... Im thinking of replacing all my grain of rice bulbs with led's, Id like to know if you think its a good idea and whats required for q 12v system?

It is a good idea if you use proper resistors.
The LED will not fail in the next 50 years if you limit the current to 15mA :}
You just need to remember that the usual 3mm LED do not emit like a normal bulb. Thatīs why I use 0603 or 1206 SMD LED.
Those have 140° emitting angle.
12V system is fine, you can put 3-5 LED (depending on color) in series and limit the current by a proper resistor.
Just use one of the calculators in the net.

Or just buy 12v LEDs with the resistors built in! You can buy them in 3mm or smaller micro versions.

Be aware that 0603 SMD LEDs are 3mm long x 2.2mm wide. That's about the size of a cooked grain of basmati rice. Soldering manually is thus a little tricky :o
Unless you are Stan Reffin, who does a special sort of magic 8)

Not soo difficult at all if you use double-sided adhesive tape to hold them and laquered wire.
I have soldered hundrets of them but killed a lot of them in the beginning. Now my failure rate is maybe 1%.
Not sure about the UK but there is a german seller on fleabay who also sells prewired SMD LED:

Stavros is spot on the Component shop is the place for your LED's, I have used their bright led's with a resistor on the positive side very successfully running on 12 volts each led having its own supply i.e. + and - , what I did was to trim the led tails (the long one is the positive and they only work one way) then put a small crocodile clip at the led end as close as possible to the led then solder the wire on, the clip acts as a heat sink consequently the led doesn't get fried. Trust me if I can do this anyone can my soldering leaves an awful lot to be desired. Hope this helps.
