Title: What this flag ?
Post by: Xtian29 on July 02, 2015, 03:27:54 pm
Hello

Maybe someone knows this flag, perhaps Arrow5, If I remember correctly, he is a Flag Master

The unknown flag (for me) is the one below the "Betsy Ross"  (early US flag),  the other one is French (oeuf corse  %) )

The mystery flag looks like an hybrid beeween the Hawaiian flag and early us flag as not a lot of stars.

It was flying by the L'Hermione when arrived in New York yesterday.

Thanks in advance for any information

Looks similar to the John Paul Jones Serapis flag http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagfact.html except that the top stripe is red instead of blue.

I agree with Colin.
It's the only flag that looks right.
Colin beat me to it.

Interresting and prompt answers - It make sense as the original L'Hermione came to America in 1780  less than a year after the battle of Flamborough Head

She came with Lafayette and then she participated in some combats in the American War of Independence.

Then there are some confusions about flag and ensign flying at that time with the US.

Thanks Colin and Ned

An interesting read at - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_United_States - which indicates that there was a great many variations in the early years before the adoption of a "national standard" flag.  The red, white and blue stripes were a valid option around 1778/9, according to the article.
Since the adoption of the standard, there have been many changes.

1775 & 76 were popular years for American flags...!

If this was in the caption section, the L'Hermoine would be going, "you American, you do not push me - I warn you, you do not push me, right zen I show you" then the cannons come out

Linda Roorda 03.07.2015
"You asked the name of L’Hermione’s middle flag with red, white and blue bars. It appears to be the “Franklin Flag – The first flag with red, white and blue stripes. Believed by some to have been designed by Benjamin Franklin and flown by John Paul Jones in his engagement with the Serapis in 1779. Presented by the Virginia Society.”

Hello Derek

In his blog Will asked about this flag after I was questioning him about it on previous post dated 1st of July

Then I ask my question also on Mayhem on 2nd July  as I know there is some flag specialists - I was suprised with an answer 10 min after posting

Then the comment you talk about, the one from Linda is dated 3rd of July

Colin is the best : Ten minutes for a right and relevant answer   :-))
