Title: Compass Rose
Post by: TheOldMan on October 23, 2015, 05:44:29 pm
As some of you may know I have added bits in Dan Lords thread of his Flower Class corvette , of which I stated mine had done a nose dive off the work mate just as I had sprayed it. This caused some confusion with Dan's , So I am starting this new thread. Here is the split on the bow. this can be repaired and I shall post more pics of the build as I go along. Hope you get to see this Dan its a weak spot and should be reinforced. >>:-(

Right, sorry for the delay, I have been waiting for parts to arrive from the UK as we don't have anything in Cyprus ie ( model shops )  This is how far I have got after the repair work. The deck and upper works are not fix on yet , just placed on for pics. The wood decking is the stick on wood that comes with the kit, it is all one piece that covers all the deck, but I cut the wood part out and scored the deck to make the plated parts. Still deciding if I should varnish the wood parts?.

Now this is how far I have got with the R/C, The large lead weight in the middle is one I found in our local fishing shop. As I wont be using a sealed battery this has added the weight. It would have cost more in postage to send a battery out than the cost of buying it. I have made two supports for the deck and magnets will be fitted on these so the deck can be lifted off, Next to the weight is the smoke maker, that came from Australia. The battery's will be housed in front of this, and the esc and receiver will go on a flat piece of plastic over the top of the weight. That's it so far. Still waiting on parts from Hong Kong and the UK. Can you believe the liquid glue I want has to come from the UK its cheaper with the postage than get it in Cyprus >>:-( Your views are welcome.

Including some real scale copper plumbing as well. She's looking fab.

As to postage etc, I have hheard this fom customers of mine saying the cost of selling and shipping models to the USA is often cheaper than an agent sending it interstate!

Looking really nice Chris  :-))  I see what you mean regarding the crack  {:-{  I'm sure it'll fix ok though. I put some plastic metal at the front of mine, just to be safe you know  ;D
I like you scoring on the decks looks great, I didn't get any wood with mine, it's all moulded on the decks obviously a design fault from the beginning, I reckon I'll just paint mine grey & brown where needed.
Nice smoke unit btw, I've just got one from Graupner small unit but I've had one on my Calypso & it works pretty well  :-))
I've made a start on the funnel section & hope to do a bit  more on Sunday if it rains ( hopefully )  {-)
Keep up the good work Dan.

Thanks all for your kind remarks,  Dan if you want to get rid of the wood grain effect I found It was very easy to scrape off with a large blade model knife and it didn't take long, if you want to score the plate lines I can send you a copy of the deck measurements plan I got with the kit and you can scale it to your deck.

Well an update, things have been going slow at the usual pace 2 steps forward 1 back. I have sealed up the hole in the hull where the anchor is so water cant get in, I shall glue the anchor in place minus the shaft ?. Also the front deck where the chain go's in at the winch and forward holes are sealed as well. see pic and yes the U shaped vent is in the wrong place, :embarrassed:  now been corrected, Tried to do some work on the R/C part, I had a Viper marine ESC it was secondhand and when I wired it all up to try it all out, it got very hot and solder and smoke came out of it, and yes I did double check the wiring was OK, must be a faulty one, I did put it in the Vosper but the reverse didn't work so I took it out, very glad I did O0   I now have to wait for a new one to arrive from the UK.  <:( . That's it for now.

Looking good Chris  :-))  I fitted the anchors complete & filled any gap from the inside with that plastic metal stuff, totally sealed it so pleased there  :embarrassed:

After a long period a new up date, I have now moved on, although I have had problems with my esc, whilst waiting for a new one I decided to crack on with the bridge work, gun turret and gun. the gun has a new brass barrel and the turret has the PE parts that come with the kit. at the time I was waiting for the new brass stanchions.
The bridge work has had a few problems but i'm pleased with the results so far. I now feel I am getting some where. tried the hull out on the pool and although she needs more ballast goes very well ( only forward ). Hope you like the pics, any comments welcome.

A copy of 'The Cruel Sea' will give you loads of  finishing detail. This film is a WW2 classic and captures the harsh reality of life aboard a Flower Class escorting Atlantic convoys.

Thank you for your comments,  Perkasaman I have a copy of the Cruel Sea and I do get some idears from it, but the corvette used in the film is a very late ship modified by the Greek navy,  I have noticed alot of differences.

This is my last update for this year O0  Things have moved on slowly as I have been waiting for parts again. You may be wondering why I have done such a long run with the rudder servo, its because I only had the one servo which is very deep and it was the only place it would fit, I have put in 2 rods to compensate for it, it works very well.
Done more work on the bridge and other parts. The oerlikon's were in the kit, they comprised of a brass barrel and the rest PE , very fidley  %%   I have done a bit more work to the hedgehog as it looked to bland. And on some of the structure I have used the PE rails as well as the stanchion & wire ones. All the electrics are now done and working :-)) . Hope you like the pics and I welcome all comments.

Keep up the good work Dan.

Dan just added these pics of the hedgehog, as you can see all I done was lengthened the carrier with the kit top cut down then added another piece and made a new reflector with struts, made two small boxes to go on the back, piece of telephone wire to represent the electric wiring. they look better on the model than in the pic.

Just an update, Compass Rose has her sea ( pool ) test to get her ballast right. She looked and went well, just a few mods and to finish the rest of her.
Still quite a bit to do but she looked lovely on the water. 8)                                                                                                                                                                                Chris

Hi Chris

Absolutely stunning build, perhaps the best build of the old matchbox kit I've seen for a long time.
Beautiful work. :-))

Super finish, I am after a break of some thirty years building the Revell kit but as the LE' Mave just in case I get the detail wrong  I can alway state "well in the Irish Navy 1953 refit she was remodled"

For thoughs of you that have been following this thread I must apologise for the delay in the updates, I have been ill and not done any work on her.
I have now started to get on with her and will put some more pictures on here.  One of the things I will be doing is changing my radio set up. I was on
Acoms 2.7 which for what I was going to do was OK, but I have found out that the fishing boats go on that and it used to cause a bermuda triangle problem with the RC aircraft boys so like them I am now switching over to 2.4 , found a nice set up on Hobbyking.  That is now on order and I wait for that. Mean while I can finnish the rear part of the ship. Hope to keep this going for you, as I have found alot of threads start but don't finnish.
Chris

Right update with pics. I have decided to put some camo on her, as I am not doing a particular ship I have done my own interpretation, As I am sure there was a lot of colours and patterns. You will notice I have uprated the Pom Pom and the Lewis guns on the rear deck they are a mixture of Great little ships, the PE that came with the ship and a bit of scratch work. Still more to come and will sort the RC out when it comes. Mean while I hope you enjoy the Pics and I look forward to your comments.

Stunning work Chris, love the camo & the pom poms etc, wouldn't want to be the aft Lewis gunner though  :((  might get your head blown off by the chap behind if he gets to engrossed in what he's doing  %%
Lovely work though, must get mine done soon for the summer so I can get her wet !!!!
Keep up the good work Dan.
Ps the stanchions & railings are nice to work with arn't they  O0  if a little fiddly  %%

I wish all those years ago I had made such a good version from a Christmas present but alas I was too in-experienced in the art of model making at the time and spoilt it.

Well here we go again, I do apologise  for the long delay.( illness and other things ). I have been doing little bits now and again and she is starting to look better, I still have a lot more things to do on the detailing and of course she needs a crew.
As with a lot of things that I have done to her its better to see the pics than a lot of chat, if you have any comments I will be pleased to receive them. I have split the thread in two, first on dry land ( table ) and the second in the testing tank ( pool ).
