Hi guys, we are going to have a go at tug towing for a club event and if any of you Tuggers out
There could help with a steering course layout for beginners it would be very much appreciated.

So there is not much time to get things sorted hence the request for help in sorting a
Steering course out and any rules that are applicable.

I've got a copy of our towing rules which I can send to you, but it appears to be too big to attach on here, if you pm me your e-mail address I'll send it to you.
As to courses, it is a little more complicated as at Balne Moor we have fixed items (harbours islands etc.) in the pond which form the basis of our courses. I'll try to find a copy of a recent course, but it will be based on those fixtures in the pond.
Also it would be helpful to know what size of tow you intend to use.

Hi, I am the comp sec of HEMBC in Lincoln. We have been tug towing for a few years now. All our objects /course have to be put out and retrieved on the day. Our basic rules are; all objects are 'live' ( as in if you touch them you are penalised), both the tug and tow are 'live' ( any part of either touches anything, you are penalised), every tug must be over 21" long, every competitor must use the fixed towing harness (supplied affixed to the tow), the amount of length of harness used is at the competitors discretion. All objects to be navigated through are no closer than 1 metre. The tug and tow must start and finish at a dead stop aligned to a marked harbour wall. 2 points are awarded for each touch, 3 points if it is a scrape ( a touch that scrapes longer than circa 10 cm),10 points for a missed course ( where the competitor completes a section to their satisfaction but the judge sees that they have not followed the course correctly). We find that a simple but close course provides the most challenge and entertainment! These are the rules for single and two man towing. If you have a larger tow for two man towing, then a section where the whole unit must be reversed, and a section where the whole unit is turned 180°, and a section where the whole unit must be centrally docked, is a must. Overall, there is no mystery, just have a go and learn. A help for me in designing the courses is that I have made a scale tug and tow, and a two man tugs and tow that I guide around 1cm gridded paper, this gives me a rough guide as I draw out my planned course on this paper, if it will work in reality.

Just found one of this old course from when I visited. Hope you do not mind me posting it.The green bits I think were perminant so was the oil rig.

Could you post a rough distance from your dock to the oil rig to give Gazou an idea if distance and width between buoys.

Great stuff. As a huge Tug fan who lives a good distance from a club with Towing Competitions is there anyone else out there with Towing Course "maps" they'd be willing to share that might help create some new courses and objects for when we visit other lakes or use them on our own temporarily.

I will be there tomorrow and will take some measurements which I will post.

Hope there is no copyright on this one.
One of the illustrious gentlemen who run the event may be able to give rough measurements. But it looks a big course for beginners.

Bouys at the moment, but there is more on the way.

That course looks like it's for scale steering not tug towing /ship handling. looking at the paper work it's timed as well.

I find strange the idea to time a tug boat pulling a trailer.
It is important to spend the buoys of the good side.
It is important not to touch buoys
The speed is not important

Speed or time is usually kept as our "tie breaker".
That way if two teams get the same score, the best time wins.
Our first courses were, and some still are very simple.
1. Leave the dock
2. Go between two buoy, or through a harbor gate.
3, Round a marker
4. Back through the two buoy, or harbor gate
5. Dock the ship.
You would be surprised at how easy that is to mess up.

Would that be a single man tow or two man or a pushing course?

That would be for a two boat tow.
For a single boat tow, I think the simplest one we had was to take the tanker barge from
one dock, through a gate, land at a second dock where the tank would be filled, and then
return to the first dock. (The water pressure from the fill spout messed everyone up.)
We positioned the pilings to align the barge and water spout, but almost no one
noticed the potential till after they had finished the challenge.

Gazou,
The Balne Moor pond is approximately 25m x 40m.
The towing course are generally the full width of the pond and about 30m of its length.

Hi guys&galls, once again I would like to thank everyone who's contributed to this post.
The towing event was brilliant, had a good laugh, I was supprized how many passers-by
Stopped and witnessed the event, it will be a welcome addition to the club events calendar.
