Title: Black Sails Prequel to Treasure Island
Post by: jaymac on August 25, 2015, 10:13:24 am
Anyone watching  this  whilst apart from VERY strong language some good  Ship bits interesting to see a sniper take out the Helmsman of the opposing ship. Not all CGI and this is the ship built for it

Watched it about 8 months ago. Pile of rubbish. The boats are the only good bits

I watched both series one and series two.
If you remember it is a prequel to Treasure Island and absolute fantasy adventure romp, you should enjoy it. I was worried that they had 'jumped the shark' at the end of season 1, but it came back really strong in season 2. The ship bits were great.

I also re-watched Master and Commander, after going through all of Patrick O'Brian's books (Audio book). Only then did I appreciate the level of detail in the movie, as so much of the series of books was included in the one film.

Noooooooooo the story lines are soooo bad and the acting to be honest is wooden.

Hi.
the film studio where Black Sail is made is here in South Africa just outside Somerset West. When you drive down the highway to Cape Town the ships used for this programme are on a film set along side the highway. there are 1 1/2 ships ( one has the stern cut off ) they are mounted on rollers and slides so that they can be moved in relation to one and other. Several times I have driven past them while they are filming with a big green screen hung up between 2 cranes and a big fan suspended from an other crane blowing air to fill the sails.
When I saw the first episodes I realised how good modern day special effects are! When you see the ships crashing through the waves I had great difficulty in reconciling what I was watching on TV to knowing that it in fact took place along side a local highway.
All the best.

I liked the Patrick O'Brian books as well as the Bolitho series by Alexander Kent.

I think I must be the only one to be bored stiff by the O'Brien books!      Master & Commander film was very good, excellent, in fact.     But as far as I am concerned the books are all but unreadable (to me anyway).

Try the audio books. You can download them using torrents, as some naughty people have pirated them.

But bear in mind no one on this site actually does that kind of thing do they? ;) ;)

I recorded Black Sails, but after watching the first episode erased the lot!      I was over 30 years at sea and never heard so much foul language.     Totally unneccesary.   It could have been a good film, but as far as I am concerned, they ruined it!
As for the life in sail - it was pretty awful!
