Don't be in the firing line!
Can anyone identify this object?
-
No? well what about this view, doing the job its supposed to be doing?
-
Its a 'J' grapnel, for recovering lost anchors or other items from the seabed. This one snapped under the enormous strain of pulling aboard the anchor and half a kilometre of chain. You do not want to be in the way of something like that, the inertial forces must be astronomic.
And lastly here's a view of one on the deck to show just how big these things are compared to that tiny bloke behind it! The anchors weigh up to 35 tonnes and the J grapnel can be 5 tonnes.

They can't be that strong, that one's wrapped in tissue paper! :P

That's the one they use for playing
Pin the tail on the Donkeyman

Both the webpage and the facebook page for that group is an inspiration to me Umi, they turn out such unbelievably good models.
Here's the anchor milled from 1mm copper sheet.
This pre-empts another post I was going to start tomorrow!
