Title: Ailsa model yachts
Post by: misog on July 12, 2015, 03:06:09 PM
I purchased yesterday one of these yachts from a local bric a brack shop, but I think it's missing a bow sprit.
Is anyone able to confirm what I'm thinking? I've looked on the VMBG web site and they list the smallest ailsa yacht as 17 inches which seems to confirm what I'm thinking as the hull is 16".
Any info appreciated

Well being the impatient type and it's a boring Sunday afternoon, I bit the bullet and made a bowsprit for the Ailsa.
I think it looks right now, but I'm sure you guys will tell me if it's not.
Next question is how to restore it if that's the right question.
You can see from the pics it's been a well used yacht. But I don't want to repaint it, I like the old look.
Would it be ok to give it a few cots of satin varnish to restore the sea worthiness, or is that a no no?

Hello,

No Bowsprit !!!.

The boat was rigged OK before, you now have a big gap between the two sails.
The gap is called The Slot, when it is too big, the sails will not work properly.

John

Many thanks for the reply, I take on board everything you say. But I can't find a photo of one of these yachts without a bow sprit?.

I think it should have one, but maybe a bit shorter which I will do, as I think the big eyes on the fore deck can't be for any thing else.

As always, if anyone knows different, I have an open mind!
