For those wanting working winches for their tugs, Hobbyking has just announced some intended for a 1/10 scale Land Rover Defender model.

I'm not fully convinced they would do the job. More than the pulling capacity what we need is actually braking/holding capacity. I suspect these would unspool under load, unless powered.

But for the sake of science (and mostly laziness  %% ) I ordered one from eBay a week ago for my next Springer.

I'm also testing a home-made winch with a worm gear (which is self locking).

Ive had one and they are only controlled either ON or OFF there is no slowing it down or winding a bit out then bringing it in.

I have the smaller winch on my SDM tug, hiding behind the scale winch.
The winch will spool with a dead weight of 0.90kg, 2 pounds.
It works fine for winching in, but unless there is significant drag from the tow, it is
difficult to pay out line.
