Title: The new crossover in the offshore industry?
Post by: Brian60 on July 03, 2015, 08:28:23 pm
A nice conversion, sticking a semi submersible rig on a supply vessel. Kill two birds with one welding torch %%

Hey webbo.....that is a brilliant optical illusion there  O0 .....where is the AFT PORT or the [sixth] jack-up leg?....... {-) ....

Last year I did a little investigative work for the builders of MV Brave Turn......Derek

I was imaginng a funny animation based on that image of it walking through the sea:O) It amazes me hat we can do with ships these days. I assume the girders these legs are all mounted in must be gigantic. Is the hull built around it or is it all intergral?

I found this animation of a windmill installation ship working https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPOrpDFbgr4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPOrpDFbgr4)

Inside the 6 white box's are massive hydraulic rams attached to large crossbeams which fit into the gaps you see on each leg ,the legs are about 4mt square, they push the legs down and raise the ship, think we can work in about 50 ft of water.(simple explanation)

Thanks for the description. I suppose the hull is a large girder in its self so the cross girders just add to the strength.

Here's another. Bet nobody else on the fairway at St Andrews has a golf T as big as this.

Will they use the same ship to pull the stupid windmills down, when our useless government wakes up and realises what a total waste of money they are

think one of the first wind farms went up off the Thames ,so I guess you southerners were the first to receive the electricity from the stupid windmills

I doubt very much electricity is produced anywhere in the UK from these things, not even for us southerners, whatever that means, very derogatory! The can not be used if it is too windy, the company gets paid for this. They can not be used if there is not much wind, the companies get paid for this, and when the are running and producing what little energy they do the companies get paid for this.

They are not environmentally friendly, CO2 is produced to make all of the components in the stupid things. They have ships installing them that can burn bunker oil, heavy oil or diesel fuel.

If these are the future of our energy, then start buying a lot of candles you are going to need them

Yup land based ones have around 1000Tons of concrete at the base. Utilisation in the UK is around 27% , Denmarks is around 18%!
Also some need electricity to rotate the blades when there is no wind to stop the bearings spalling. The gearboxes struggle as well because of the loadings. I was reading on the flight from CPH last night of a new hydraulic solution, no gearbox.

For every tonne of concrete used in the construction, a tonne of CO2 is produced to make that concrete

There is thousands of wind turbines in the world, in particular in NORWAY and in DENMARK

Think you that these people are stupid?

When you think what you get out off them, YES!. In this country we are paying a lot of money to companies to put up these stupid things, because we always suck up to what the EU dictate. These things are one of the reasons our electricity bills are so high, the other is foreign companies owning our electricity companies and having a large say in how it is produced.
Nuclear energy is another area where the cost of our electricity is being dictated to by foreign companies, because they just care about their profit which their shareholders like to see

Ah Gazou, If wind is so wonderful why do the French concentrate on the dependable Nuclear generation and little on the erratic wind??

106% of the French demand supplied by nuclear  and 1.72% by wind at this time.

Gazou
Over 95% of electricity produced in Norway is from hydro-electric plants

 Is this more relevant?

Summer in the North Sea Sparkling sea and busy boats.

Seems like every rig in sight has it's own attendant jack-up towering over the top of it.

So, if the ships are carrying giant balls, I assue others are carrying equally Hooooge clubs and firing mechanisms?

Not giant balls, but toadstool infestations. O0 A by-product of global warming or the holes in the ozone layer, and cruise ships are particularly susceptible. - Tom

And warships, they have had the condition for years, look at Bismark and Prinz Eugen!
