0
2. Made of balsa only (easily destroyed) <:(
3. Anything goes except ready made power tools (you need to invent something really diabolical) %%
4. Last springer sailing in more or less one piece is deemed the winner. :-))
This could be fun {-)
-
Springer wars sounds like fun.
Might be worth having a weight limit as well, just like robot wars.
It is worth someone doing a quick tutorial on how to enclose all the electrics in a butty box, or otherwise waterproof them, to save them.
Will you allow flame throwers, blow torches? It may be an advantage so strong that it becomes the only real weapon of choice, and thus defeats the fun.
An alternative, if some think Springer Wars too destructive, labour lost etc.
Springer jousting. Just need to knock the superstructure off of the opponent. With a standard for size and fixing of superstructure (or not fixed down) and standard for lance. Superstructure can have a uniform shape but then be painted however.
Just a thought.
-
Jousting sounds fun.
I'd be up for full on battle springers but after giving it a few hours thought some of the truly dangerous ideas I've come up with I can see it getting rather out of hand given another 11 months to work on them! <*<

I have read your post and fail to see the problem {:-{ {:-{ {:-{
It's model boat mayhem!! And you should see the things that I have came up with for it %) %)
1 thing is banned would have to be live ammunition.....
Not because it's dangerous I can get some "good" stuff but Nick may get some cannon rounds going spare from the Tornados <:( <:(
-
The other thing with jousting is that people who already have built a springer, only need to change the super structure for the event. There is no need to build a special sinkable/destroyable model.
You only need to change back to play springer football.

I also. Now have all my explosives back after having them confiscated by the police lol
But to make it fair
I think we should go along the lines of robot wars. No explosives.
I'm well up for doing this. But as big bri said. There should be a standard set of rules to follow regarding the build of the tug it's self. Not the weapons used
-

Personally I think there should be a rule stating that you MUST build a destroyable tug made from balsa wood
I don't know if you seen my springer at wicksteed. But you could run over it with a car and it wouldnt break as it is so strong
-
Working on 3 sets of rules
1 jousting rules
2 springer wars
3 springer football
Once approved by the steering g committee ie Martin I will post them
-
I am getting really concerned about all this destructive stuff. I hope the rest of us get warning time to pull our scale ships out before that starts. A bit like the high speed huge lifeboat a couple of years ago, swamped us all with its six inch high wash.
I am quite capable of building a boat to sink realistically without having it sunk by others. :embarrassed:
-
Working onsets of rules
2 springer wars
No projectiles everything else goes!
Now how to fit that chainsaw on a turntable and those Bunsen burners to the springer....... %% %%

Of course we would give out a warning, I think....... {-)
-
A warning on the lines of -
"Would Mr Klunk please bring the net to the centre of the lake immediately!"
{-) {-)
I like the idea of balsa Springers! How many layers of fibreglass matting are we allowed to put on the inside? %) %)
-
I hope the rest of us get warning time to pull our scale ships out before that starts.
Don't you build warships Bob?!?!!!
-
Children children. There will be no projectiles or explosives allowed in springer wars. There are build rules. Simple ones. And one weapon per boat. Last man standing is normally down to the most shock proof and reliable electronic set up. We done it our club a couple of years back. It's very hard to hit another boat let alone a killing blow. The winner was the boat that was still going after 15 minutes! Yes my motor blew up up as well. Put a 12v battery in it with a 6V motor! Doh. Mjnd you it went very fast till the smoke came
-
klunk, you never got the memo....
Standard springer design Balsa hull,
No projectiles
Weapons YES as much as you can fit on a springer !!!!
Winner is the last one floating
And both the Geneva and Hague conventions do not apply in springer wars!
for bob k a 10 minute warning so he and others can run to a safe place
To watch the carnage
Prior to sailing bets shall be taken on the winner at the Scottish stand
Prize money goes on more beer ;)
-
What about a frame and an 8" x 8" square of paper on the transom.
Springer with least holes after the bought wins!
Put it on the front, voilà, jousting!

hmmm i have some 40mm thick balse think I win.
there will be build rules.

Three certain "gentlemen" ( %) ) who were present at the Mayhem bash sent me a small momento of the event...(those of you who frequent Facebook will understand this instantly)...thanks to Ian Mccaffrey, Darren Carter and Martin Kinghoward for their kindness and their generosity. Their gift now hangs over my toilet door as a lasting momento...it seemed to be an appropriate place to display it. ;D
I shall never forget you, my dear friends...my revenge will be swift and savage. <*<

hmmm i have some 40mm thick balse think I win.

I was thinking the same about rules, and thick balsa.
Perhaps one needs to think about a practical design spec, then build one to see if the engineering works out. If it was all balsa there is a possibility that a strong motor would just rip a chunk out of the floor.
Possible solution, but it would need to be tested. If the bow, stern, and bottom are made of the usually ply, it should be strong enough not to collapse under its own weight. If the sides of the hull are balsa, then that would be the point to attack, and defend in your own boat. Perhaps specify 2mm ply. I also seem to remember that balsa usually comes in 50mm wide boards. That itself poses construction limitations.
In addition to no projectiles, or explosives, I would also consider no fires. Wicksteed management may have an objection to that on environmental grounds (polluting the water), and safety (combustibles in an area open to the public). If the latter is raised as a safety concern it could affect the future use of steam. I know it sounds dumb, but we have all seen incidences of the like in the hobby.
-
The idea is to have a reasonable amount of carnage and fun without losing money with sunken boats. I therefore suggest another alternative.
As the springer would contain the usual motor, battery, esc and rx, all of which are not only valuable but highly allergic to being drowned, that the hull up to and including the deck coamings are made from standard thickness ply.
The deck opening could even be sealed with some sort of plastic sheet.
This would give a strong, durable base to carry the main purpose of the exercise - the weapon(s) and a destructible superstructure!
The superstructure would be made of light balsa and the purpose of the competition would be to destroy this superstructure - NOT sink the whole boat!
The weapon would need to be designed to smash the top without wasting power beating against the tougher hull. You would still get the carnage without the loss of electrics and radio gear.
The winner would be the last one with the most intact top.
The same hull could also be used for jousting by changing the superstructure to a "lance" and hinged "target" (ie army type shooting target) which would remain upright until struck by the opposition "lance" when it would fall backwards. Both opponents would be at either side of a divider (rope through pipe insulation). The winner being the last target upright.
-
I personally am AGAINST all this talk of lets have a war on the water etc etc etc...who is going to clean up the lake afterwards, all I got to say is remember all the MESS that happened after Ian did a explosive demo on the lake at Mayhem a couple of years back.....bits of polystyrene everywhere........WHY damage a model you have spent hours building doesnt make any form of SENSE to me.....it will sadly end in tears with cries of foul you CHEATED ETC..
Dave
-
Absolutely right Dave, we don't want folks going round enjoying themselves, do we!
-
Danny common sense prevails here nothing to do with we don't want folks going round enjoying themselves, do we!
Klunk spent well over an hour clearing up after the display and tbh there was still a lot od fross the next day.........
The way this is heading with this crazy idea it will get us BANNED off the lake....
All we need is someone to call down from the Wicksteed Park and see us behaving like HOOLIGANS and the event will be HISTORY
I am not a party pooper by a long way BUT come on lads COMMON SENSE PREVAILS or cant you see it.
How do we know Wicksteed management don't monitor what goes on here and see this MMMMMMMM
Dave
-
Moving on then!
-
I am sure I have seen somewhere a jousting type Battle ( For want of a better word). A lance with a small wedge or ball or something where you have to knock off a an item of a floating target.. These are not structural Items to the boat but something placed on for this, Ie a polystyrene cone .. But can I find it now, no.. >:-o No damage, no mess so should keep everybody happy , especially any one from a management group %)
-
Don't worry about mess Dave .......................
And I'll volunteer to help clean up no problem
I think Dave is expecting boats to be flying around the lake like idiots smashing everything up and ruining it for everyone
Well I'm sure that's NOT what's going to happen
And you can't say what's the point in spending loads to loose it all. It's not worth it. Bla bla bla. Surely you have seen robot wars. Or banger racing. ?? You do it for fun or enjoyment.
If you don't like it Dave and your not going to participate in the event
Then I suggest that you let the ones who are going to do it enjoy it and let them waste money building it.
Me for one. WILL BE BUILDING ONE !!
Moderated. Admin
-
Just my opinion
Everyone is entitled to one !
-
Wind up merchant! <*<
-
The other thing is how many will participate in events.
It might be worth running a members poll, just to estimate level of interest.
Martin, can one be done with multiple questions or check boxes instead or radio buttons.
There are a couple of people on here who would be up for a destructive competition. But if they are the only ones we would not have much of a competition. Although a demo could be done and maybe attract more for next year if people are interested.
There are at least 3 voices, mine included, who think something less destructive may be better for several reasons.
- people might be happy to watch others smash their boats, but not do it to there own. And not have to build a special boat as well.
- upsetting Wicksteed by messing up the lake or presumed reckless behaviour.
- keeping it simple works the best,
Jousting is feasible, there are many variations on the theme. But perhaps a set of slip on/replacement superstructure provided by the organisers for the event would make it easy for anyone with a springer to bring it along an play without any special preparation and ensure fairness.
Perhaps some other fun/skill competition could be devised to work with a slip on/replacement superstructure.
-
Moderated, Moderated. No need for profanity or insults!! I've said it time and again but a demolition derby can take place. Those that enter know the risks to electronics. If they were not prepared to loose them then they would not enter. A few talking about carnage etc have never seen or entered this type of competition. They think along the lines of cars etc with bits falling off. The main reason model boats fail in demolition derby is electronic or mechanical failure.ie the boats stops dead and can no longer function. At this point the boat is perceived to be dead and removed from the competition. 99% of boats fail this way. I have never seen a boat actually sunk in competition. Get real guys there will not be bits if boats floating everywhere like after Ians explosion. (And as I remember it was me that cleared the majority of that up) boats will not be sunk in droves ruining electronics. Those that want to enter do so at their own risk. Stop voicing pc killjoy attitudes. There are build rules and weapon rules. If the owners don't meet these rules they don't get to play. Simple.
Please tone down your language
Bob
-
Has anyone suggested balloon bursting ? Either static or attached to a rival boat for the joust. A needle on the bow and one little prick etc etc %) :embarrassed: Balloons to be secured firmly to boats and static pylon or buoy, no polystyrene bits to clean-up.
-
Right lads
Klunk and his team hasn't even sorted the rules, etc yet and to boo hoo it before it's been drawn up is a bit unfair on them. Everybody has an opinion but I remember the 2008 springer tug battle and how I was the first to be knocked out (me being a biff not ensuring the battery lead being on tight enough), it was a fun clean fight with no sinkings.
The park will be informed of our intentions via an interview and the risk assessments and if they disagree they will tell us there and then. As long as it's covered by the risk assessment and the mess (if any) is cleaned up they will be happy.
What Klunk and his team need are constructive criticism and ideas, please support them , and if you don't want to take part then that's entirely up to you but let's have constructive criticism from now on not boo-hooing.
-
:-)) :-)) :-))

I, along with a couple of others, was one of the first to come up with this idea, it was done in good faith and with a bit of enjoyment in mind.
It is totally obvious that safety is paramount, its obvious that a fair bit of planning would have to take place and its also fairly obvious that everything would have to be approved by those who organise this great event.
But.... as always on Mayhem, its taken a wrong turn, if I`m totally honest? I knew it would, it always does!!
I`m fed up with the negativity shown at times, an idea doesn't even have the chance to progress before its knocked on the head by someone.
So ..... I`m afraid I won`t be taking part in what will undoubtedly be a fun event, even "IF" it`s given the chance to progress >:-o
-
thanks corporal nick.
I have a set of rules already drawn. am making a mock up hull to ensure rigidity before I post anything.
now above was a suggestion about pins and balloons. A thought was discussed a couple of weeks back about this doing it with straight runners.pin on the boat and a balloon tied to Phil!! we nearly dismissed the idea but thought......naaaahhh we couldn't deprive Stavros of chasing Phil down the straight running course with one of his super fast straight runners. Dave the challenge is laid down. if Phil wont be a target I will!
Or another plan could be balloon on the back of any boat and a pin on the front. last balloon unpopped wins a prize.
One thing Stavros did say and I do agree with him, I dint want to spend an hour cleaning the lake.
If anyone has ideas please PM me with them. All ideas will be given due consideration and put before a committee. If we have lots of ideas coming forward I will make a vote of which ones you want, but with anything like this we need ideas and people committed to actually entering them. If we don't get your support then its just a waste of time and effort.
I am looking forward to next years mayhem and want it to be the best yet. And hopefully, we will not have a repeat of this years CAR sagas. Im expecting to see those that missed this year due to circumstances beyond their control. Especially Stavros, cos Phil just wasnt the same without his straight running buddy! in fact he converted to sailing a yacht!!!
-
Wind up merchant! <*<
not a wind up merchant at all mate
I'm just strait to the point
And I also think it's unfair that you moderated my comment about stav. Fireworks and static displays for next year
-
Just trying to keep the peace Ian... :-)
Let decide what we actually want as far as events go next year for Wicksteed.
There no point in setting out a whole series of events with rules if only a few people are interested.
As TT says, demonstration events are one thing but mass participation are entirely another!
I think the only thing we've agreed on so far is that whatever even we push, has got to be popular with the majority.

im in :-))

From someone who's idea of a sensible craft is a bright yellow rubber duck ..... I'm in for jousting (and maybe partial destruction) :-))
-
Just to throw it out there, how about springer fire fight :-))
Simple yet effective idea each springer has a fire moniter (waterpump) tow a simple box (icecream tub or similar) with the aim to sink the tow by filling with water from the fire monitor.
Would be good fun and general public im sure would get wet too all be it in the name of fun after all.
Just my input to the mayhem.

that would be a good idea .
especially if people dont want to build a tug for it . and could use the one they already have !
-
An excellent idea JB. At this rate these Springers will be the most versatile boats ever! {-)
-
I assume you fill the opponents icecream tub, they are all scrutineered to be the same size and not fitted with covert buoyancy :police:
You could start with full icecream tubs, Springer skipper to eat the icecream before attaching to springer, time penalties for slow eaters {-) {-)
Ned
-
Hi Klunk
Count me in too, looking forward to the 'battle'! :-))
-
A similar idea, a water monitor/cannon duck shoot. Like at the seaside.
Cardboard cut out targets on a floating platform. (maybe more than one set at different parts of lake, could be re-use of steering course)
Some kind of barrier to maintain distance.
Boats have to race across lake to the targets and shoot. If using the steering course then the targets can be place around the steering course.
A set time to knock down as many targets as possible, if all knocked down then the fastest to do so.
-
I am up for a springer battle, though I would rather not actually sink the boat or let the magic smoke out of the electronics.
Remember Mayhem is all about fun, if the risk assessment covers everything we are going to do and the park are ok with what is going on.
Let the fun begin
Brian
Nick I will write the risk assessment earlier next year to cover all eventualities (promise)
-
Hopefully the risk assessment will include
Risk - injury to ribcage due to uncontrolled laughter
Mitigation - ... er ...
So, moving on .. ;)
-
Just been reading up on to demolition springer, I'm a bit disappointed with the lack of support, so far I can make out five people who would take part, the four of us from Scotland and big bad ian, big bri came up with some simple rules. Made out of balsa, standard size which I believe there is plans on this site, no power tools, weapons have to be made, all the rest is up to the builder, surly by the the name, people would get the idea they are taking the risk of there boat sinking, if your worried about cost don't take part, event can be done at the end of the day, I'll join ian in the pond cleaning up and I'm sure others would as well, I'm with big bri if it's watered down from the original plan I'm out, people who won't even be at the event really shouldn't have a say, it's for the people who are going to attend.

To be honest. I totally agree with all aspects of your comments.
I'll happily build one to make a total loss of it including electrics and what not

-
Stick to standard size....you never know what might turn up :o
-
standard size springers. I Will be posting build rules soon with the weapons rules. They will be non negotiable about certain weapons. If you are unsure then you can pm me for clarification.
Please be aware that it will be the builders responsibility to ensure that electric are waterproofed to stop damage to them in the event of a sinking.
as I said before most boats will be put out of action by mechanical or electrical failure.

The rules should be no bombs and at the end of play Saturday, all bits picked up by people taking part and the winner gets a grand prize.
-
Quicker reasponse than me Pete, it should be made clear if you don't want your boat broken don't play. Are the wickee boys happy with this?
-
it should be made clear if you don't want your boat broken don't play. Are the wickee boys happy with this?
Well, I will not be playing, and may give Wickee a miss next year.
As it is far too many shows within reasonable distance are on the same weekends.
-
Bob shame you are not going, tenth anniversary for mayhem, it's gona be good, that 1-3 hour trip for all of the English lads is Shite, but us from Glasgow lads have been going five years on an average 8-10 hour trip over the last five years, last year was a record 8 hours, the year before that 14 hours. Hey we love mayhem and what it does, Martin if my boss knew how much it cost me to come and see you she would sat no. But tell her your a great guy. Get our kilts from last year on the site.
-
Only been up for a couple of hours and all you lot can do is moan. Bobk we spoke last year about your situation and I fully understand. Shame as really want to see Poly working properly but I can wait till Black Park.
As opposed to all whose whining about no bombs etc get a life. It's demolition derby, not let's go bomb someone with and aircraft. Demolition derby is about making a boat robust enough to withstand knocks and bashes. Go and try to sink a boat with 2.5mm balsa sides. Not as easy as you think. Once a boat is immobile it is out of the competition .
As opposed to debris there should be none to very little. If a boat sinks it can be recovered much like any other boat that sinks.
-
Sorry guys, but the key incentives to go to model boat shows is to meet good friends and generally drool over their model making skills. Sure, I get a lot of hints and tips plus plenty of ideas on how to improve my own techniques.
Page after page of this thread, going back to June, seems entirely focussed on how we can destroy each other's models. If I appear to be the lone dissenting voice, so be it. This could take up a large part of whatever day I am able to come. If you all want to concentrate on destruction, fair enough, but it holds no interest for me. Apologies. I do love Wickee . . . but . . .

Any way. Come. Don't come. Don't moan
Either way it's gonna be great

other one missing the point.
It's not about smashing up your beloved model. It's is about. Building a springer tug specifically for this event. For god sake. It don't even have to look like a tug
It's going to cost a few quid do build.
Stick all the electrics in a plastic sealed container. Or condom or something. That way you don't loose your beloved electrics
-
Bob and Dave,
While this is on it seems a great time for just having a chat or hot drink.
Bob
-
I always enjoyed watching Robot Wars, even though I wouldn't/couldn't build a fighting robot.
I think most of us enjoy seeing things get bashed. It should be fun to watch others competing, with or without a cup of tea in hand.
-
Whilst anyone who does not want to play smash the toys in each others prams is termed a "grumpy guts" I feel we are in real danger of having many serious modellers voting with their feet. Sad.
-
How about
Springer tug with fire monitor on the front and a water container on the rear?
Challenge is to fill you opponents containers while avoiding getting you own filled.
Winner is the one with the least water in their container.
Obviously the container would have to be a regulation size
-
I AM TRYING TO DO SPRINGER JOUSTING!! But I cannot figure a way to keep a shield on and the joust without it breaking all the time Ideas??? it should fit a springer tug!
Another idea is a pin on the front of CLUB 500 AND A balloon on the back...any takers?
Any ideas for the yacht guys other than racing round a set course???
I'm also looking for a tug to tow around a tub of chocolates any takers for that one.
I also think we should resurrect the HAWIAN SHIRT!!!! or STAVROS in a dress!

At the end of the day we have normal some not so normal models. So if you think it's a stupid idea then take your self to the other end of the pond where I'm sure something else will be going on
Or why not go to Mrs mayhem and grab ya self a coffee
-
So if you think it's a stupid idea then take your self to the other end of the pond where I'm sure something else will be going on
Never Said it was a stupid idea, I was just offering a suggestion
I guess I'll just keep my ideas to myself
-
Guys
This was discussed at great length by the organising committee and it was decided that it was the best simple idea that didn't need any extra equipment to participate with. The whole "battle" would only last 20minutes maximum with 10minute tidy up, they will be in a separate area away from the main display area so no non competing vessel can get involved or any competing vessel to leave the battle zone. This is just a small part of the weekend and there will be plenty of other serious events such as the warship display to commemorate Jutland and WW1 era ships.
Please, please come to the weekend, even if you don't participate in the battle, as the following weekend I'll be flying out again to this hot and dry miserable place for 12 weeks, 12 hour shifts again!!! I will be fighting my own management to get 2017 off because they say I'll be going out again over the time covering Mayhem weekend and I want to see all my good Mayhem friends again just incase.
-
As per usual on Mayhem, things just get totally out of hand and ends up a fiasco!!!
Its perfectly simple! if you don't want to take part in this spectacle, then don`t!
I`m sorry, but members shouldn't rubbish something just because they think its not for them. For goodness sake, let those who DO want to take part in this event, go ahead and do it.
I`m sure those taking part will thoroughly enjoy themselves and the public too, no doubt O0

Operating principle
the spring 1 prevents accidental contact.
This spring attached to the target 2 is at + battery.
The target 2 is a metal plate.
When the lance of the opponent hits the target it can be stuck on the magnet 3 and is glued.
Electricity passes.
The LED lights up.
The buzzer makes its noise

People are just making suggestions for other events that could be held at some point. No one has mentioned that any of these should replace your event
Klunk mentioned about the jousting and Gazou simply suggested a solution.

Goddammit confused by a french man (no offence! )
Did someone try to Insult me?
I asked for suggestions. Although overly complicated it could work. But I was thinking of something generic that I could knock up a couple of dozen of to fit to boats at Mayhem.

Bit late coming in on this, and my first post for a while, but…
Can I just point out to the people put off by the 'battle' idea a couple of things. As already said, it would be a tiny portion of the weekend, it'd be a bit like saying you're not going to the Warwick show, because for 15 minutes they've got a model car ferry on the pond and you only like tugs or something.
My 2nd point, will be quite harsh. Sadly, model boating has an image of old me sat in stripy deck chairs and knotted handkerchiefs, counting the rivets go by. As the members get old and die, the hobby is dying with it. Sailing scale models at a scale speed in a big circle, isn't really going to capture the imagination of the young, and inspire them. Something that's A: cheap, B: relatively easy to build, and C: is actually lively and fun to use when it is done, may well just encourage them to then make something else, and something after that etc…
-
Hmmmm that's a thought. ......
If we could get 10 springer kits together then we could do demo builds by different people over the weekend. Any takers??
-

Nice to see things don't change around the arrangements for a fun weekend . What with being out in Oz for a few weeks im a tad out of touch.
Im not sure if i can make it to Mayham next year but im sure it will be fun. :-))
-
Perhaps smaller scale springers and perhaps give away a printed sheet of templates so they can take something away, and for a few pounds get some balsa and some non toxic covering (Deluxe materials resin).
If a pair of tights were used instead of glass cloth/matt then this might add some hilarity to the proceedings and may encourage Mum to be less negative about 'Little Terry or Megan' making a mess.
Maybe even do the builds on a newspaper covered surface so showing reluctant Mum that boats and other things can be built on the dinner table without being messy. Is the springer design a liscensed one?

is it really that easy to build a springer tug..... you guys make it sound easy
are we talking scratch or kit ?
-
I built my super springer (standard hull with 90mm kort and prop, 555 motor on 3-1 gearing) in a little under two hours, plus paint and superstructure. It really is that easy, if you're any good with a jigsaw on eighth ply you can cut everything you need to make it in minutes. Why not have a go at making one? If you pre buy everything you need for the model, plan out how you want everything to fit together and mark your cuts in everything you could have one done over the weekend

As a newbie to Wicksteed
I would like to attend with several boats some of which are fairly heavy!
What is the format for parking/ distance to the waters edge and do I need to bring a table etc?
Thanks.
-
Hi ex docky
You're more than welcome, and hope you enjoy the weekend, there is a car park less than 100 yards away from the lake edge, there will be trolleys available next to the car park for transportation of boats, if you need any help just ask.
With regards to tables, I'm in the process of organising with the park, at the moment I suggest if you can bring a table with you it's an added help to us so you can ensure you have a table, tables usually disappear very quick!
Hope to see you there :-))
-
Can anyone reccomend a B&B in the area?
-
We've also tried parking cars in the lake... but after a brief trial, we withdrawn that facility. %)

Ballast - there is a Travel Lodge on the A14 a couple of miles from the park. They're usually a safe bet for cheap rooms.
-
Thanks Danny.
Yes, it looks good to me!
Ta for the nod, you beat me to it by a quarter hour.
-
Hi Ballast
Re Accommodation near Wikis,
Yes Travelodge on A14 Westbound, with a Little Chef on site.
Premier Inn with a Brewers Fayre directly off JJunc 7 of A14,
A Holiday Inn Express on the A43 ( watch the Sat Nav as this was the A6003 until last year) They have a Harvester next to Car Park
If you are feeling flush there is the Shire Inn next to Junc 9 of A14
These are the closest to Wikies
Hope this info is useful to you.
-
Thanks Diesel man :-)) I will be booking soon when the money fairies have sprinkled me with magic tokens:O)
-
hi everyone
Once again Wicksteed Park management have given us a 25% discount on the campsite fee. :-))
To take advantage of this deal please quote that you are a Model Boat Mayhemer when contacting the park to book your campsite.
The discount starts Thursday morning and finishes Monday night over the Mayhem weekend, there is an area cordoned off in the main campsite for our use for this time period, for those who have not camped before it is the area just to the left of the main campsite entrance closest to the model boat lake, you can't miss it.
On another note, there will be another event in the park over the weekend (a wedding reception) that may have a majority of tables that we usually use, until further information is received (confirming) either way can I please ask if you have room for a table with your boats please can you bring it with you.
There will be some tables available for us but numbers are not guaranteed until closer to the weekend, tables will be reserved for the Scottish detachment and Martins tent (yes the tea hut!) and Wicksteed Park MBC will be bringing as many as we can muster. Many thanks. :-))
-
Not long to go now! :-))
-
Anyone else staring at a pile of half built boats and thinking they aren't even going to have time to get one finished in time to take?
I started them all with the best of intentions but it seems I've been overtaken by time!
-
Yep, fingers crossed that my current build will be 90% complete for the weekend! Should be a good weekend, don't forget the campsite discount just incase everyone missed my last post on this thread.

If I can get my driveline tested in water then I will make a good go at getting HMS Ready looking like a destroyer!

Hi everyone
Only 40 days to go until the big tenth anniversary of Mayhem at Wicksteed, a big achievement in any model boat show's history.
So come on guys and gals, bring plenty of boats to sail, bring a sense of humour, and laugh at a few nutters who'll wear anything! ;)
Plenty of things to do, you can even bring the family (if you so wish!!!)- they can visit the park or go shopping in Kettering.
Loads of room to sail and display your fantastic boats, many, many other mayhemers, clubs and traders to talk to about boats!
Just remember
Have Fun
on
May 28th and 29th
-
Since the questionable management of the beal park show have clashed with Mayhem had the cheek to say Mayhem is not a show and sat on there dates for nearly 11 months. Would it be wise to give a provisional set of dates for the 2017 show. So that beal show will NOT clash with the better Mayhem show for the 3rd year on the trot .
John
I will be supporting Mayhem show.
-
This is all getting a bit silly, verging on the nasty. "My show is better than your show, therefore we will always clash - so there."
There are only three nice outdoor shows within reasonable driving range of me during this year.
Two seem to always clash on the same weekend, the other (Alsford) is the weekend afterwards.
With an ever aging and slowly diminishing number of model boat enthusiasts this is massively counterproductive IMHO.
Why can't event organisers simply TALK to each other, which may benefit everyone
I will probably be banned from this site now !
-
mayhem weekends for the next 4 years
27-28 may 2017
26-27 may 2018
25-26 may 2019
23-24 may 2020
as in the past people have said that Mayhem weekend moves around, yes it does.......because the May bank holiday is the last weekend in May!!!
Enough said.

Nicely done Klunk....how's that for notice! :}

Whoop! the 2020 dates fall on my birthday.

Given that you are a busy chap with a family, show stuff to organise and the forum to manage, I reckon it unlikely. No harm in trying though :-)) :-))
-
or cut all the pieces out and we have a go at building it over Mayhem Weekend!!!!!
-
Just been quoted £30 per night to camp at Wicksteed! Now that's a complete rip off!!!
-
What the hell?!
I'll have words, it should be no more than £16 per night with the 25% discount which I agreed with them at the beginning of March.
Leave it with me Klunk
-
Thanks Nick!!! She didn't sound sure yesterday when I phoned
-
Also nick, Can someone check out the Mayhem BBQ
-
Right everyone
Camping information again- just spoke to Wicksteed Park management to sort this out.
Telephone: 01536 512475
Then wait and select the option number 4- this will put you through to Flo at the main reception desk.
State clearly that you are Model Boat Mayhem and this actually entitles you to an almost 50% discount per tent!!! (I didn't know that the price for the Bank Holiday weekend was £30-35 per night!). The price you will pay will be £16 per night.
I have just confirmed again with the park about the email I had agreed with and it still in force, please use the phone number to book your camping site and not the online booking system as this kind of discount is for us and us only and can not be claimed online.
Thanks Guys and sorry for any confusion.
BBQ is safely stored in Steves storage shed above the garage, nice and dry and ready for the weekend.
-
Apart from ourself and a Mac, what do people reccomend brining to the mayhem weekend? A boat and tools etc to manage it will make the time a little more enjoyable. I was going to bring a deck chair.
-
Not in any order....
Chair, collapsible table, hat, weatherproof coat, gazebo (so you can take part in the gazebo fly competition ), mug for a cuppa from the tent (saves using disposable ones supplied) brown sauce, gloves, more warm clothing, a huge sense of humour, a translator for the Scotish contingent, the Welsh contingent are house trained!
If camping the weekend......A very large sense of humour, the capacity to endure the Mayhem BBQ. Be toilet trained, a sense of direction (ask JayDee), an ability to pick up litter at 6am in the morning, a cast iron stomach to drink drink Welsh whiskey, an ability to smile in the total face of the ludicrous, (past events include hunt the haggis,BBQ tables, slug racing in sleeping bags, watching Steamboat Phil eat salad for the first time in his life, watching the Scottish Contingent drink mead and the after effects, firewater, watching tents blow away (last year),
MAINLY THE ABILITY TO ENJOY YOURSELF NO MATTER WHAT. ......EVEN WHEN YOUR BOAT SINKS!
You WILL NOT NEED WADERS TO ENTER THE LAKE! For safety reasons there are dedicated named people who will rescue any boats that sink. Piggy backs across the lakes by request!
-
Thanks for that Klunk. I am staying in a local travelelodgey thing so I will observe the slug racing and keep the Welsh whiskey to a minimum %%
The sense of humour is always close at hand.

Hello.
Just booked in for the weekend, dealt with the famous Flo!!, no problem with the lower price.
Now need to find the detailed maps of the Park and the local area!.
Cleaned the Sat Nav and will give it a good chargeing up ready for the off !.
Hope the weather improves for the Event, at the moment it is terrible.
John. :-))
-
There should be a park map on the Wicksteed website
Ned
-
It's ok JayDee. We will put a line out from your tent to the toilet to help you!
-
Thanks Klunk - - - you are a real Pal !!!!!!!!
John. :-))

Hi JayDee
This should give you the Park Map
http://wicksteedpark.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/063_MapInfo_Leaflet_A4_2pp_Sprin (http://wicksteedpark.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/063_MapInfo_Leaflet_A4_2pp_Sprin)
Not sure what help the Sat Nav will be after the park gates, as there is 147 Acres of Park to get lost in. Need a Big Big Ball of string Klunk,
If map reading is a problem head to the valley bottom that is where the wet bits are!
-
I am staying in a local travelelodgey thing so I will observe the slug racing
In the first (and last) one of these I used, we were placing bets as they slowly climbed the wall of the bathroom..... :o

Hi diesel. It's an in joke for the campers........on a need to know basis. What happens at Mayhem Normally stays at Mayhem or surfaces after a couple of years.

TRavelodges don't have a minifridge so your safe from the Scottish Contingent.......can't speak for JayDee.

Point taken!
-
Those beggars did, too. They were beaten at the post by an asthmatic cockroach, so all bets were void. These days we stick to betting our pennies on raindrops running down windows - it's more reliable in the British "springtime" (and a lot faster) and vastly more entertaining than Saturday night TV.

They probably don't have string either so unless I find bed sheets shredded and tied together I can assume I won't see JayDee except at the event.
If I find any Slugs, I will sell them to the Hedgehogs.
-
Hello,
I would like to point out that the Scottish Contingent are big friends of mine, and I do mean BIG !.
So just watch what you say next !!.
John. 8)
-
hi looking to come but are there any disabled parking and how far from were you are please as can not walk far
-
The car park is 100yds from the lakeside. Disabled parking is not really needed as this is dedicated carpal for the event although it is generally agreed ghe nearest spaces are for disabled. There will be trollies to transport bulky stuff and just ask if you need help.
-
Not too get on Klunk's pet corn or trespass into Mayhem Camper matters of slug racing or string, may I qualify your advice to Spike re access.
The car park is on the grass which while flat is not or bowling green quality. The rest of the route is on a black top pathway to the concrete surround of the pond. The route is level all the way with a very slight rise over the narrow gauge railway line. Take it steady and you should be fine.
-
Dont quote me but I have not seen any tarmaced or hardstanding carpark within the park that is available for use by the general public. The hardstanding car0srk I have seen is always cordoned off and nowhere near where the boating lake!
-
Unfortunately not, all but one are grass. The lonely Tarmac car park is the one near the attractions and pay kiosks. However the grass car park we use does have a hard standing beneath the grass for the first couple of rows so it's pretty solid just there.
Update...
The water looks pretty good for quality and due to the new anti goose netting the model boat lake is very clear of the dreaded droppings. :-))
Campsite all sorted, bbq already to go, Dreadnought almost ready for steam trials! :}
-
To all campers and those brave enough to want to joj had evenings entertainment, please remember that Mayhem has a BBQ for use in the evening. All are welcome to use it, just bring the food you require. If your lucky I will even cook it for you.
To Danny, you cannot photograph the Klunk BBQ Building this year without me knowing! Hope you are coming this year! More wine required after last year!
Ps Nick, last year you said you were going to stay over.......and the answer is????
-
Yes, Of course I'm staying the Saturday night, wouldn't miss it for anything! :-))
Many thanks for including me again, I'll bring some sloe gin for everyone to try this year, got a bit more kick to it!
-
All booked in :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Not sure when you were last at the pond Nick, but there are plenty of goose droppings at the moment and a pair of grumpy swans.
As you say, the water quality is good.
Simon
-
if you compare it to previous years Simon, I was there yesterday morning with the broken down Dreadnought <:( , and the amount is significantly less than I've seen over the years. Any way we brush it away for the show :-))
-
booked in!!!
-
Just to give you an update on the Scott's lads attendance at mayhem!!! We will be there %%
Only three of us this year. We're leaving the quiet one at home. Hope see the usual good crowd there for the camping, jay dee, stav and the family, Steph and her apprentice phill. Klunk and the rest of the gang and hopefully some new faces too.
For those of you unsure wether to camp or not, we don't bit and your safe cause ian won't be there. {-)
-
Cool, I'll bring some meaty goodness.
-
Martyn , klunk et al
I am disappointed in the apparent lack of inclusion of new faces to this thread. "It is on a need to know basis.... for campers" and then the comment about the grass parking areas is written by some one with knowledge of the Park.
Klunk if you are a stranger to the Park and Event who has issues walking ground conditions / surfaces can be an issue that ma make or break a visit. You say the are trolleys etc just ask for help etc. Sometimes folks with challenges wish to be independent, to do it on their own, while others will be pleased of the help. MAybe you guys should get the blinkers off and embrace the whole community and not just the BBQ ing Campers .
Sorry if this sounds grumpy or off hand but I do not feel welcomed at all!! Not the level playing field I have come to know from modellers everywhere else.
-
Hi Dieselman.
I do not think there is any intention of excluding anyone.
Access at Wicksteed is very good. You can drive right down to within about 50 metres of the lake.
The parking area is indeed grass but very flat and well maintained and does not tend to get muddy.
There are smooth paths from there to the lakeside which has bench seating and a couple of fixed picnic tables with seating.
I am sure you will receive a warm welcome should you decide to attend.
Simon
-
Dieselman
I'm sorry to hear about your disappointment and I'll reiterated:
The paths are level and flat for what grassed areas can be, the concrete path around the lake is as flat as you are going to get from those who laid it 15 years ago, and the front row of the grassed car park we use is generally given to those with walking issues.
The BBQ is a big event for some, me included, and it will talked about more than some subjects.
If you view previous years of the show you will see it's a bring a boat and sail it event with a few planned events in between the free sailing. Models will be on show in the respective club tents/gazebos and we have two traders attending, Deans Marine and Linkspan Models.
Everyone is welcome and I hope to see you there
Nick

Hi DM,
Mayhem at Wicksteed is a fun 'come sail your Boat’ weekend for blokes and their families. You've spent all that time building it... put it on the water!
It's a very relaxed weekend.... unless the wind gets up then it's usually gets exciting very quickly, we've had Gazebo flying contest in past years! The Camping & Bar B Q is a big part of the event and is a highlight for those types foolish enough to indulge in such things! ( As you can tell, I've yet to be persuaded of the wonders of sleeping in a mobile room on wheels or under canvas! ) %)
The pond is a purpose built model boating lake in the grounds of a privately owned public park, like Alton Towers but without the need for a mortgage to get in! There is a car parking fee but that's the only charges for the weekend. There are quite a few fairground rides for the younger type humans as it is very much a family orientated 'theme park.'
We're situated down on the left hand side of the park, follow signs to "Mayhem Event" or "Camping field".
Parking in about 40 yards from the lake on a grass field. There are usually a couple of trolleys around to haul your stuff to the lake side. You are welcome to set up your own gazebo lakeside, personal, club or Trader Free of Fee!
It mostly free sailing with some demonstration events, e.g. Straight running, Warships, yachts, Springers, etc.
Most people are on 2.4Gig these days but there is a Frequency board for 27 & 40Mhz.
Best of all, Free TEA & COFFEE all weekend ….. if I can persuade Mrs & Little Miss Mayhem to do the honours again!
The whole event was conceived to get us of the internet, away from the workbench, off our collective arses and go sail our boats and actually come meet with one another! It has always been a well humoured events, one of the best laughs I have all year.
…. we’ll even pull your car out of the lake if needs be!
Martin - Admin :-))
-
There’s more to this weekend than the BBQ although from reading the thread you would be forgiven for gaining the impression that this was the highlight. (It may be for some.) However, at the lake there is no clique and I have found everyone friendly and helpful. I have attended all but one of the events and had a thoroughly good time on each occasion although I have never attended the BBQ ( I agree with Martin on tents and caravans.) Come with an open mind and enjoy yourself.
-
On a side not perhaps we should have a separate page on parking and the basic layout of the park for those only attending on the day. Maybe with pictures to show the car park area and the lakeside.
-
I'll see what I can do this weekend for photos of the areas mentioned so everyone can get a general view :-))
-
... from last year.

I just Googled Wicksteed Park and would you believe it the satellite image must have been taken on a Mayhem weekend! - check out the marquees...
Hopefully this may give an idea of the distance from car park to lake for those that have not been to the park before
Regards Jonathan
-
You know I have walked round that lake loads of times and always thought it was oval in shape!
-
Thanks Jonathan
You beat me to it! :-))
-
Also the picture is quite old. Look to the right and the new amphi theater is not even under construction plus look in the camping field and the new ablutions block has not been built! That puts the pic at 5 plus years old. Not that it's a problem as the park has improved since then! Especially down to the model lake as the new pic above proves.
-
To give another perspective on the distance - this image shows a distance line of 75m from one part of the car park to the lakeside
Regards Jonathan
-
I like the look of the kart track!

Cheers martin, I hated that picture!!!
There me being helpful and carrying someone else's boat
And it happens to be a TUG and you get the camera out <*<
Unfortunately I won't make this years <:(
I hope everyone enjoys themselves, it's stupid to say behave :-))
I read the last few posts on this thread about new people turning up and Comments about being unwelcome etc. we all go to have a laugh and Enjoy ourselves. As part of the Scottish contingent we easily get caught up talking to friends we haven't seen sine the year before so if you turn up introduce yourself and talk to people don't stand in the corner watching just say hello.
I should also point out if you want a meaningful conversation with the Scottish contingent best left until after lunch... Once the haze is moving on :-))
-
hi
this is local to me, if i bring along a couple of boats with electrical problems anybody have time to look at them with me and give me some guidance.
also any club 500 racing on the day ? i have a couple of boats i could put in .
-
come along and we will all look at your problems......we always take the mickey BUT we ALWAYS help. club 500 can go on the lake anytime, walk around and find a few other 500's and im sure you can have a race!
or alternatively explain the problem on here and we can try to sort it out now!!

It would be nice to know who is who for those of us that have never been able to get there.
Perhaps Martin could ask permission from those he takes photos of to post their names even their Mayhem logins.
-
Hmmmmm, on Mayhem privacy is in the purview of each member.
I'm happy to post photos of their ugly hansom fizog but it's up to each individual if they want to be named.
It's quite different culture to Facebook .....

I did say ask permission so if they are happy we would love to "meet" them

If you feel unwelcomed there ( which reading between the lines I find that if you are prepared to muck in and enjoy the revalry you would be most welcomed), try visiting the club at Fleetwood on a regatta day.
You would be made to feel more welcome if you were poo poo in a swimming pool.

Come, sail, enjoy, drink tea and coffee, meet like minded peeps, take the Michael out of the brown teletubby, sail some more and have a laugh. There is no level playing field other than enjoying yourself. Sit back and let the Magic of Mayhem wash over you. Join in conversations or if you can find me, borrow my Atlantis for a spell. I know Chuffy will have a go again! I will happily let anyone sail her over the weekend. Now all you have to do is work out who I am!

I remember that bloke in the footage taken last year. I am not sure if he is tired or very relaxed. Probably both given the look of the film and everyone having a good time.

Tony was just resting before lifting all those barges and the tug for a quick meander round the lake. :-))

Seems to be a lot of members here from the East, but not the Far East, like Kings Lynn!
Does anyone know if the Kings Lynn club has fizzled? I can't find it anywhere.
Or maybe the one that used to meet at Mepal water park?

Mayhem is all about FUN, this will be the third one I have had to miss knee operation recovery this year means long drives and kneeling are not allowed. Which I am really p@@@@d about.
When I get there I turn up with a car load of boats, gazeebo and stuff and enjoy the whole weekend, even if we get a bit of the Wicksteed mist (rain), or the gentle breeze called Force 8. It is like I have never been away, everyone is really friendly.
Do not be put off by the BBQ talk, only the crazy ones amongst us talk about what we can remember. Believe me it can be hard to remember, the evening BBQ.
If BBQ food is not for you stay awhile and chat, the food & alcohol are not mandatory.
The boating comes first it is very informal and fun, everyone helps if boaters have a problem, fires run away boats the only rules are, there are no rules, other than the obvious safety ones. Put the boat in the water and sail.
In 2007 the first year Martin had this crazy idea, which is the Mayhem weekend. I turned up with one boat, a Springer and some camping equipment. I only knew the people online, and had never met the people who were there, we had horizontal Wicksteed mist all weekend and everything was soaked, but it was great. I meet the same people maybe once or twice a year outside of Mayhem, and we chat and joke like best friends, it does not stop after the weekend. Ten years on and I wish I was coming no matter what the weather, I already had the Friday booked off at work
The parking is great, access to the lake is really easy nice and flat, there are trollies to use, and if required there is always someone there to help launch the boats large or small.
Did I mention it is all about having fun!
Have a good time everyone
Brian

That was 8 years ago! Yes it's a lovely lake. It's one of the few places in Norfolk with hills and is like a mini Windermere, if they still use it.
Last time I was there (for a beer!) I was told that the chap I spoke to had never seen a model and he was a regular dinghy sailor.
But I'll see if Mr. Crome is still about.
Actually, I like the idea of using the Walks if that hasn't been wrecked again.

-
Come on Martin. ....you know you want to!!
-
And Steamboat Phil!!
-
I would have thought a purpose made model boat pond (which usually means a model yacht pond if it WAS purpose made, back when) would be with the water higher than your boots, a la Norwich or Dovercourt, especially as model boats has always been an old fart activity.
Martin
-
I believe it was built as a round the pole boat pond
-
The lake is fed from I believe surface water from the fields, there is an overflow pipe which drains into the big lake in the park. If it rains really hard the water does get a bit higher, but usually it is about where it is on Phil's waders. I have never measured it, but I would think the water is about 200mm below the concrete path so easy to launch models of any size
Brian
-
I was thinking more of the water being behind a wall so that you simply reach out and place the model on the water, a la Norwich.
However, if it was indeed intended for tethered hydros (which I doubt, as I have never read a report from Wicksteed) then you don't want any backwash from sides higher than the water (a common though largely groundless complaint about Victoria Park).
Martin
-
Up until last year there was a pole in the middle of the lake for tethered hydros, I am sure someone will have a picture of it. That is what the lake was built for. It was removed as tethered hydros are not run anymore there, it also made for a clearer lake area. I would contact someone at the Wicksteed Model Boat Club if you want to know when they had tethered hydros running in the lake.
Brian
-
I will do, thanks, Brian. I used to have a Facebook page all about the disgrace of lost waters, especially hydro ponds, in this benighted land, but typically it garnered no interest. That's why third world countries still have world championships in tethered models and we have nothing worth a toss and NO tethered car tracks. I'm surprised that a tethered fan like me has not heard or read of any meetings at Wicksteed.
Thanks for the info,
Martin

I just did a Google search 'Wicksteed tethered'.

Very interesting articles and just shows...you can be an avid reader of the mags. and still never hear of certain people and clubs. Such a shame that they took the pole out.

Thanks, tiger, I was just wondering which particular boats, hulls they were. Especially the one with a LOT of strings on deck for what looks like a fairly standard Bermudian rig.

Well hi team

Still Steamboat apprentice and I will be there, (not arriving until eary Friday eve though)
Ready for a wekend of fun.....and probally some abuse........
Chill the beer...... :-)) :-))
-
The wanderer returns. This means that we are getting out of the EU! The French have decided to deport Phil and his dentures!!!!

Does that mean that Phil will become an
inundentured apprentice?

just seemed a little "bitchy" to me, as every one to their own thing.
midnight garden refers to a very young children's programme, [ my grand kids love it] where every thing is coloured in gaily [using the term in the old fashioned terminology] and bright colours to capture their imagination. I used to enjoy watching it sometimes myself even as an old duffer that I am.

No, I don't think, so if it is openly criticising something that someone is obviously very proud of.
There is too much opening of mouth before putting brain into gear and not perceiving the impact on others these days everywhere you turn, and even light digs at someone's pride and joy might upset a person for no reason other than such a comment..

Hi everyone
Mass rumours of me missing in action, disappeared and or planning to take over the world are wildly inaccurate! %)
I'm still alive and kicking, and I've been sorting things out at my end for this weekend.
I do have to ask the following:
If you can fit a table in your vehicle I'm asking if you can please do so.
This year there will be not so many available due to two large weddings over the same weekend who will be using the same tables as we do. Once the park have finished dressing the function rooms we will find out how many extra tables we will receive on top of the 10 to 15 we've been promised.
Other than that, the van has been loaded with the gazebos, tables, cups, signs and very importantly the BBQ!

Hmmmmm. someone wear a nice suit, see if they can sneak in and get some cake for us all..... O0

Hi everyone ....... unfortunately I can't make it to Wicksteed this year. Hope you all have a brilliant couple of days.
Looking to the future ..... November and the International Model Boat Show ..... maybe you can all spread the word that once again this year there is the opportunity for TEN non-club entries to exhibit. The selection we had last year was excellent and we are on the look out for ten new exhibitors. So if you don't belong to a Club or maybe your Club doesn't display at the show then this is your chance to join in. Just send me a personal mail via this Forum or call Meridienne Exhibitions on 01926 614101 and ask for Jayne Mansell.
Also ...... as this year is the 300th anniversary of James Brindley, the famous canal builder, the show is working in conjunction with Canal & River Trust (CRT) to mount a display in celebration. As part of this we plan to have a mass sailing of model narrowboats each day. So again, spread the word among all your Clubs. It would be useful to have an indication of who's likely to take part therefore a PM via the Forum would be very helpful.
Once again have a great Wicky Weekend.

2nd Day of Mayhem at Wicksteed, today, Sunday!
Yesterday's weather was probably one of the best days ever, warm and sunny but not too hot, absolutely lovely!
Weatherman says more of the same today.
It's an open sail; weekend, all welcome.
Come sail, come chat, come meet old an new friends, free tea & coffee! :-))

News Flash News Flash. .........
Spot report from Mayhem
No rain. For the first time in many years we have had no rain or high winds! Martin has spent the afternoon sunning himself. BETTER WINDS TODAY THAN YESTER DAY FOR THE SAIL ENTHUSIASTS.
No complaints this year
-
Huge THANKS must go to Martin..Ruth and Gina for the tea and coffe and delicious bacon rolls.
Special thanks to the Wicksteed boys who have done the signage and setting up of the lake.....
WELL DONE TO YOU ALL
Special mention to our bretheren Scottish friend for the special COLD TEA !!!!!!!!!
So nice to meet old frends again.
See you all next year
Dave and the girls
-
Well now that was a really fun weekend! It was good to meet some of my fellow Mayhemists, especially Klunk, who looked very dapper in his three piece-onepiece Wunzie. I caught a bit of the sun on Saturday it was so balmy. I am very glad to hear that I didn't take the weather away with me this morning as it was a lovely drive home to Somerset with absolutley no hold ups anywhere. Even the Oxford area of the A34 was clear and quite fast moving.
I think that Ruth and Gina did sterling work keeping us folk in tea and biccies :-)) I am very impressed with the lake and the club what with your sizable number of younger members and friendly outlook. Keep up the good work and I hope to see you all next year!
-
I would like to say a big thank you to Ron Dean . he has supported this show year in year out . He is the only trader I know who has done it from the being .
John
-
I think we cleared him out of monitors! I know both of his M33s went and possibly both his M15s as well:O)
Do you think the Park railway would lend the club their train for the night so Ron could sleep in a carriage next to his stand next year?
-
Huge thank you to Martin, lovely show, you must of charmed the rain gods this year. Attached are the three photos I got before my phone went flat!
Thanks to Ron for the M33 something else to build.
-
Right I'm home.
First off a big thank you to Wicksteed MBC for hosting the event and for their constant commitment to this event every year. I try to speak to as many as possible! !
Thanks to Ron Dean, who always supports this event through hail wind and rain.....and now sunshine.
To Martin Ruth and Gina for all the tea coffee and bacon rolls.....plus the ever present smiles on their faces.
To the Scottish Contingent. .....always been and always will be a pleasure to be in your company.
To all who attend........the event is for you, without you it would not be worth it.
A special thanks to Bob K. I know your were upset about 2 shows on the same weekend, but always a pleasure to see you.
To Steph and Phil. ..... no matter what time you turn up, help is always available
To all who camped.........what happens at Wicksteed stays at Wicksteed. .......including the worst burgler in the world!
To Nick and Rob, for letting me rope them into the zip line.
And finally, I hope I made a few people laugh with the tuxedo onesie, and a big shout to Nick, that's for the helmet and goggles to make me look like a real Klunk.
To the glass bottle from Scotland, I salute you.
To Nick's ribena, yum
To the bbq evening crowd, I hope you enjoyed everything, and next year we will a speciality to cook on there.
Good speed to those who have yet to leave or are still travelling.
-
Many thanks to everyone, good friends and warm camaraderie. Nothing 'vertical' meteorologically, in fact it turned out warm and sunny. Always a pleasure to drool over model making expertise that I can hope one day to acquire - but this is how you learn, by chatting with those who have solved the problems and come up trumps.
Cheers Bob K
-
Huge thanks to Martin, Ruth for the amazing coffee upon arrival and the Wicksteed team YET again for the awesome weekend even if i only tagged along today. Big ball of light showed no signed of letting up and the wind kept its calm, could this be the start of things to come for future events if so i will get my Bermuda shorts out to match Martin's shirt :o
Slight technical issues with the Mersey on the lake today but now I'm home and investigated it could of been dealt with lakeside. %)
Many thanks to the Scottish Contingent for the rescue of my stand foam well executed maneuver's indeed :-))
I shall await the slightly embarrassing pictures of both myself and Shipmate60 (Bob) taking the 'River Monster' for a walk {-) {-)
Nice to see Stavros and the mini wombles, Phil and apprentice, Klunk, Bob K and the few others i got to chat with today was a great afternoon, I will be back again next year indeed.
Jay
-
May I add my thanks and that of the Peterborough club for a lovely weekend especially the weather. I understand Martin now has to throw himself into a volcano as his part of the deal. %%
Just one point, could someone toilet train the geese for next year please. SWMBO was not pleased when I walked in on Saturday evening all over a nice clean carpet. I still have the scars. <:(
A good time all round, thanks again to all those who had a hand in pulling it all together. See you all next year.
-
Just again reiterate Klunk' and Stavros' sentiments;
Huge thanks to the Wicksteed club, who's continuing support and enthusiasm is greatly appreciated. :-))
Special mentions in dispatches: Nick, Steve & Nigel.
( Thanks for stopping by Paul, good to see you. )
Steff and Phil for, a, financial support, b, technical support, c, furthest distance traveled, d, the invaluable Tea Urn!
Mrs & Little Miss Mayhem.
Ronaldo Dean, & by inference Dorne!
Carl & 'Flojo"' (Linkspan Models)
The Scottish Contingent, with the longest journey to Wicksteed.... and home again.
( what happens at Wicksteed stays at Wicksteed! ) O0
The other camping crew..... bunch of nutters!
The clubs that came and set up station.
Japanese Tony, with whole fleet of foreign battle wagons.
The wives that came and put up with their husband and the rest of us!
Bob K. triumphant in the face of success.... but he did have mesmerizing 'Iggle Piggle' in the Night Garden boat!
JayDee and his beautiful J-class.
Bob, Jay and..... for coming all the way up from the South coast.
Everyone else I'm too tired to remember and thank...
... and to ALL the model boats, wives, family, friends and public visitors:
“I like to thank you for watching me and my little show here tonight.
If you've enjoyed it then it's all been worthwhile.
So until we meet again, goodnight, and I love you all! ”
Oh and Klunk was there too! :P :-))
( ..... from inside the volcano ! )

WHAT A WEEKEND!!!!!!!!!!! %% %% %%
So many to thank - not enough room!!! EVERYONE!!! All who were there and either A) made it happen or B) made the weekend what it was by just being there and enjoying themselves.
Our first time - but by no means the last (sorry Klunk - you don't get rid of us that easy!!) - what friendliness, what camaraderie.....
Folks - if you haven't been.........you REALLY ARE missing out.. O0
Now to recover......................................
Carl n Flo :-))
-
Anne and I had a really great day - and our son John turned up too! :-)
We would like to add our thanks to Martin, Ruth, Gina, Klunk, Wicksteed MBC and everyone else who helped to make the weekend so enjoyable. It was good to meet up with Phil and Steph - not forgetting Stavros and many other aquaintances, old and new. Once again a host of impressive models on display and in the water.
Roll on next year!
Anne & Mike

Well I've just about recovered (Steve has just about too!) with the van unloaded and everything put back in place in the shed and charged the batteries for the next outing.
I would like to thank everyone for a brilliant weekend- I don't think I've had so much fun for a long time.
Once again a massive thanks to Martin, Ruth and Gina for their stirling work keeping the coffee, tea and bacon sandwiches going.
Thanks to the worst burgler in the world- Klunk! Hope you enjoy the proper 'Klunk' outfit! I can't believe you persuaded me and Rob to go on the zip-wire and I've certainly learnt several different ways of cooking chicken over the two years I've camped with the Mayhemers!
Many thanks to Phil and Steph for bringing the all important tea urn and speaker system, and good to see you both in good spirit (both ways if you get what I mean!) and hopefully see you both at Warwick this year.
I would like to particularly thank Ron Dean of Dean's Marine for supporting the show for a tenth year, and to Carl and Flo of Linkspan Models who have joined us for the first time and showing off their first model kit.
Fantastic to meet for the first time Ballastankian, glad you enjoyed the show and hope to see again.
Many thanks to Geoff, Tony H, Japanese Tony, Andy (Geoff's mate), Victorian and Bobk for providing the pre-WW1 and WW1 display of warships that looked spectacular together on the water.
And finally a big thanks to all the clubs, individual exhibitors, and visitors who came this weekend, there are so many to thank and hope to see you all at other show this year and obviously Mayhem at Wicksteed 2017!
Now where is my camera to start downloading pictures... :-))
-
Well said Nick!
And thanks for everything again. :-))

Well what can I say, the sun certainly shone on the righteous (well Mayhemer’s) this weekend. The apprentice and I had a fantastic weekend, as has been said too many names to mention, but our thanks go to our glorious leader Martin, who was beautifully controlled by Ruth and Gina (who Steph and I would like to say a big thank you for all the tea and of course the bacon butties).
We didn’t arrive until very late on the Friday after a horrible journey, but thanks to Klunk and the formation tent erecting team we were enjoying a well-earned drink by 10 50pm, it did go a bit downhill from there though. O0
It was great to meet up with old friends and make some new ones, Terry, thanks for letting me try my hand a sailing (and putting the fear of god into me….it’s not easy is it) Carl….I’ll be in touch (about you know what) and of course Big Bri, Davey and Ron for not only the douvet but the teeth (you had to be there) not to mention the hurty head in the morning. Mr Milbourn who arrived to find me surrounded by wires muttering dark things about electronics, has now advised me to ring him before plugging anything together to save him the time of repairing the ESC (again) :embarrassed: Maybe I should stick to steam.
Of course I must not forget Steamboat Apprentice for putting up with life in a very small tent, who had it not been for the Slo Gin (cheers Nick & Steve) and the brandy (cheers boys from the north) she would have found a hotel. Next year all planned chaps, this very day we have been out a bought a huge tent..
See you all next year if not before
-
Many thanks to all for a Mayhemday that I'll remember for the simple reason that I didn't sink, ram anything and sailed at roughtly the right speed. I'll obviously have to try harder next year :embarrassed:

Well that's the Scottish contingent arrived home safe and well. We would just like to thank Martin, Ruth and Gina for all the hard work they do over the weekend, the irrepressible Pete (Klunk) for seemingly being everywhere at the same time, the effervescent Phil and his lovely apprentice, all the Luton lads, Nick and all Wicksteed crew for all their hard work, Stav, Kelly and their two beautiful daughters and not forgetting Gran, what a lovely family, to Carl and Flo, it was an absolute pleasure to meet you both and to mister Ron Dean for his undying support year after year.
To all who made us once again, feel so very welcome? We thank you ALL from the bottom of our hearts, we`re so looking forward to next years event.
Ps.... The sight of the man in a three piece onesy, wearing a pilot helmet and goggles, doing his best cat burglar impression, in broad daylight and in front of everyone , was a sight I`ll never forget, I nearly wet myself with laughter {-)
-
I must admit she does look superb on the water even when the gremlins got into the electrics and shes sat idle.
Still plenty to do and not upto your standard Dave but im happy with her so far Stu did a nice job building it so he has to take credit for doing the hard work :-))

Any port in a storm! We had heard that rough weather was the norm at Wicksteed, so we tried the dock for size should the need arise:

No 'shelf queens' at Wicksteed!

hi all
Many thank for the kind words from many, it is always a pleasure to be at Mayhem weekend, keeps me fit as well now ? all unloaded and put way now, on the wet Tuesday.
Many thanks to all who attended, it was a great weekend, and as others have said before, its a great atmosphere, and what a super bunch of modellers you meet, its is as model boating should be, great cameradie, and helping each other, plus a bit crazy helps.
Again thanks to all, look forward to next year, this time I will stay overnight somehow and join the festivities, I do miss them.
Some picture s of models from our range seen at the weekend.
Happy boating
Regards

In reply #558 above. There is something that looks like a wooden batwing with jet propulsion.
Does anyone know anything more about it, or know any youtube links?
-
Yep it's a pulse jet attached incorrectly to a round the pole part built hull.
Its I correctly attached due to there not being enough thermal insulation between the hull and metal attachment.if this run I think it might burn through the upright wood and take off on its own accord!
-
Tiger try www.onthewire.co.uk home of tethered racing hydros in UK but I think pulse jets may be banned, very noisy and for experts only I`d think. Delta R/C model aircraft do over 200/250 mph with one fitted :o
-
Just to add my thanks to the Wicksteed park club for another excellent event - one of the best I think this year. At one point on Saturday there must have been 20 boats out at the same time, and a huge variety - from the Victorian warships to some superb sailing boats.
Thank you Martin for more great photos!
Really good to catch up with everyone & meet some new boaters, looking forward to the next one!

The only thing on earth as loud and as uncontrollable as a pulse jet is the Republican presidential nominee...... O0 Once you've heard one you never forget it! :o

It produces roughly the same amount of hot gas as well!!!!
There is a mad bloke on Youtube called Colin Furze that does a lot with Pulse jets. His 'Jettle' is quite amusing.
