Crikey, we build them big today! That 'Frigate' has to be the same size as a WW2 Light Cruiser.
Top form RN.
-
Yeah, and they have painted this one! :-)
-
Why is the ensign at half mast and black flag?
LB
-
Black Flag,
Duke of Monmouth Black Duke.
The Ships name is also black instead of normal red

You can just about see the Rating at the Ensign Staff - possible the photo was taken just as the Ensign was being raised ?

Ray.

Is it not the Evening Colours at sunset
aye

She is flying the ensign as she rounds up into the
trot at Dartmouth.
Looks like it may be at half mast then but the
angle is poor.
She wouldn't be raising the ensign coming to anchor,
unless the routine is to lower the ensign and raise it
with the Jack as she comes to the buoy.
Need a "idoit" of the said bunting to clarify.
Ned
Idiot being someone who tosses
-
We need "pugwash" to log on here and give us the definitive (ex-yeoman or Chief yeoman, can't remember which).
C'mon Geoff, put us out of our misery :embarrassed: .
Regards,
Ray.
-
I was expecting Geoff to pipe up
We were both on the Juno but at different times.
He left the navy as a Yeoman but if he had stayed
who knows.

oke doke, thanks Ned. It was Ariadne and Penelope for me O0
Regards,
Ray.

Oh dear.
We will be swinging the lamps next {-)
Ok Lamps don't swing on modern ships %%

Also noticed as I was passing a plod shop on the way to Haydock this afternoon that the Union flag was loosely at half mast as well but no obvious reason as to why.
Going back to the Monmoth, was she passing BRNC and if so was she dipping the ensign?
LB
-
She was already secured to a buoy with a line aft.

I never made it to the lofty heights of Yeoman, but here goes...
It's possible that ships were ordered to fly colours at half-mast due to the death or funeral service for a serving member of the RN. Unless it was someone prominent, the circumstances probably wouldn't be made public.

Anybody know when the photos were taken ?
That could give us some ideas....

Ray.

1700 Thurs 27th arrival time in Dartmouth.

Thanks Ned - 1979 Lord Louis Mountbatten killed on the 27th August - guess that's the commemoration.

Ray.
