Post by: Stan on August 06, 2015, 05:08:30 pm
Hi now that the minesweeper build is coming to the end I have 2 models in build U S S  Whitehall and also the Elco boat. Just  a few pictures showing motors /props and rudders. Rudders need more work on them before final fitting.

Very neat work Stan. Your shafts are exposed I take it with just short tubes to make the transit through the hull water tight?

Hi Guys fitting out is now completed. Everything ready for sea trials on Sunday. I have opted for 27 MHz to control this model is seems a shame to fit a four channel set when you only need two. I have enclosed some close up shots of the internals some of these may have already been posted  sorry about that. The aerial wire is fed through plastic tubes and will be tensioned  using a elastic band something from my model flying days .

Stan,
Not a great lover of the long exposed shafts after the coupling without any support.

Post by: Stan on August 15, 2015, 10:55:17 am
HI Bob the distance from the end of the couplings is very small no problems with vibration at all. The motors run perfectly but if some are needed simple to fit. All the external shaft supports have bearings fitted to them and also brass pegs that go  into the hull giving more support.

HI the brass fittings with the screw in the top are from SLEC OR Sun lane engineering. The small bell cranks are from Deans marine hope this helps.

Sunday 16/8/15 Elco had first sea trial major problem with noise from motor couplings at full revs. These have been removed and Robbe rubber connectors fitted this has reduced the noise. The 385 motors gave a good scale speed.

Nice build, i to used the red version of these couplings and found lots of vibration and noise!!! :((    Fitted a coupling from Marks Model Boat Bits ( it uses a plastic / rubber type coupling tube ) and hey presto, silent as a mouse and no vibration. :-)
                                      Regards, Dave.

Old couplings removed rubber tube fitted no further vibration  problems. New 27mhz radio taken back due to range problems model is now fitted with Tamco 2.4 set. At 11.1 volts a nice scale speed is obtained I have tried motors up to 14.4 volts to noisy. I wanted a scale look to this model hence the use of brushed motors.

Sea trial done this afternoon much better motors only slightly warm. Final fitting consists of the following

Three MFA 385 motors  One 11.1 volt lipo battery. Two channel Tamco 2. 4 radio set.  A  M troniks Tio speed controller. A 10 amp fuse is fitted this handles all three motors with no problems. Hoping to move on the building now.

Saturday morning managed to get a few hours in. I have fitted 1/4 sq hard balsa under the deck . Fitting the braces I hope will stop or reduce the spring in the deck area when you snap fit the superstructure in place. I have used a building adhesive Sticks all from everbuild to fit the balsa braces.

Back in the garage now just done a little on the Elco. The brass etch plate that fits around the towing eye has been put in the bin to thick for my liking. I have made one from plastic card sheet marked and drilled out for the rivet positions. I have used plastic rivets from S B Models Barrow in Furness see pictures attached more to follow on this build. The product range is called Grandt Line.

Still painting.  Seems to go on for ever. Just a few pictures showing the masking of small deck items. Even with a fine tip in my a/brush  I still need a large area to be masked off. On the stern hatch I have used 2in wide tape and shaped it like small box this allows me to be able to spray in all directions with no overspray. If you have in your area a quay plastics trade outlet I can recommend there masking tape for the large area work save the Tamiya for more detailed work

Hi Stan,

Pity the WEM paint is no longer available although I must say I prefer working with acrylics. Especially the light green colour (US Navy WWII 2 green) puzzled me, somehow it looks different whenever the lighting conditions change but I would now say that Tamiya Field Grey (XF 65) is a very close match. I'm looking forward to some action footage and some pics of your crew. I bought both Italeri PT crew sets and have carried out some surgery on them (e.g. increasing the length of some legs) and reshaping helmets. I must confess I even drilled out their torsos to get rid of a few grams, needless to say I'm an obsessive weight watcher  ;) .

Regards,

Arjan

The kit was made by Robbe sadly they have folded. You could try contacting Krick to see if they plan to release the kit in the future. Please note my model is not built from the kit lots of scratch building to do.
