Title: Rhyl Mersey Class Lifeboat
Post by: gribeauval on August 12, 2015, 10:55:45 pm
Next build on to the slipway is a 1/12th scale model of the Rhyl Mersey Class for my North Wales client.

I already hade a grp Mersey hull in the back of my workshop so it was dug out and checked over. It looked to be ideal for the build, but after a few weeks of looking at it and checking I decided that it wasn't up to the standard, in both finish and dimensional accuracy, that I wanted so............. scratch build hull time!! The superstructure was already going to be scratch built as it is to have a full interior etc.

The file box with the Mersey drawings was opened and the lines for the hull printed at 1/12th scale along with 21 copies of the body lines and stuck onto the "work in progress" pin board in my hallway.

The pattern for the keel made, ready to transfer to the ply.

A construction board was prepared with the centre line and the 21 hull stations marked. Brackets to keep the keel in position (and straight !!) were also fixed in place.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-003_zpsjyqjc8l0.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-003_zpsjyqjc8l0.jpg.html)

The keel was cut out, ruffle holes drilled, set up on the board and checked that it was square to the surface in all directions as any deviation at this stage results in building a banana boat not a lifeboat!!

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-004_zpsjbaxad1d.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-004_zpsjbaxad1d.jpg.html)

I have also made a jig for fitting the frames. This has the top edge at the level of the designed waterline as shown on the drawings from the underside of the keel. It is also kept vertical using the same brackets as for the keel. Each of the patterns for the stations has this designed waterline marked on them so that they can all be set at the correct hight.

This stage of the build is going to take a little time so bear with me and it will also fit with the Severn build that will be going to Cornwall (http://r14.imgfast.net/users/1413/25/46/12/smiles/263602217.gif).

Here are the results of three days work (started building on Monday after making the jigs over the last weekend) showing the frame jig in operation and the top location beams to keep the frames in place.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-006_zpsexfzojde.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-006_zpsexfzojde.jpg.html)

The spaces between the solid front frames will be filled with blocks of urethane foam before planking to provide reserve buoyancy just in case it's needed (Just like the real thing!! :-)) )

Six frames fitted. only fifteen left to go !! At two or three frames a day, I like to allow the glue to go off properly ( the Gorilla glue needs about 2-3 hours to be safe) before moving to the next frame, I should be ready to plank in about a week.  {-)

The last frame has now been fitted in place and the urethane foam blocks added at the stern.

The foam infill at the bow section will be added next (after my holiday  :-)) ) then planking can be started.

My short holiday over so it's back to the building board again!!

The stern blocks fitted earlier have now been sanded to final shape.  The bow blocks have also been added and shaped as well and the hull is now ready to plank.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-010_zpsqt9q5jbp.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-010_zpsqt9q5jbp.jpg.html)

The tops of the deck beams have been checked for 'fairness' with a large flexible rule and it touches at every point giving the gracefull reflex curve of a Mersey deck from stern to bow. (http://r14.imgfast.net/users/1413/25/46/12/smiles/263602217.gif) The location of the access holes in the deck can now be taken from the GA drawings and plotted onto the beams so that the coamings can be fitted and the sections of beam removed as needed.

Finally a view along the prop tunnels and they look OK as well.

I can now prepare the first layer of planks and start adding them over the weekend.

Looks good, alot of work, Is this going to be a making of a mould or just a hull?

Just going to be a hull as I don't like working with grp unless I am forced to do so.

The position of the superstructure has been plotted onto the deck beams, extra deck reinforcing added and the centre sections removed to give me access to the interior of the hull.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-014_zpsuamir5hw.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-014_zpsuamir5hw.jpg.html)

The beam sections that were removed have not gone to waste !!  They have been used to stiffen up the side decks.

Decks and coaming next on the agenda.

All the glued frame components have now fully cured so the deck was next to be fitted.

This was glued in place in five sections (two at the bow, one at the stern and the two side decks) to accomodate both the sheer and camber of the Mersey deck. The slot in the bows for the recovery strop will be opened up after planking. The final shaping will also be done after the planking is completed

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-016_zps67cf1de8.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-016_zps67cf1de8.jpg.html)

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-017_zpsbvl9fhyp.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-017_zpsbvl9fhyp.jpg.html)

When these had been fitted  the main coaming was added. This was made from 1.5mm thick material as it has to fit between the two skins of the superstructure as there is to be a fully detailed interior fitted. This is the method I first used on the Tyne class lifeboat RFA Sir Galahad to great effect.

Planking has now commenced!!

The first layer is being done with a combination of thin and wide planks, on the flatter sections of the hull, and after sanding and adding reinforcing on the inside will allow the final shape to be corrected with filler where needed.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-019_zpsoaa0rban.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-019_zpsoaa0rban.jpg.html)

This stern view shows the sweep of the tunnels into the rest of the hull.

The top layer of planks will be fitted with much closer joints. :-))

Title: Re: Rhyl Mersey Class Lifeboat
Post by: gribeauval on September 30, 2015, 08:39:54 pm
Finally finished fitting the planks onto the hull framework. The inside has been given a coat of polyester resin to harden up the balsa planks and also to ensure that they are firmly fixed to each other.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-022_zpsctcgljez.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-022_zpsctcgljez.jpg.html)

When the resin had cured fully the whole of the outside was covered with a thick layer of ordinary filler and now looks like an iceberg! Over 95% of this will be sanded off in a few days, when it has fully hardened, just leaving it in any hollows and the small gaps. This sanded surface will then be coated with sanding sealer and lightweight aircraft tissue to harden the outside and make it ready for painting.

Just spent the last two days covered in white powder and looking like a snowman whilst sanding most of the filler back off the hull !!

The hull is now looking like a Mersey and not a large white blob. The bilge keels have been cut to size, shaped, bonded and faired into the hull. Also the stand for the boat has also been built.

I can now add the top layer of tissue and dope, plus more sanding, then start to add the main structural details onto the hull, I also need to cut the recovery stop channel on the bow deck.

Whilst waiting for the resin on the outside of the hull to harden off I made some of the external hull bits.

The twin rudders have been fabricated from styrene.

The frame has been fitted onto the stern and faired in to the tunnels and the rudder tubes also glued in place.

A major cock up has occured with the outer skinning of the hull. In places the resin matting has refused to bond to the hull properly or refused to set. This may cause problems with the final finish later down the line so after trying to solve the problem for several days I have decided to switch to Plan B!!

This means that the grp hull I have is in for a major remodelling job, sort of a face lift and nose job combined with botox!!!

Inside the hull the keel space at the bow and strern has been filled with resin to allow the outside to be reshaped with the big power sanders.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-031_zpsmlamviv1.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-031_zpsmlamviv1.jpg.html)

The profile of the sheer line has also been altered  as new decking sections have been added.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-032_zpsmcf5bw7k.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-032_zpsmcf5bw7k.jpg.html)

The stern has also been 'remodelled with the sanders and the positions for the exhausts and ram boxes plotted.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-033_zpsvvibijim.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-033_zpsvvibijim.jpg.html)

The shafts and rudder blocks are now bonded in place in this hull.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-034_zpsipowpzfm.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-034_zpsipowpzfm.jpg.html)

New motor mount is under construction.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-035_zpsvv1jybag.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-035_zpsvv1jybag.jpg.html)

I have also solved the problem of making the recesses for the exhausts that are moulded into the stern During a visit to a local pound shop this morning the answer appered in the shape of plastic shot glasses!! The base of these are the correct diameter for the recesses. So a section was cut off the lower end of the glass.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-036_zps7e4lv5vg.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-036_zps7e4lv5vg.jpg.html)

Styrene discs were cut and glued to the removed section. These are where the bolts that hold the pipe in place are fitted.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-037_zps0w1valks.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-037_zps0w1valks.jpg.html)

34mm diameter holes were cut into the stern with a stepped cone drill.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-038_zpsypxhnaki.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-038_zpsypxhnaki.jpg.html)

The new recesses bonded and sealed in place, after sanding flush the exhausts themselves can be added.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-039_zpsrzwhkihq.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-039_zpsrzwhkihq.jpg.html)
Next on the agenda will be the reinforcing for the end of the tunnels and the ram boxes.

Can now relax at the Blackpool Boat Show tomorrow, talk Lifeboats with old friends and pick up more supplies for the build. Hi Mike, I had this trouble with resin not setting and after consulting the experts I found out. If you are using waxed resin you have to shake it well to disperse the wax as it settles out at the top. If not you get wax rich liquid which looks like resin. I might be telling a gran to suck eggs, if so I am sorry. Cheers Bill Carpenter

Thanks for the information Bill. I will leave the first hull alone for a month or two  then remove any sticky patches left with solvent and redo the whole thing with epoxy finishing resin which should rescue all that work.

Meantime it's on with the grp hull.  :-))

I have finally finished the major mods to the grp hull  !!

At the bow end the forefoot has been slimmed down, the ruffle holes opened up and the recovery strop groove made. This was done by inserting a styrene channel faired into the stem, it was also continued into the deck to allow the strops to pass under the bow fitting.

The side view of the hull now has the profile I wanted.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-043_zpsjpbbfeij.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-043_zpsjpbbfeij.jpg.html)

The kink in the keel has been removed by the addition of a straight section on top of the existing keel and adding filler where needed plus sanding back as required. The stern ruffle holes have been done and the bilge keels fitted onto the hull.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-044_zpsvqnkqbho.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-044_zpsvqnkqbho.jpg.html)

On the transom the new tunnel edge frame is in place and the ram recesses inserted and sealed in place. The rest of the deck has also been fixed in place.

Whilst waiting for a break in the weather to allow the spraying of the filler coats I have made the trim tabs ready to fit later.

With all the fog and rain over the last few days spraying of filler coats has not been possible so it has been on with wheelhouse construction!

First on the agenda is the rear wall as this needs to support the mast structure. Styrene was chosen as when used with solvent cement a solid stucture can be produced.

Back wall cut out, raised platform fitted and intake boxes etc made.

A second wall was cut out but this time with an extension down to the floor level within the wheelhouse as an interior is to be fitted. This interior wall was fitted onto the first wall but with spacers to allow the unit to fit over the coaming.

You appear to be achieving a near perfect constant edge radius fairing on or in all of your structure joints.......this in itself is very impressive :-)) ... Derek

It's great what you can do with a bit of filler and a lot of patience. {-)

The outer side walls have been marked up for the vents etc, the window openings cut out and the inner wall skins cut and fitted.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-056_zpsczbdsw2p.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-056_zpsczbdsw2p.jpg.html)

The two walls are separated by a full length spacer that allow the coaming to fit between the lower edges of the two skins.

This is a wonderful site with all these fascinating build projects going on.

A wealth of knowledge for such as me to be able to ogle at and tap into once I have spent more time watching.

Your build Mr Gribeauval of this lifeboat is absolutely amazing. Where did you gain such knowledge to put in all that detailing into such a lifeboat.

Were you a crewman on one of these, as the build is staggering.

It makes me even more determined  to acquire a lifeboat model to try to make myself, If I can get hold of one myself at a decent price.

My friend sold the Liverpool lifeboat I had asked him to bid on and bought at the auction for me on Ebay auction site so maybe by Christmas I will have something to get my teeth into. The gent who bought it is picking it up from my friends house tomorrow. You never know.

Jim.

Thanks for your comments Jim.

Never been a crewman as I live 70 miles from the coast!!  The details come from visiting lifeboat stations, having as many detail drawings as possible, talking to the mechanics and crew plus about 200 photos of each boat I build ( In the case of Merseys I have about 600-700 pictures of different boats of the class).

I have been building model boats for the last 55 years (about as long as Neil  {-) ) so it's a lot of practice and mistakes made along the way.

The holes in the sides of the wheelhouse that take the fuel fillers, main air intakes and vents have been cut out on both sides of the wheelhouse and the appropriate parts made and fixed in place.

The main air intakes that run inside of the wheelhouse and down to the engine room have been constructed from sheet styrene.

So how do I change the rules to our 2016 Mayor's Cup, so as to give others a chance of winning ?

Maybe it would be easier to ask Rhyl RNLI to hold their Open day on 24th July !

Only three pictures today after a full day's building.

The front window panels for the wheelhouse have been cut to size (there are no right angles on any of the panels!!) , the openings for the windows marked out and opened up and, along with the infill panels that butt up to the front superstructure, fitted in place.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-068_zpsgehzaiqv.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-068_zpsgehzaiqv.jpg.html)

The majority of today has been taken up with the building of the central front panel and the watertight door that, on the full size boat, leads into the engine room. It will look a lot better when painted!

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-069_zpsjzsbhrsk.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-069_zpsjzsbhrsk.jpg.html)

Finally the panel has been fixed in place under the windows and makes the front of the wheelhouse a lot more rigid!

I have been busy with non modelling related activities today, but I still found some time to make a couple of the most important parts of a lifeboat, without which the crew could not function at 100%.

Their function becomes more obvious when you rotate the cylinder through 180 degrees and add the detail parts to the 'block'.

Yes it's the water boiler and cup holders that are positioned just inside the wheelhouse door on the Port side. A friend of mine who is a full time RNLI Station Mechanic told me his first action upon entering the wheelhouse to go and start the engines for a shout is to ensure that the boiler in on or mutiny will follow!!!!!!

The cup holder is now in place alongside the door, as well as the shelf above it for the boiler.

On the forward part of the superstructure the large access panels, that on the full size boat allow the engines to be removed, have been fitted in place and the hatch openings plotted, cut out and the coamings added.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-074_zpsygf9lyyo.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-074_zpsygf9lyyo.jpg.html)

The interiors of the rope lockers have also been made and glued in place under the hatch openings. The front hatch on the full size boat allows access to the forward survivors cabin.

Got a little further along with the build.

The three hatches for the foredeck have been constructed, again from styrene, ready to fit after painting is complete.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-077_zpsstnfhu7v.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-077_zpsstnfhu7v.jpg.html)

The catches that hold them in the open position have also been made using styrene and part of the hinge section from a OO railway coupling as the hook, another example of lateral thinking to solve a problem!! These will also be fitted after painting is complete.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-079_zps0r18djsw.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-079_zps0r18djsw.jpg.html)

The two consoles for either side of the central door have been constructed and fitted into the cabin.

I have also made the two seat bases that are used for equipment storage, again to be fitted later in the build.

Yes, chemical variety, in the foreward survivors cabin of the Mersey Class.

Finally the sun shone this morning and raised the outside temperature by a few degrees, there was no rain for a change, but most importantly the wind was non existant so I managed to get a couple of coats of spray filler/primer on the hull this morning. This has shown me all the tiny pin holes and scratches on the hull and allowed me to fill them with some very fine surface filler. The whole hull will now be sanded down in a couple of days when the filler is fully hard and then the process repeated before adding the normal primers (2 coats) and colours (3 coats).

Two more of the air intake trunkings have been made and fitted to the port and starboard sides of the wheelhouse interior either side of the main consoles.

Between the bouts of rain and gale force winds over the past week I have managed to paint the hull at last, just the gloss varnish coats left to do.

At the rear of the wheelhouse the metal side grills under the raised upper platform have been cut and fitted. These will also allow the engine sounds from the deck mounted speaker to be heard more clearly.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-089_zpsnp1dqdze.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-089_zpsnp1dqdze.jpg.html)

Inside, at the front, the upper instrument consoles have been made and fitted ready to paint and detail later. The top part of these also forms the supports for the roof section.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-090_zpsicvxjvmx.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-090_zpsicvxjvmx.jpg.html)

The trunking on the walls for the cables has now been made and fitted to both sides of the wheelhouse. These will be used to pass the wiring the upper wiring into the boat as per the original.

At the rear of the wheelhouse the plate decking has been added to the platform and the steps down into the interior.

Your scale shipwright/boat builders are doing a superb job here  O0.....in the real construction, is the assembly of all of the panels shown by stainless steel riveted or metal thread screw construction?

As the only place I can see where you miniature TIG welders have been at work is the vertical U channel sections holding the hinge pins .......allowing the hatches to open

Keep the build images coming along  :-))..... Derek

As the only place I can see where you miniature TIG welders have been at work is the vertical U channel sections holding the hinge pins .......allowing the hatches to open

Keep the build images coming along  :-)) ..... Derek

On the full size boats many of the access panels were fastened by stainless steel bolts. A prime example is the on the foredeck where the two large bolted panels were removable to allow the engines to be removed if needed. All the window frames were also removable as they were also bolted in place. As the wheelhouse needed to be airtight to make the boat self righting all these removable items were bolted down onto gaskets.  ;)

As the weather was still nice today after all the rain and wind, the hull was masked off and the deck given a coat of primer, as well as the front part of the superstructure.

Its amazing how something is transformed with a bit of grey primer. It makes it stand out more.

Are you going to paint the wheelhouse interior the matt black?

Over the past week, amongst having to do  "Christmas things" ( Ho sodding Ho) I dug out the silicone mould I made for the seats and cast in resin the several sets needed.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-099_zpsdsfjdgjh.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-099_zpsdsfjdgjh.jpg.html)

From scraps of styrene I made a jig to ensure that all the seat backs were fixed at the same angle and glued the two parts of each seat together.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-100_zpswtkvfnw7.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-100_zpswtkvfnw7.jpg.html)

A jig was also made to allow the arms, made from styrene, to all be bent at the same angle.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-101_zpsdslbdv7u.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-101_zpsdslbdv7u.jpg.html)

Once all the parts had been assembled and the glues allowed to harden off, the seats were given a coat of primer and a final coat of satin black.

These are now ready to be fitted onto the stands.

and glue short lengths of the tube onto the crowns of the hats also removing the peaks............

These now represent the "air blowers" that can be swiveled to channel fresh air to the crew and are fixed to the inner ceiling for the wheelhouse. The large gap is where mountings for the navigation system will be fitted.

I am increasingly amazed by the ingenuity of you scratch build modellers to think laterally and find items that I would never dream of, in order to fabricate items for your models.

Fantastic.

Having been out of action since Christmas day until last weekend through illness it is a pleasure to get back into the workshop again and do some building. (http://r14.imgfast.net/users/1413/25/46/12/smiles/263602217.gif)
Making a slow start, and the three swivel seat bases have been made and the seats, cast and assembled earlier, have been fitted.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-109_zps6qvnwzb9.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%2520Mersey/Hull-109_zps6qvnwzb9.jpg.html)

The other two seats have been fitted onto the box structures, again made earlier, and after being painted they have been detailed as they are also used for the stowage of equipment onboard the full size boat.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-110_zpskex8orif.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%2520Mersey/Hull-110_zpskex8orif.jpg.html)

These seats will all be fitted into the wheelhouse after the interior painting has been completed.

Back into the full swing of building again . (http://r14.imgfast.net/users/1413/25/46/12/smiles/263602217.gif)

The interior of the wheelhouse has now been painted and the wooden panels fitted onto the walls in the back corner.

Only a couple of pictures to show for a lot of small fiddly building jobs.
The circuit breaker/fuse panel that lives under the table has been made and fixed onto the wall (just visible behind the swivel chair!). The remaining two seats built earlier have been fixed in place, the floor storage lockers made and added, more of the instruments and handsets made and fitted ( about half of them now done!!), the grab rail bent from brass rod and added (this also supports the end of the map table) and the bench seat at the rear completed with its cushion and backrest.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-116_zpslictnydx.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-116_zpslictnydx.jpg.html)

I have also started on the modification of the figure for the helm position. He will be inside the wheelhouse because if he was placed on the upper steering position he would be in the way when the mast folds down!

Easter break over, Arun I was working on delivered, so it's back to the building here. (http://r14.imgfast.net/users/1413/25/46/12/smiles/263602217.gif)

Easing myself back into the work today I made the radar scope for the front console.

It contains a small yellow led so that when the radar scanner on the mast is turning this interior screen will also light up.

Since the last post I have been busy with the small items needed to complete the interior.

The helsman's console has been fitted out with the switches and dials needed, the compass fitted and the helmsman finished and in his seat.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-121_zpszlxvscnt.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-121_zpszlxvscnt.jpg.html)

The navigation station is now complete, the map on the table is a copy of the Admiralty chart of the coast off Rhyl. The track and blackout curtains are also in place.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-122_zpsskkvxy3v.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-122_zpsskkvxy3v.jpg.html)

The second crewman is also on board, I think he's the navigator.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-123_zpssyfqo3sw.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-123_zpssyfqo3sw.jpg.html)

The upper console has also been done.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-124_zpsy2ion7xx.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-124_zpsy2ion7xx.jpg.html)

The inner roof section has now been glued in place and the wiring, along with the fibre optics, passed down the side supports.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-125_zpsdzarzcji.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-125_zpsdzarzcji.jpg.html)

Fibre optics in the roof panel.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-127_zps7n9nr5jv.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-127_zps7n9nr5jv.jpg.html)

I can now seal up the windows and door to concentrate on the outside of the wheelhouse (and keep the dust out!!)

With the weather being fine over the last couple of days the outer roof panel was made, sanded to give the correct radius on the edges and glued in place, also the front floodlights were made and wired into the rest of the roof loom. Every opening, and the floodlights were then masked off to keep the paint out.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-128_zpssw1hw0n8.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-128_zpssw1hw0n8.jpg.html)

The whole structure was then given two coats of white primer/undercoat and, after leaving overnight, two coats of orange topcoat were applied today.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-129_zps8lv5dxwy.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-129_zps8lv5dxwy.jpg.html)

This will now be left for at least three days to allow the paint to harden off before work on the outside is started.

As the weather was very nice today I spent some time this morning masking off the front part of the superstructure on the hull and giving it its colour coats.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-130_zpsy2fzepvm.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-130_zpsy2fzepvm.jpg.html)

I have also removed the masking from the windows and was extremely relieved to find that there was no orange paint inside!! The frames can now be painted and the glazing fitted.

View of the two parts reunited for a while.

Next major job to be done is the mast.
A block the size of the position of the mast on the rear of the wheelhouse was made to allow the lower mounting to be accuratly made.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-132_zpsu2reomrh.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%2520Mersey/Hull-132_zpsu2reomrh.jpg.html)

The lower mount has been made from styrene sections/sheet welded together with solvent to give it the strength needed.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-133_zpsfarqigp7.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%2520Mersey/Hull-133_zpsfarqigp7.jpg.html)

At the same time the two ladder sections of the mast were also welded together, being careful to keep everything square. The two sections are hinged together using model aircraft nylon hinge pins that fit inside the styrene tubes. The outer tubes are the conduits for the wiring.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-134_zpswqmziybc.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%2520Mersey/Hull-134_zpswqmziybc.jpg.html)

The main plate of the mast platform has also been made.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-135_zpsk0hz0smx.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%2520Mersey/Hull-135_zpsk0hz0smx.jpg.html)

The two parts, upside down, now welded into one unit.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-136_zpsdgeazk4u.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%2520Mersey/Hull-136_zpsdgeazk4u.jpg.html)

The gas assist struts at the base of the mast have been made and fitted in place.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-137_zpsrtqb55fy.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%2520Mersey/Hull-137_zpsrtqb55fy.jpg.html)

This view shows how the mast folds down.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-138_zpsdo0tyzni.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%2520Mersey/Hull-138_zpsdo0tyzni.jpg.html)

 Mast in the upright position.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-139_zpsbh3lt5if.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%2520Mersey/Hull-139_zpsbh3lt5if.jpg.html)

Top surface of the mast platform now completed.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-140_zpsavlvxcla.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%2520Mersey/Hull-140_zpsavlvxcla.jpg.html)

Next on the agenda will be to make the folding upper mast section.

The upper mast section has been made using styrene tube and sheet to keep high level weight down.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-141_zpsnhdgvk1f.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-141_zpsnhdgvk1f.jpg.html)

This section is pivoted on the lower section which was made earlier.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-142_zpsxuswidq7.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-142_zpsxuswidq7.jpg.html)

Mast in the folded position.

After painting the main mast white and the upper section black it is trial fitted onto the rear of the wheelhouse and the safety rails, which it is fastened to when upright, made and fitted in place.

The base for the spray screens has been shaped and fitted onto the roof of the wheelhouse. The main mast supports can also be more easily seen in this picture along with the locking bar and rear rails..

All the lights and radar have been fitted in place on the mast and this is the resulting nightmare of a wiring system. All these wires now have to be covered in heat shrink and then fitted into the two condits that run down either side of the mast.

After the wiring nightmare of the mast I needed a change so made a start on the deck fittings today beginning with the towing gobeye for the stern.

This is made from laminated styrene and the removable H section brazed from steel rod.

Kick boards for the stanchions next on the agenda.

The kick boards for the stanchions on a Mersey are made fron an inverted 'T' section bonded onto the deck This is not easy to find in the correct size so I decided to fabricate it myself.

First the positions for the boards was plotted and a slot cut into the decking using a mini router with a 3mm straight cutter.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-157_zps9weqwtu5.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-157_zps9weqwtu5.jpg.html)

Over high sections of 3mm birch ply were cut and glued into the slots. This was followed by the horizontal parts of 1/16th" x 5/32" strip glued onto the deck and the upright. This gives a strong fixing into the deck for the stanchions.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-158_zpsy5s4h9zf.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-158_zpsy5s4h9zf.jpg.html)

When fully cured the upright was trimmed down to the correct size, primed and will later be given a coat of the correct grey.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-159_zps36ummrms.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-159_zps36ummrms.jpg.html)

The deck surface can now be given a spray coat of anti slip paint after masking off the hull and front superstructure.

As the weather has been fine over the past couple of days I masked off the hull and and front superstructure and made ready to spray the deck.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-160_zpsw4ywupfu.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-160_zpsw4ywupfu.jpg.html)

Before anybody asks, this is the paint I use from my local branch of B&Q.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-161_zpsvedyvwkh.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-161_zpsvedyvwkh.jpg.html)

After spraying the deck looks a mess but as it dries it smooths out to a much finer finish.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-162_zpsscxk3tsa.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-162_zpsscxk3tsa.jpg.html)

When the deck had dried and the all masking removed the hull was given its RNLI corporate identity, yellow over red stripes, Hull fleet number, draught marks and at the stern the station name.

Mersey class lifeboats are recovered by driving onto the beach and hauling up with the aid of recovery strops fixed to the boat before loading onto its carriage. When not in use the free ends of the strops are held in place on the bow by an overcentre fitting.

Spent all yesterday at the Doncaster Model Boat Show buying parts and talking to old friends so I have only made the Bantex aerials that fit on each side of the wheelhouse this weekend.

These areials are hinged at the rear of the wheelhouse and, as on the full size boat, they can be lowered when the boat is housed. The piece of toothpick at the pivot is a temporary measure and will be replaced by a screw later!

More of the small bits done.

The life rings and their holders have been made, painted and, when the paint hardens off, the small details will be added and then they can be fitted on the stern rails

I have also made the drogue, in its cover, and the holder and again when the painrt hardens off it can be fixed to the rails at the rear of the wheelhouse just behind the helsman and to the starboard side of the mast.

Hi gribeauval.

Following your build with interest and Looking for a bit of advice since you are well ahead on me.

I'm looking at the shaft and prop setup on my Mersey which is being based on our own full Size Mersey (12-29). Our Mersey has open shafts so looking to reflect the same.

The FS (Full size) Props are 60cm which at 1:12 scale equates to 5cm but I forgot to measure the diameter of the shaft to scale it - if that is possible! - will measure it tonight when at station. :embarrassed:

My question is, How did you work out the length of shaft in order to get the angle correct and the position of the motors and what type of prop are you using? I've looked at prop-shop to see what is available but it is all double-dutch to me. I know I need a left and a right handed prop but don't know if i need a specific pitch and as per above, I need to measure the shaft to see if I can scale it to get the correct size of shaft for the prop.

Regards

Declan

Spent most of today finishing off the wiring of the function switches at the front of the wheelhouse.
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-224_zpsel4gtzge.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Rhyl%20Mersey/Hull-224_zpsel4gtzge.jpg.html)

Also started fitting the control system into the hull. The esc is a twin/mixer P94, a three way distribution board ( both by Action Electronics) and their newest baby. a P110 Mk2 sound system, this is so new it isn't even in the catalogue yet! It is very simple to fit, holds the sound files on an SD card, has twin sound inputs/outputs for the throttles, up to 16 other available sounds as well as the full engine start/run/stop sequence, built in amplifier and runs on any voltage between 12v and 24v. In this installation the unit at the bottom right corner takes the 7.2v from the board and ramps it up to 12v for the sound system.

Short clip of the initial run sound set up. This will be refined/tuned to the transmitter to be used when it is all in place.

Mike's model has been delivered to Garreth and had it's first outing at Colwyn Bay this morning.

The boat is a tribute to it's builder and looks magnificent on the water

Yes she does look superb on the water  :-))...is she light on scale water & fuel?.....as he appears to be riding a little high to her marks.......although naturally I have never seen a full sized version of the vessel ......... Derek

Contrary to popular belief the demarcation line between  the white lower hull and the blue upper hull is NOT THE WATERLINE. The designed water line as shown on the RNLI drawings ( I even have copies of the drawings that are not sold in the RNLI shop that are used when refitting/repainting Mersey Class lifeboats) is below the spray rail where it runs level towards the stern of the boat.

On many classes of older wooden boats this demarcation line also rises up towards the bow, and in some classes rises up at the stern as well.
