A new addition
I am a happy bunny with a new addition to my dockyard, following a posting on the Mayhem sales section. Not my own build, but just the kind of unusual warship that appeals to me. Descartes of 1894. A few photo’s to express my appreciation.
Within a week I had done a bit of rewiring: (Sorry, my preference). 2 x 9.6V NiMh 5Ah batteries, a P94L controller, P19 BEC and a Planet Rx. Bath testing distributed half a kilo of solder-bar ballast between the ribs. Ready to sail.
The ensign is a bit big. I have been trying to call Mike Allsop at Scale Flags & Ensigns. Internal access is almost full length thanks to the tall internal coffer dam.
A small amount of detailing left to do. Some rigging, gun port retaining ropes, and 1/96 French sailors - half mil ball bearings supplied for their red pompoms.

Twin 457’s give more than enough power through the George Sitek 44 mm props, requiring only low throttle for scale cruising. She turns reasonably on the P94 in mode 4 with almost zero list. A real pleasure to sail.
Many thanks Tony. A superb build, as I hope the pictures show. TLC assured.

Waterproof the electrics Bob! :}

O ye of little faith >>:-(
The top of the close fitting coffer dam is more than an inch and a half above the waterline. Not a drop inside.
(Anyway, the lake is a scale 640 fathoms.)

All this French is making feel like a pastisse:O)
She looks a gem Bob and I hope you get many hours of fun out of her, she looks festooned with weapons; I like the look of those Hotchkiss rotary cannon. :}
-
Thanks. I posted this to show my appreciation for the fine detail work by TonyH, the small thumbnail pictures on his sales post did not do her justice.

Sapristi Ken,
Your schoolboy French is worse than mine!

Looks good Ken, you say the ensign is a bit large, but what I have seen of modern French warships, their ensigns are so big compared to our boats I always thought they could fit sheets and sail them when they had a M/E failure.
-
The French everyday ensign was about the same size
as an RN Battle Ensign. %% %% %%

A few minor mods over the last week. The rudder needed to be a bit larger than scale, as advised. She can now turn in just under twice her own length.
I had fitted 2 x 9.6V 5Ah NiMh batteries, but only using one at a time required a club rescue push after only an hour and a quarter. I normally prefer my boats to do at least 2 hour sailing without having to fish them out. So, I fitted an Action P103 Parallel Power Board to use both at the same time. Yes I could have just wired them in parallel but I thought I'd try the P103 for extra protection as they are big packs. Finally, the smaller French ensign from Scale Flags and Ensigns arrived.
Sailed her again on Sunday. Very stable. Very dry inside. A real pleasure to run.

You are a very lucky man Bob.
I saw her in the back of Tony's car when he dropped off the Marriotte submarine to me at Wicksteed. She looked magnificent, glad you bought her as she is very tempting but hopefully both Descartes and Marriotte will sail together later on in the year at Ron's.
I had the little sub up and running for Wicksteed at War weekend and she looked lovely on the water too.
-
I concur Nick. I would love to see photo's of the Marriotte submarine on the water. Any chance?
I am sure both vessels would greatly appreciate a 'reunion', with a Toast to Tony.
Anyway, I can now get back to completing the Poly pneumatics upgrade.

Hi Bob
I'l upload some pictures this weekend of Marriotte, lovely models the pair of them, hats off to Tony.

As promised, pictures of Marriotte on the water

Just a bit of vaseline and she was watertight and sailed for an hour with no problems, lovely model Tony, thank you.
-
Bootiful, really bootiful. Lovely detailing. She looks superb on the water :-))

My next cunning plan was/is at 1:36 but with all the talk about Jutland, I'll just have to make some 1:96 opposition for you lot. Don't worry, it's one that was sunk intentionally on the day!

What an interesting design! Those French naval designers were kooky!

Can't wait to find out more about your cunning plan. Knowing you it's bound to be a Cordon Bleu quality.
(Ooops. I may be told off by Ken for using foreign expressions :embarrassed: )
-
Does the cunning plan begin with an 'L'? :-))
Andy
-
Would that it did Andy, but at 1:36 I'd need a JCB for the launching party!
No, the 'cunning plan' was around at the time of Jutland but didn't take part. That said, I reckon I could complete a couple of the Hochseeflotte torpedo boats at 1:96 (including B98 which was sunk) that should add to the general scrum at Jutland.
Cheers
Tony
