Well Spike, you have adequate space to build even large models on that size bench if you use your noggin. More importantly, is where you will store your tools, timber, building materials, paints adhesives and all the other stuff we have to accumulate for our hobby. I suggest you can use as many shelves as you can erect, also allowing space for some models. You might have to restrict yourself to smaller models to start with, but will gain experience and learn how to make the most of your restricted space. My bench is 8 feet x 2 feet and I have built and refurbished many large models on it, including a 52" USS Missourri so you can do it! I keep power tools to a minimum and it is surprising what you can do with a good Dremel and attachments.

How do you buy from these guys???

Here is mine, but it isn't as big as it looks. The hull on the desk is sixteen inches long!

We have (in reality she has :} ) a hobby room. I'm allowed this corner of it, the rest is given over to watercolour and other arty stuff. As you can see the space is tiny but usable, storage in plastic boxes underneath. I'm supposed to store everything underneath, clear the bench and put my present build on it each time I finish. It never happens as the ship is longer than the workbench {-)

This is the Linkspan Models HQ for the time being.......
Pic 1 is of the moulding and fittings prep bench with all the casting materials and vacuum pump and chamber to hand...........

Pic 2 is the workbench for the build of the plugs. In addition, all the dusty work of cutting and sanding occurs here..........

And pic 3 is of the 'general' workbench area where other building and detail work is carried out..........

As can be seen, a general tidy up is needed!!!! And those bikes need to be removed......... It will need to be done soon as we are placing an order for a new laser-cutting machine for delivery in October - Christmas will come early!!!! %%
-
And here is possibly the untidiest work shop about (this is after a 2 hour tidy up). The boat is a Robbe "San Diego" being built with twin jet drives (I love a challenge), gulp ok2

Make sure your mancave is insulated and that the planks are not cracked or can in any way allow our little furry friends in to chew your wiring and the like.
-
Well, my man-cave is 8x8 Spike and it's my wee bit of heaven. But I do miss my 8x10 at the last house! As I said before - you cannot have enough shelves! Bob.

I do like the 'if you can't find it look in here' plastic box {-) .... Derek

I have a drawer marked the same :embarrassed:

Is that a euphonium behind the lost bits box?

Now to show the other side of the coin so to speak.
My workspace....in dire need of sorting.
I only retired last year and after catching up with all the jobs that needed catching up on, my wife decided that I needed a new hobby and kindly allowed me to purchase a Vosper Fireboat that had been built back in the early 70's and was in need of a complete makeover, I also have a RTR RNLI Severn in need of a new motor/motors, and a couple of ducks to play with.......
My space is 18' x 8' and needs some real tidying up and sorting before the builds can really start, need to insulate the roof and have a general good clear out.
Equipment in the shed consists of a 10" table saw, 8" chopsaw, hobby bandsaw, small pillar drill, 6" grinder, all the usual electric hand tools, an Axminster M950 wood turning lathe and a Grayson metal turning lathe..............................now all I need is a lot of patience and knowhow.
:-))

Two photos of my workshop. A purpose built insulated structure bought when we moved here as we weren't allowed to convert the integral garage. Still not enough room to store all my models {:-{

OK, hands up all those too embarrassed to show their workspaces. Me, me!!
Oh, alright then, if you insist....

On the right is my steam launch currently in dry dock with engine removed. It is actually sitting on my router table, a tool I use infrequently but is so much better than a hand held router, especially on small sections. On the left is a bandsaw with my home built airboat sitting on the table (weedy ponds no problem now!). On the floor is my Victoria in its stand on its transom, and on the bench is the current project, a Legend Model Boats "Miss Severn". The drill press behind the launch is used mostly with a drum sander and home made table for those sexy curves. The bench at the far end under the cupboards is covered in junk that I cannot bring myself to throw away. ok2
Here's a shot from the other direction - in the distance you can see the Bat 1 land yacht, made famous on this site by Martin's thread. (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,51662.0.html) The BAT is sitting on a pile of wood (which will come in useful one day, honest guv) which itself is sitting on my planer/thicknesser. Another tool rarely used, but when you need it, nothing else will do.

I am going to tidy up soon. Next week. Or maybe the week after. Well, one day, when I fit some more shelves and cupboards. {-) {-) {-)

Hey Tom, let me know if the Blue Star ever comes up for sale... :-)

I was thinking of putting it up for sale now you mention it....

I fear a psychiatrist would have a field day with us lot. Why are so many of us apparently incapable of keeping a neat, clean bench? I know, what we want is always to hand (really?? %) ) but I admit to a deep envy and admiration for those whose workshops look like they could host open heart surgery or assemble the next Mars probe. I will be like that one day...... O0 O0
No, of course I won't. Who am I kidding ? {-) {-) {-)
I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with ..... BAT1 !!
Ah, yes, hidden away in the back there. I did give your thread a plug in my text (perhaps you only look at the pictures? %) ). Time to get the dust blown off I think!

I do like the 'if you can't find it look in here' plastic box {-) .... Derek
And it works! O0
-
Is that a euphonium behind the lost bits box?
HAHA! :} Actually, it's an old wok!
-
I'm embarrassed to say that this space is 35 feet x 12 feet, and there isn't a square foot of empty, flat space. Things are out of hand and I really need to clean up and throw out.
At the far end is a metal lathe and on the left there are two milling machines and a tool box. Shelves full of "important stuff". On the right is a 12 foot long bench, a metal cutting bandsaw, a Sherline lathe, a small belt/disk sander, and more junk.
Going the other way is another 8 feet of bench, a trawler in progress, a tug boat in progress, and parts for three miniature horse drawn wagons. The shelf on the very rear left has printed out plans for nearly forty small stationary and steam engines as well as a set of paddles for a Duchess of Fife, a steam winch for another project, and others I have long forgotten.
I really do need to do something with this mess.
Tom
-
Your workshop looks quite ordered Tom. I mean, I can see lots of floor, the lathe and mills look like you have cleaned the swarf from the beds etc sometime this decade and your storage looks like it is used rather than emptied and left just so to keep them tidy and free of stuff:O) After all, flat surfaces are for keeping stuff on, not cupboards!
-
I cannot get in my building sheds. They are rammed with boats. And I'm attempting to get in the loft to build. ....but I filled that up with more boats.
-
hi
been looking at all you man caves and all the built in health and safety features
I'm very lucky
i don't know how to put photos on the forum
great photos
ills se if I can tidy mine up to your very high standards
regards deepstar
-
I build most of my stuff at work during the lunch hour and after hours. It has the big advantage that someone else sweeps up afterwards.
-
Wow...... :-))
-
Double wow ... and the choice of many machines as well.
-
That is some workshop %% ,I have just insulated my one and replaced some units now the fun part putting it all back in {:-{
-
It's a great workshop, I just wish I had the room at home to work on bigger projects.
-
Cripes, all that flat space to put stuff on! Are you going to use ab area of your worktop as a fixed build board? I could see issues with needing to move the build on occasion, and planning ahead to minimise disruption to planking etc, but it is a large enough area to work around. Lovely space Tug Nut.
-
Thanks all most of the space is filled now,the building work is done in the other end :-)) ,now to start on that.
