Title: Type IX Submarine RC conversion
Post by: MikeP on May 12, 2015, 07:39:29 pm
Hi,   I am a newbie to the forum.   Was wondering if anybody has done a conversion on the Revell 1/72 type IX.   Recently bought one and just started.   Want it to be a static dive, so WTC will have a centre section sealed and hoping to pump in water so air compressed and use solenoid valve to release and pump to remove rest.   Waiting at moment for some acrylic rod to arrive so that can make endcaps for WTC.   Problem I have at the moment is to find some small (3mm i.d.) seal for the motor outputs through the end cap.   Anybody with suggestions where might find some?

Hello Mike and welcome to mayhem..  it's your round with the drinks.   {-)

We would be interested in seeing your build so if you have any pictures, you are welcome to post them. I cannot help you much in the submarine department but I'm sure there are others that will.   :-))

Cheers

Some builders use bellows. You can also use silicone tubing over a brass sleeve. Both economic and effective methods of sealing shafts of all diameters.

If you want o-ring glanded type seals, Norbert Bruggen supplies some nice items which will do the job, and they're not too expensive.

Hi Mateys,    Thanks for welcome and input.   Pity there is no supplier in UK for sub parts, either USA,Asia or Europe.   Would have attached photo of tug I am finishing but my photo files are too big so won't accept, will probably be the same with any photos I take of build.
      Anyway, cheers

Most model submarine sellers here in the UK sell complete systems rather than components.

Craycraft used to sell components for those building their own dive modules, but Brian Cornelius packed in years ago.

Ordering from overseas is not a big deal if you have a Paypal account.

Oh, and BTW, Dave Merriman emailed me with some links showing his conversion. Which you may find helpful.

Thanks for links Subculture,  Quite expensive to buy from there, especially with VAT on top.   Trying to do mine without taking out a loan!!   Would post some pictures but files restricted to 300 size, so not able to.   cheers for info

Or just compress the photos and/or reduce the resolution.

I use photofiltre 7, a free program which is great for working with photos and images.

Well, here we are again.  Had problems trying to seal WTC, cure one leak another pops up.  So decided to revert to water bag.   Nearly finished drive and servo unit. Made up pump switch unit, got most of main wiring done.  Have attached pics.

Hi Sub,    Got pump through ebay from PMB BOATS,  It is a geared pump 6-12v and reversible.   Due to being geared that is why fitted cut off valve on top to stop pressure leaking back.  Seems to work fine under test.    Same as Robbe type, cost abot £17.00 with postage, so not too bad.
     regards Mike
