Title: Heller 1/8 Citroen Traction Avant
Post by: kpnuts on September 06, 2015, 01:24:41 pm
Hi all some of you may know I sold a couple of my ships builds so I had 400 quid burning a hole in my pocket, so I've ordered this and Roy fitszimmonds cd to build it with, my plan (as I'm sure by now you all know I don't build normal builds) is to have it languishing in an old barn or in a garden or yard with maybe a tree growing out of it.

That's a nice looking kit.

I have a 1:8 E-Type to build one day

Hi all well it arrived today and it is mahoosive
(http://i.imgur.com/xUd6LdL.jpg)
that is a 1/12 kit box on top of it
just to give you an idea of its size

these are the sprues there are 3 or 4 sprues to each bag just for comparison (the rule devides the too model kits) the camaro has 1 sprue to each bag apart from the black sprues and that has 2 sprues

one tip I've already learned do not take the sprues out of the box as you wont get the all back in and shut the lid (unless you have a degree in astrophysics) that is, this is one case where the box is not big enough.

Sounds like a winner to me  O0

How about a Free French resistance group`s vehicle in a barn getting ready for a raid against the Nazi occupiers.  Cross of Loraine boldly painted on doors, a tricolour on front wing, some weaponry, Molotov cocktails etc etc.

Going on from arrows suggestion forces of valor do some good 1/8 figures

Gosh I feel like doing one myself  !    Crate of wine bottles full of jellified petrol and paper wicks in the open boot, a bag of horse manure with spikes hidden in it, some hand grenades couple of Sten guns parachuted in from a black Lysander.  The list goes on ....wheres my beret !

Essex 2univesal this kit has a part count in excess of 600. I like arrows idea but can't find the figures you mention, just keep getting sent to ami ami Web site with no info on 1/8 figures other than a 1/8 ami figure.

My apologies..... braincells not retaining correct information.
The company is Dragon models and they are 1/6 scale  :embarrassed:

Hi Ken,

Sorry if you are fully aware already, but Hobbycraft do a range of large trees that would give you a sound basis for your arborial interloper.

Thanks mate but going with the French resistance idea just have to set it without people or have them painted in the background. I used to be okay at people.

Used to be a freehand (didn't use stencils) tattoo artist so every tatt was individual and unique, had to give up as it's bad for the eyes. You have to concentrate on what you're doing filling in colours in tiny little circles, you see a patchy tatt, that was done by someone not filling in properly.

Hi all well I've made a start on this mammoth build (and thats without putting it in a dio) tbh once I looked at the instructions, without Roy Fitzimmonds aka roymattblack dvd I would have closed the box and put it away again.
I've read loads of reviews on this and they've all said the engine is badly warped and had to use some reinforcing or some such to make it square, I recon I've been lucky as mine has been a perfect fit (so far) I've even taken pics inside so you can see I've used no tabs or reinforcments ats all (I just hope this continues for the rest of the kit.

That is one big bounder of an engine Ken. I too have heard that this can be a terrible fit, looks you have been very lucky. Fingers crossed that the rest of the build goes as smoothly.

There's over 1100 parts to this kit, the detail would rival a pocher kit, and apparently it's a very accurate kit, one of the many drawbacks though is no English instructions and what instructions there are, are very confusing (thank god for roys dvd(incidentally for those who don't know who roy is he scratch builds amazing 1/8 cars (I mean the whole thing body, engine, chassis, the whole thing) another thing which makes it harder is no locating pins, so it's difficult to know if you have things lined up right (another good reason for roys dvd)

Hi all been working on the engine, this kit is awesome, the engine alone has more parts than the whole Shelby kit, just as an example that little nut is a separate part I've put the tin of humbrol paint there as a refrence I had to use my PE pencil to place it, thank god I got Roy's dvd the instruction are so vague (there's a little do hicky lever sticks out the side its only about 3mmx2x2 and from the instructions I had no idea which way up to put it)
I've primed it and now I can see a few bits if filling I've missed.

Brilliant is a pale word to describe this.

A quick google (ooh er missus) will get you images that you can print off. The real one (sans boobies) and the one in Allo allo are quite simiar enough in 1:8th so you could adapt the real one to look like the comedy one:O)

Hi all well the engine is done (well as much as I can do without putting it in the car)
The next bit is the front chassis and suspension (to be honest I keep looking at the instructions and I'm tempted to box it back up and put it away) looks to be way beyond my meagre abilities, I would start somewhere else on the model and come back to this part but that may cause problems later on I've no idea whether I can start the body without causing problems with the chassis, I will see how brave I'm feeling, this may be as far as this kit goes for me, really not feeling confident at all on the next bit.

Hi all well here's tonight's bit, that steering rack was a real pain the ball joints are supposed to push through and be an interferance fit but I had us a dremell tool by hand to gradually open it up enough to get the ball joint through without it just falling back out again, very sloooow gentle work with lots of checking to make sure the ball joint didn't just fall through. got to paint it and weather it now, would have painted it first but it is a tight fit and wasn't sure it would slide through the shaft after it was painted will now use very thinned down paint and hopefully if I keep moving it as the paint dries it will remain working.

Hi all well this steering rack has driven me to hurling this against the wall, I've re-glued it on no less than a dozen times only for it to come off almost as soon as I turn it over, fingers crossed its on for good now, tried a test fit of the engine (I have to say it fitted before, but someone stood on one of the engine mounts (my fault I shouldnt have left it on the floor)when I took it off to do the breaks and clutch pedal linkages) now the engine dosnt lign up on that one so it will have to come off and see whats wrong with it.

Have been following this thread since day 1 Ken.......it is becoming more lifelike each day :-))

However ....2 points

a. I don't think Andre' Gustave knew about the idea to place the battery in the lowest possible place .....[for better balance & just to keep our purists %) happy]
b. I wonder why early European motor vehicles were 6 Volt by design, however some years later most changed to 12 Volt?

Hi all well the body (the majority of it anyway is glued together) I cant recommend Roy's cd enough, I've referenced it often but here it is invaluable he shows you how to assemble the body as a separate part which will save a lot of hard work later on also if following his instructions the finished body is very tough.

there is however one very big problem with my model, which I don't know how I will get round  I couldn't resist trying the bonnet on and the air box is too high lifting the bonnet, that is going to be a real pain, not sure whats happening to be honest, I know I had it (the airbox ) in the wrong place originally but its where it should be now, the engine sits on the engine mount properly?

I would have thought that the thickness of the bonnet would be no thicker than it and its ribs in real life, so cannot think of an easy answer.

Leaving the bonnet off would be the 'get out of jail' option, but other than that you are looking at repositioning the engine or doing something surgical to the air cleaner and thinning the bonnet down drastically at the point it contacts the air cleaner.

Hm, thorny.

Could you not have the bonnet up,
with a mechanic or exasperated owner
bent over looking in head scratching?

Just a thought.

Hi all well I've sorted the air intake problem and started filling and sanding the rear of the car, I would like to prime it so I can see what further filling and sanding will be needed but till Citroen France get back to me with either the colour code or the paint itself, I've no idea what primer to use, I don't want to prime it then have it all react with the top coat.
you do get several versions with this kit and I think the hatchback is one of them but I'm not doing that one.

Hi all well I've added the rubber piping that goes between the wings and the body and I've started the front seats (see if this works before I do the rear ones) I'm going to try the marbelling effect I used on the Kwak Z1 a while ago only not going to have so much of it, so this is just the base colour which would show through from the cracked vynle (how do you spell vynel vynal ????)

A little of track  ;)....but answers your question

Once worked with a British University graduate in Mechanical engineering.....he did his training with the BLMC

His claim to fame was that he was on the team that developed imitation stitching in the vinyl seat coverings for the Morris series of vehicles  >>:-( ...[yes the 1800, 1100 & a few hybrid variations on a theme]

I suggested to him that this was probably why all BLMC cars were such a huge success  {-)....... Derek

Hi all well I bought some halfords plastic filler/primer and some halfords plastic primer and here is the result of the first coat of filler primer, I must say I am well chuffed with the first coat (I thought it would reveal a horrendous filling job which required loads of work) I will admit it has shown some areas which need attention, but the piping (I think anyway) looks just about right. I also did the first coat on the seats, which I'm also quite pleased with, yes it needs another coat but (I think anyway) its looking promising.

You out do yourself on every page of this build Ken. You must be chuffed that only a small amount of extra filling was required given the many inches you had to fill initially, and the beading is pretty fab.

If the corrosion inside is anything to go by, the exterior will be a basket case!

Use the techniques you are happy with Ken as it is your model. I have seen quite granular looking paint surface where rust has bubbled underneath.

Hi all well after a disasterous reaction on the paintwork on this I've sorted it (will never be a great job but is ok as an old jalopy) did a bit more staining of the doors and the bodywork and added some rust effects to the black paintwork, still a long way to go on it but is starting to look better now.

Title: Re: Heller 1/8 Citroen Traction Avant
Post by: derekwarner on November 29, 2015, 08:46:19 pm
Absolutely true to life rust & locations Ken :-))...yes the location of the rust is of critical importance

I think the French when designing in pre-CAD days [as all other manufacturers] used clay models.....however they still designed pockets or voids in doors & other panels that self sealed when painted.......so any moisture from a FROG mist was trapped in that void

My dear little R12 [as previously stated] was advertised as being painted by 'electrophori'sesis' or something like that with electrically charged paint........ well I think my R12 must have been painted in a Friday afternoon shift when the batteries were flat :o

To answer Ian's question........yes the vehicle did smell [a little fishie] for a few weeks especially in the hot OZ summer......that is probably why a great congregation of cats seemed to be forever licking the tyres.... {-) ...... Derek

Hi all I was checking some of the pictures, one advantage of that is looking at pictures of things 2 and sometimes 3 times bigger than the actual thing you see faults you wouldnt see on the actual item, like for instance a lot of the flat areas of rust are, just that flat, no blistering and no reason to be rust coloured, so I,ve fixed that and dulled the doors and bodywork down and started blending panels and adding general grime (I must say I'm quite pleased with the results so far) if things carry on like this I think the finished thing will look quite realistic (of course having said that I will no probably go and ruin it)

Likewise, as I have no telly (not that there is that much of interest on there anyway) this is my entertainment watching interesting models being well built and finished.

I find it difficult to say anything productive after a while, so I do not reply to every photopost. (Phew say some!!!!!) I beleive in constructive critique that is meant to help and progress work, but it is difficult for effects especially as the environment can have a random effect on weathering and decay, and do not mention military modellers debates on Olive Drab!

Looking at the last picture in reply #93 evoked a strong memory of, believe it or not, a smell.
Years ago there was an abandoned Austin 7 up on a hill top in a somewhat worse condition. And there was that smell of an old rotting car. A very distinctive smell, but not unpleasant. My brother and I rummaged through the glove box and found an empty Navy Cut packet for 5 cigarettes. Windows were broken, and the rain and weather had pretty much done for the leather. Hence the smell.
Just a memory, and almost forgot, until I saw the picture.

I reckon it is pretty good Ken!

Given the randomness of wether a bird is pooping as it passes or has decided that your car is the worst threat ever and needs aimed bombardment and what it has had for lunch it can be a variety of shapes, colours and sizes.

As birds (and for that matter Platypus and Echidnas) don't wee, their fecaes can have a grey/brown/green middle with white element which is the urea deposit that we mammals would pee.

It can be more solid or jelly like, but unless you are going to make a lifetimes study on the subject, or are going to exhibit at a convention of bird poo experts then fret not:OD

Seems like you have done some exhaustive research on the subject, me I just looked out the window and at our car, of course one thing I have noticed is size of poo and size of bird seem to have no relation I've seen blue "boobs" poop on our car and the poop looked bigger than the bird it came out of.

Hi Ken,

I hope this is of use to you. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=citroen+traction+avant&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjbhLT1y8XJAhVBshQKHcruA4gQ_AUIBygB&biw=1440&bih=763#tbm=isch&q=citroen+traction+avant+dashboard

The choices are numerous, but there is a black dash like yours amongst them.

Your progress is looking excellent by the way.

Hi all well this is going to be left for a while to let me cool off (I came sooooo close to throwing it against the wall) went to fit the wings and complete radiator as you saw I did in the last update and with those in place tried a fit of the bonnet (no chance 6 mill gap at the front, or back depending on where you want the gap) after several minuets of scratching my head I figured out what the problem was there was a gap all around the top of the firewall of about 2 mill, lift the front of the car a bit gap disappears and the bonnet fits perfect (I think the floor pan is bent) (I know the back part is but thought I would sort that when I finally glued it on) so lifted the front of the car glued the firewall to the body let it dry, released the body and the bottom of the firewall came away from where that was glued (too much stress I guess ) after a very fidely application of glue to that area, mahoosive amounts of taping to hold it there, let that dry undo the tape all fits perfect, just start applauding myself for sorting it and ping gap at the top again. How I stopped myself I don't know, but I didn't throw it, I don't want to come that close again so having a break for a little while.

Don't throw it against the wall Ken, if it comes to the worst you could always finish it with the bend built in and make the diorama a French scrapyard, run by René Artois of course.  %%

Hi all well I've figured it out, On the ladder frames which you slide the subframe on the sub frame was about a mill away from end of the ladders which through everything else out unfortunately that part was stuck with a capitol S but with a lot of jiggeling I've moved it the mill required so now back to work, I've added the inner roof lining and weathered it.

for some reason the weathering is not showing up in the pics very well, trust me it looks very grubby.

I think you have done the right thing adding a brown tinge to the lining as I expect the driver was a smoker!

I am trying to think of things/reasons that would cause dents in the bonnet. One I can think of is more a paint blemish where someone put something on the bonnet that scratched the paintwork, or worse still rusted and left rust streaks, like an old oil can or similar. Rust on a dark colour seems to impart an oil like rainbow hue, which can be interesting, but how to recreate it accurately is another matter.

If you made it look like a barn find, then perhaps dust and other farm like debris might affect the bonnet. Maybe, represented as a neglected vehicle left outside, mildew and moss like what grows in your car window rubbers?

I`d rather see it as a still running but neglected example, war  restrictions, lack of repairs, spares and maintenance and so on. An empty wine bottle,  a paper flower, a pair of...ooh la la.  My imagination nearly ran away there :embarrassed:   Edith Piaf belting out from the radio.   Depending on the date perhaps a Sten gun under the seat.   ..._   ..._   A few fag ends on the floor, half of them with lipstick on them  :} ah I remember it well ;)

Know what Ken let ordinary modellers build shiny classic cars as you don't come into that category keep doing it your way, just about anyone can put a kit together, it takes skill to make it so lifelike you have to look twice at a photo to see it's a model,  :-)) :-))

Hi all I've pretty much had it with car kits, Ive been told I'm ruining a classic kit, feeling pretty deflated now, I thought this was some of the best work I had done. will stick to ships in the future.
Not so.  There will be thousands of this kit built as a shiny new car, your version is unique.  Keep going please.

Sorry mate they know sod all! As others say anyone can stick a kit together and make it shine, but people like you and also Eddiesolo bring them to life! that is a talent not many have

Ask the one who claims you're ruining it to post up some of their work. I'll bet my collection of Models they aren't a patch on yours!

Frankly Ken, if the nay syers haven't got any better to do than carp then you are best off leaving that forum as there is critique and there is just negative drivvel.

Whats more challenging? Varnishing your seventieth concours car with the same air brush and lacquer that you used on the previous sixtynine, or developing and experimenting continuously with weathering and distressing techniques and trying new materials out?

You bloomin well make what you want Ken and ignore them. I sincerely hope that it isn't jealousy of your skills on their part.

Rene looks pretty good to me! For building techniques, have a look at  Emmanuel Nouallier's work and articles in Mil mod (Have a google as well). They will blow you away.

Kpnuts, you are definitely on the right track with your modelling choice, whether or not to weather. :-))
I was taken to the Cologne model railway exhibition/show about 30 years ago.
ALL of the model dioramas had weathered models, and drew big crowds. Of all the stand alone models, the weathered models drew the most attention and were painfully examined as people admired the detail. Most of the train models were weathered.

The pristine models only drew passing attention, except for some of the exceptionally large manufacturers displays.

ken, the weapon you have is an MG34 machinegun. It was the first multi role machinegun that could be used as a squad weapon, medium machine gun fitted to a  tripod for area denial and suppression roles. It was also used as a vehicle close protection and ranging weapon mounted in armoured cars and tanks. It was belt fed from a belt or a variety of magazines including saddle and side drum types.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MG_34

http://www.terapeak.com/worth/ww2-german-mg-steel-ammo-box/171043830600/

The ammo boxes were usually painted German grey which is a panzer grey colour. I beleive that once the Wehrmacht were committed to North Africa, a proportion were painted sand.

That is a good way to represent cracked render. It gives you that sandy cement texture as well without needing to buy/make glop to create it.

Your efforts and images would make good magazine articles Ken. Is it worth collating the text and images into one for submission to a suitable publication? They might pay you something for it!

I look forward to see the finished work soon :} :-))

Hi not sure what you mean by collating, or even if anyone outside modeling would be interested in it. I must say the final piece will probably be a surprise (even to those who have followed this build)I must say (dispite some views) I still think this is one of my best efforts, I have tried several new techniques and invented a few new ones. Not sure what my next project will be (still waiting for the hull on the Soliel Royal ) I have 3 which are tempting me the Mefistofeles the double decker bus or the VW Sambu bus.

Hi all been going through some of my old builds and I still think this is one of my best, if not the best (even over the French galley the la reale) I can't believe I've built 162 kits in the 5 yrs since I got back into plastic kits (and some of them have been huge ( the 1/4 Ducati to say the least) and the big ships) 162 is a conservative estimate as that's what I still have, I've sold some and binned some as well it's probably up near 200 in reality.
I would just like to say thanks for watching as I've gone along.
If I'd stuck to sctatch building ships that number would be nearer 4 yes that's right I would have scratch built 4 ships in the same time, can you tell why I like plastic kits.

It certainly ranks with your best works Ken. Many if your car projects are pleasing especially the one with the dragons etc. You gave yourself a going over about that one which I think was wrong. Most people would be happy getting a smooth flawless finish in one colour, let alone adding loads of hand painted panels.

What ever you do, have fun, don't worry as you usually get it just right, and don't lose too many bits to the carpet monster!
