Been there, done that - sort of!

I was on a schoolship cruise round the Med in 1964 (£49 for the fortnight). On the way back to Southampton we ran into a force 8 in Biscay and had to heave to for 12 hours with no access to the outside decks. Next morning it was not so bad but still quite lumpy and they let us up onto the foredeck (being steerage class passengers). We quickly discovered that if you grabbed a deckschair, took it up to the bow and waited for a suitable wave to lift the ship you could stand on the back crossbar of the chair and slalom down to the base of the bridge. We had great fun for half an hour until the captain put a stop to it.
