Title: Earnslaw
Post by: GG on April 29, 2015, 08:21:32 pm
Felt the need for something a little different, for me at least, and someone suggested I look at the New Zealand steamer "Earnslaw".  It was too attractive not to build but the final design ended up more freelance than scale, hence the change in name!
Using an approximate scale of 1:72 produced a model some 28 inches (71 cm) in length with a displacement of 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg).  Power was going to be a single 385 motor driving twin screws via a pulley/belt system.  However, by dint of playing with the transmitters built in mixing options I obtained conventional rudder/throttle control with the option of using independent twin motor steering whenever it was needed.
It is a pleasure to sail, the only problem is my accidental knocking overboard of the passenger figures!
Plans just dispatched to Model Boats.

Passenger figures are replaceable but the boat looks lovely, I would appreciate some information on the build. She looks a treat.

There is a beautiful 1/24th Earnslaw in Sydney built by the late Mike Coppin.. I'll see if I can find any photos of her.

Very nice approximation, GG.
You have captured the look and spirit nicely.
Well done.

Chris G - Just the usual "balsa box" with a few strategic curves to make it look ship-shape and some corners rounded off.  Full construction details will be in the magazine article assuming it is accepted.
Hopeitfloats - The website you mention was one of the sources I used. Without it the model would probably have not been started.
