Title: 1/48 Hunt Class MCMV HMS Quorn Build log
Post by: T888 on May 31, 2015, 09:44:27 pm
Hi guys
I did say after building HMS Clyde I would try to do a build log of my next project.

So he we go, I've desided to keep with the 1/48 scale as I now have a comprehensive collection of moulds of 1/48 fittings.

I ordered the Fleet scale hull of there Hunt Class MCMV back in March this year, the hull as usual is first class.

I build all my running gear , apart from the props, so I set out to make a set of shafts and rudders and complete the wiring layout.
Currently tHe hull is painted white inside after , making and installing the stand holding pins, installing the bow thruster , rudder post, shafts and A frames.

Hi Dave,  Talk about great minds think alike, after completing Coventry I was thinking about my next build, I came up with a short list of two,  an Archer class or HMS Brocklesby  in 1:48 after seeing her moored over the dockyard, that looks like a nice hull, I'll be following your build,  still trying to make my mind up but as the hull and plans are readily available for the hunt class I'm tending to think Brocklesby.  :-))

Hi Joe,

For me it was the next inline of 1/48 scale models I've done and it will complement my HMS Penzance. However the build will be slower than you Type 42, so hope I can keep the interest in the build log.

Part of the decision for the Hunt Class was getting on board Middleton at the festival of Christmas last November. I must say the crew was very helpful and let me take as mainly pictures as I required.

Just started the wiring, still not got it set in my mind  {:-{  as to what I will have working , other than bow thruster ect,

Was thinking of lights (LEDs & Fibre optics) I used fibre optic before, for the bulk head lights , had good results with this in the past.

Sound system, Gun mount, radar, large cable drum on the quart deck and try this time to detail the bridge with consol lit up as well. But this is the wish list , what the final is ,  %) God only knows.

Have you gone for the red and green wiring to represent port and starboard? If so this is very attractive.

Post by: T888 on June 02, 2015, 08:23:06 pm
No, it's just that I got feed up with black for neg, so use green for a change. All wires will have there own tag ID Applied later. Once I've completed the wiring lay out you see why I keep to the same  wiring scheme for all my models.

One of the modern Hunts is on my to do list once I get my skills up to the required levels. I have looked after or worked on them all so would have to go OTT on getting everything right. Currently working on the Ledbury and her major refit.

If and when wifey decides on our next house (been talking of moving for 5 years!) I will have space for a bigger fleet and a Hunt class is a must.
No trawling to Internet or looking at scale plans, I can walk out the workshop and straight onto whichever one is along side and have a look at whatever bit I am building. Soooooooo much easier!

Post by: radiojoe on June 05, 2015, 10:14:41 am
Hi Dave, I've made my mind up it's going to be HMS Brocklesby for my next build, I remember when the hunt class were introduced, I was working for Camper & Nicholson's, on GRP yachts and thought a GRP warship, that will never catch on, 13 built and 8 still in active service with the royal navy, how wrong was I.
Just one question Dave do the actual ships have a bow thruster or is this something you like to fit, and what size thruster are you fitting, , ok that's two questions %%.  :o

Hi Joe, the Hunts were refitted with a bow thruster.

In October 2010, BAE Systems signed a £15m contract to replace the 30-year-old propulsion systems onboard eight Royal Navy Hunt Class vessels. All vessels will be fitted with new engines, gearboxes, bow thrusters, propellers and machinery control systems by 2016 as part of the contract

The Hunt's bow thruster has two holes, one for suction and one for discharge.

Am I missing something here .?
Title: Re: 1/48 Hunt Class MCMV HMS Quorn Build log
Post by: Z750Jay on June 05, 2015, 11:13:38 am
I don't think you can get a bow thruster like the hunts have. Basically if I remember there is 1 pump and a massive valve that directs suction/discharge to the side needed.
I would have a look but the compartment is OOB due to fibreglassing at the moment.

Pretty much I think. Unfortunately the last Sandown I was recently on was one of the Saudi ones but I did not notice. Concentrating on how hot it was and fixing the internal comm's issues

I see they were/are powered by Deltic diesels. One for the locomotive buffs here. Are they going for conventional diesels or a set of miniature gas turbines? I suppose the former is more suitable for slow manouvring needed by Mine sweepers.

I think they are getting CAT engines. I know there is an awful lot more space in the engine room. Currently the Ledbury's is completely gutted. Kind of wierd down there compared to what it is like normally.
Title: Re: 1/48 Hunt Class MCMV HMS Quorn Build log
Post by: ballastanksian on June 05, 2015, 05:29:40 pm
I had a look at the engines online and did not realise how complex they are! They must have been fun to do major work on in the engine room confines.

Cast off the 30mm gun kit from the masters for Clyde & Penzance last night. Also made the doors, satcom and the rudders.

Not too happy with the doors, so may remake them later.

The gun looks brilliant! It is impressive how the 30mm cannon (itself not a small gun) is dwarfed by all the gubbins around it on the mounting.

Keep up the good work:O)

Hi ,
Progress is slow due to recovering from a opp on my arm.
What I have done to date is rubbed the hull down with a fine wet & dry grit paper, then sprayed it with a filler primer which is then cut back. once I'm happy with the finish the hull is sprayed with a red primer. Again this is cut back using a fine grade paper, then the under water line is marked and the area above masked off so the lower half can be sprayed with a satin vanish.

I wish you a full and speedy recovery from your Op. The sanding should give you some essential physio on your arm muscles.

Post by: T888 on July 17, 2015, 08:10:34 pm
Thanks, recovery well under way , it's been hard sanding using only one arm and not being able to do modelling , even when I've been to the SWA shows , had to rely on others to lift my models . hopefully will be able to get back to work next week. Also get some modelling done.

Your cracking on with her Dave, I do like the 30 mm. I've only made the cradle for mine, but I did intend it to be a winter build, looking good mate, see you Sunday.  :-))

Thanks Joe,
The 30 mm is one of my owner moulding kits.

It will be along time before she gets her feet wet, I've still have a lot of the electronics to install. I also plan to have the bridge fully detailed, with a removable roof , so when she at SWA shows the public can see it.

Sound like your winter project is already under way !

Its done by using yellow solar film, which I cut the circle out using a compass cutter, then the black is painted on.

My pleasure sir. (Bows and wiggles hat theatrically:O)

Serously though, those sort of markings horrify me. I can just paint stars on US military models but multi coloured rings that are rouns and symetrical, that is an achievement.

Some picture of the bridge.

My plan is to fully detail the bridge , with lights, consoles back lighted by fibre optic.

And before the question is asked, the "D" plug in front of the bridge is so the superstructure can be disconnected from the main hull wiring ( Female connector is still to be fitted).

The second picture is of the generator housing just I front of the main mast.

Hi All,
This is a picture of the controll box which has the receiver and bothe speed controllers , All the power connection are plugged in at the bow end and All the radio is at the stern. The idea of this is so can use this control box for All my models, as it can be remove in seconds , by unplugging the power and two radio plugs.
Also this mean I wire All my models the same way ,  even if it's only using one motore and a couple of the channel available .

Hi Dave looking impressive as usual, what battery are you using in yours, I'm using a 12volt 7amh sla. I had spare, I'll use a diode to drop the voltage for the bow thruster, glad you got the photo thing sorted.  :-))

Hi Joe,

The same with your build, looking good.

I'm using 6 volt 10amh, thruster on micro switches, but I may be changing the current thruster out, as I believe the Hunts have the same thruster configuration as the Batch 2 Sandown's.

The bow thruster on micro switches ? That's something I never thought of, I was going to run mine on it's own ESC. But I suppose you only need to pulse the thruster to achieve the movement, I may rethink this, cheers Dave.  :-))

T888, on an iPad I just email a pic to myself. When you press send it asks you to choose the size of the pic. Just choose the closest value below 300mb. When you receive the resized pic hold your finger on it and it will give you the option to save the image. Save it and use that pic to post on here. No apps required. Takes far longer to tell than to do.

Jerry,

Joe,
AS went well, Friday was a bit slow but Sat/Sun was flat out. I was not noting show any models, as I had commitments that kept me away Sunday.

Your build is moving at a great rate of knots.

I also should have said , the Radar drive motor forms apart of the main radar support post, this has a planetary gear box, which is the black section of the radar post. This type of arrangement gives 6 rpm.

Are your labels stickers or decals? I suppose that as the plates would have some thickness in real life, a sticker would not be such a problem as opposed to painted stencils which even 1:1 would be very thin.

They look top class lockers!
Title: Re: 1/48 Hunt Class MCMV HMS Quorn Build log

Unfortunately the warning labels are BECC . I've tried using water transfer paper to printed the labels but could not get a fine enough print result, so used BECC,s with a coat of satin varnish to finish off. This loses some of the thickness of the labels.

Hi Gents, update, I've  been working on the cable winch in front of the mail cable drum. I was lucky to be invited on board one of the Hunts in Portsmouth two weeks ago. During the visit I,d taken serval photos, which helped in getting the winch correct.
The winch is made up of over 200 parts and has taken 70 hrs so far, work I need to complete is the motor ,cable drum brakes and the roller.

Hi E,Well he I go, this is just my way of doing cold casting and this posting does not give all the tricks of the trade or is a detailed method,  but hope it helps ?First , the silicon rubber or RTV .... I use is "Shore 24 " and the casting resin is "Fast Cast"Both which I order from CFS in Cornwall. There are others RTV & Resins on the market, but I have found over the years this to be the best for me.When you first start its best to start with a simple master, i.e door, lockers etc.  As I've said before in my build log, when making a masters , make the best you can,  as any mistakes will be repeated on each casting taken. When making the master, I always think about how I get the casting out of the mould In one peace. The shore 24 RTV is flexible and allows me to get some quite complicated masters out , however You could make a split mould. The mould box Method I use is to use draws from an old tidy all, but I do make boxes from 20 thou plasticard. Some others used Lego bricks with go effect. Note always a fix the master to the base of the moulding box , as some fittings can and will float to the top when being moulded if there not fixed down. When I make a master I usually use plasticard , brass or automotive body filler as seen in the picture 1. of the sat dome. Some complicated items like the 30mm Gun mount . I build in a kit form and then moulded each component separately , see picture 2. As I said before , the additional detailing is based on lots of actual photos of the Gun.I do use the model drawings for the general measurements, but the detailing is based on photos of the actual component being replicated. Now a days you can buy plastic, Alli and brass hexagonal , angle, half round etc sections in differing sizes, these section I use to add detailing the fittings or making item like intake vents and doors as in picture 3,4 also see crane base earlier in this posting.Hexagonal section cut down to represent nut/bolts as seen in this picture 5 . Picture 6 is one of the lift raft units.

Hi Dave,

Sorry for belated reply as was away on holiday but thanks so much for the additional explanations and photographs. I believe I can speak on behalf of the entire forum that your craftsmanship is second to none and the finish of your castings is very crisp indeed.
Must give this a try myself and will have a go, good of you to list those products so can do an attempt.

Keep us posted on further progress, am following your Hunt with a keen interest and she is a beauty in being.

Thanks again,
E

HMS Quorn's build has been going slow due to my SWA commitments , however this week end we had a show in Portmouth docks . The SWA had an area where we were doing demo's on building models, so I had time to build the fuel can rack, one of the life ring racks and started on the crane jibs. The jibs & fuel can I will take casting from , as this helps me to stretch my moulding skills.

Yes Ian, The model building did go down well. With a lot of interest in the moulding and the use of plasticard.
We located in Boat house 4 where the Portmouth historical people were demoing the traditional wooden boat building skills. We had over 1300 visitors through the door on Saturday, but Sunday was a bit less.

Gents, been a frustrating couple of weeks, after posting photos of the crane, I got hold of some actual crane photos, which showed some errors in what I'd built, so the crane went in the bin.

So then I turned to making the velocity sound winch which is fitted on the main deck starboard side just in front of the mini gun platform supports.

Thanks Ray,
Now I've got back to it , Its starting to dawn on me how much there is still to do. I've one or two major item to build, One being the sonar cable winch. But until I can get some picture of this winch, it will have to wait.

The other item is the large crane on the stern, but recent photos of HMS Quorn shows this has been removed. So again until I have proof this had been permanently removed or replaced I'll wait before making and fitting one.

Bow thruster work well and she answer well the the helm
Smoke generator was set up to work on a latching micro switch which was operated by over trimming the rudder servo. No issues

T-tripple8 ..........your build looks absolutely  :-))....,but just a minor point....... is that a de-compression or re-compression pressure vessel?....may not sound important...but to a diver with actual bubbles of entrained oxygen in his blood >>:-(.... would probably prefer one over the other mentioned vessels

"A recompression chamber is a hyperbaric treatment chamber used to treat divers suffering from certain diving disorders such as decompression sickness"

De-compressing the atmosphere the diver is subjected to would simply kill that person......... your call O0

[PS...I am a little surprised that some of your fellow Countrymen with their vast and attested nautical knowledge and experience did not flag this to you]

Heard it called both on MCMV's Derek.
A diver coming up too fast would be recompressed to his original
working depth pressure and slowly decompressed to surface pressure.

Evening Ned.....whilst not associated with above water weapons systems, in my time with our DofD I did have  a little training with Hale Hamilton pressure reducing valves......these were UK produced from WW1 to current day I believe

In the applications I mention were installed exclusively for 'recompression hyperbaric equipment'

Lets not mince words ....words can be incorrectly used/stated....or just totally mis-understood O0

Secondly, I do not wish to get into a war of words. <*<

Ned is correct in what he said, both references is used in the U.K. To discribe the dive chamber

However .......Decompression is the illness, Recompression is the treatment. Based on this extract from the London Diving Chamber.

The London Diving Chamber specialises in Diving Medicine and provides a 24 hour clinic with everything a diver could need from a medical facility.

Guys.......as offered ...the build of the MCMV HMS Quorn is absolutely 1st Class.... :-))

However despite technical mis or miss understood quotations by anybody's DINGBAT proof reader.....

A recompression chamber saves lives.........don't be fooled by fools.......put a diver with the bends/bendz in a chamber & decompress or lower the pressure within the chamber & you will have blood on your hands

Simple....... Derek

After looking at my library of Hunt photos. I Notice the Sonar dish, which is stored on the bridge front, was different to the drawings. The actual dish is not a dome shape as shown on the drawing ,but more like the dome has had its side squared off.(see attached photo)

So I decided the best way to make it was to cut the round base from 2 mm plastic card, then cut the cross section shape from 10 thou card. This was then attached to the base and filed using P38 filler, then i sanded it to the correct shape.

There is nothing better than photos for reference. Sounds bleeding obvious I know, but I remember ages back when books had poorer photos, the plans were often better to work from, but these days with better books and the internet you are spoilt for detail to work from.

Have you found that if you take reference photos yourself, you always wish you had one from another angle because you cannot make out a detail on something?

Like in Radiojoe thread, I also thought about access to the power switch and how I was going to connect and disconnect  the lights , radar etc. But also be able to hide these.

This is my method I came up with , it reduced the amount of times I have to lift off the superstructure.

On some of my other models , were I had more space or large lockers I could also added charging points.

Another neat solution to the problem - good work Dave - with the lockers in place the connection / switch is totally hidden and most likely to be unaffected by the odd goffer. :-)

She looks almost real in that natural light. The odd stain on the deck (possibly distorted light through window glass) adds to this  :-))

Thanks Ian,

I did not notice the stain, I'll need to clean it off as I have a show at HMS Collingwood tomorrow , so she needs to be prefect to pass inspection by RN personal.

I really feel as if I'm back aboard a hunter when I look at your pictures. I was the MHDO (Mine Hunting Directing Officer) in Kedelston in 83 and 1st OOW in Middleton in 86. Memories fade as the years pass but I think that they used a similar Sonar arrangement. My comment is that the Sonar dome cover would only be stowed on the front of the accommodation when actually hunting as the dome would be inflated with sea water when searching. Speed of the ship was limited when hunting and could only use full speed when transducer was retracted into the hull and the cover fitted in place. They may have carried two covers, I can't really remember. Can somebody put me right on this?
Jerry.
