Title: SDM Mark I
Post by: steve mahoney on July 13, 2015, 09:57:35 pm
Attached are some photos of my last project – an SDM Mark I. I've seen several MkIIs on various sites and was one of the UK magazines featured a MkI made by Steve Cox. I was inspired by Umi and JPCat from RCGroups to have a go at an earlier MkI. My model is an amalgam of the 4 Seabulk MkIs working in Florida: Escambia, New River, Suwanney River and St Johns. They are all slightly different in their equipment so I've taken elements from each of them. Scale 1/50.
I actually had the whole thing finished but an incident after a night out with the boys, tripping over the dog in the dark and putting an elbow through the superstructure set things back a bit. The wheelhouse, funnels and all railings were totalled and required a complete rebuild. I was so annoyed (to say the least) that I put repairs on the back burner for a few months. Every time I looked at the damage I lost heart. It had been finished and I had already lost interest in it when the accident happened so it took some time to get back onto it.
Then work and stuff got in the way and after a 6 month break I could eventually get it back on the bench.
I didn't photograph the damage – too embarrassing, but I'll bring this build up to date. The complete build is on

Some close ups of the details. Not happy with the look of the Graupner drives but they are staying. Boat doesn't handle too well, impossible to get it to go in a straight line. Spins, goes sideways, crabs – but very hard to get going straight. Anyway I'm well into the next project so the SDM has been relegated to the shelf for the time being. I enjoy building them more than sailing them so the next one is static only. The safety tape isn't on the real boats but here it hides the line of the access plate to the motors, steering, electronics, etc.
