Title: Leaking bsa pocket rocket
Post by: WayneD on August 24, 2015, 07:59:34 pm
Hi notice my bait boat had sprung a leak recently after some investigation found part of the hull has a crack in near to where the weed guards are screwed into the body. I've two question really can anyone recommend a good sealant for the crack and also the screw holes as after taking the weed guard off I noticed more than one hole had been made obviously by the previous owner. My next question is instead of screwing back into the hull of the boat to secure the weed guards in hoping to glue some bolts onto the bottom of the boat and fastened down the weed guards with a nut onto the glued on bolt. Really need something solid as the weed guards are made out of stainless steel . Any help would be much appreciated as hopefully this will cure the leaks and not have to split the boat.

Welcome to the Forum.    :-))

Epoxy resin is what you need.  It's a two part mix with half an hour work time.  Mix this and place over the crack and bolt head and add a piece of fibre cloth mixed into the paste.

It should come out stronger than the boat.    :}

 Cheers

Hi thanks any particular brand. I take it putting over the screw holes etc it can be filed/sanded down. How much would you put onto the bolt head to ensure it doesn't move.

Hey Wayne!

Is a "bsa pocket rocket" a bait boat?

Anyway, Araldite, Devcon, Loctite, Zap are all popular brands of  epoxy glues.
They usually come in to types, fast (5 mins to set)  & slow (20+ mins to set), slow is usually much stronger.
They set like hard plastic. Check glue you buy iss for type material you are gluing, e.g. plastic, fiberglass, etc.

Thorough clean and light sand before gluing.

Yeah its a smaller version of blue sky angling lakestar bait boat single hopper. So it is a plastic body. My only concern is past experiences with epoxy glues is they become brittle and break again especially when I need it to hold small bolts in place. But that might have been just me and using a cheap glue B

 :-)) I always use car body resin with glass matting,use a small amount of hardener and that will give time to work it in,I have used this on my Lisa which I dropped (my fault hands were playing up that day) the repair is now the strongest part of that boat now,just make sure you clean up area and rough it up with glass paper to to give it a key then you will have strong waterproof repair............Ray :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Ray

How good is that stuff on ABS plastics?

 :-)) Well it has lasted a couple of years now,mind you I have not dropped it again but the grandkids use it as their play boat at the lake and it is water tight after several hard knocks, I know resin does not stick to some plastic's but it seems ok and I had lot of resin in the workshop at the time,some plastics are oily in nature and make sticking anything difficult whether there is different types of ABS I don't know and might be interesting to find out from someone who know the chemistry of these plastics,any thoughts on this anyone?.......Ray. :-)) :-))

Best way forward with this is simple really....It needs to be split and repaired properly from the inside....Yes by all means sink the nut into the epoxy when doing the repair...the only way to do this and not get the glue on the threads of the nut and bolt is to either plaster the thread with grease or use some sellotape/insulating tape to protect the thread.and outside repair will not hold in sorry to say....repaired a few of these.........As for a decent epoxy to use.....look for some of this

That's the stuff I use on bait boat repairs and haven't had a failure as yet

Hi,

When I saw leaking bsa pocket rocket I thought it was about a motor bike BSA.

They leaked everywhere and were known as '"illigitimate" Stalled Again... {-)

Thanks Dave it was my worry that this might be the case for the repair I'm also pretty sure that when they put of the weed guards they then cover the area with sealant. Tbh nmore I look at the crack it looks like someone has tried to melt the plastic to repair the crack!! I'm local to blue sky the problem  is the arent the fastest in getting things back and the internal build is a bit thrown in. Any tips of splitting and resealing the boat up.

Would it not be possible to drill through the hull and bolt the weed guards on?, they would at least be held on stronger than gluing.

Hi

I think that is one of the problems with the design the weed guards fit flush to the bottom of the boat and then they have used self tapers to screw through into the hull and no doubt a load of silicone gobbed over on the inside of the boat, which is fine and dandy until you take the weed guards off and break the seal. I was thinking of having the bolt araldited/glued whatever in place inside the boat so permanently fixed in place and then have to just screw or unscrew and nut with possibly a locking nut above to stop it coming loose. Hope ive explained that ok  {:-{

That is what I do when I repair them but boat needs to be split to do it,it is the only way to do the job properly.
Easy job to do BUT you need stainless nuts and bolts for the repair as ordinary bolts rust up

Would you say the hull material is ABS plastic on the pocket rocket as after talking to John Foster from Bridlington model boat society yesterday I can see the advantages of making the hull out of fiber glass.
