Last night after an All Hallows service I invited a lady friend from church back to my flat for a little something to eat.
We had, what I have always known to be Cottage Pie. Minced beef with onions and carrots simmered with a beef stock cube until the water content had been reduced. And then topped with mashed cream potatoes, and put in the oven to crisp the potatoes on the top.
She ate the meal and then remarked that it was a lovely Shepherds Pie.
I pointed out to her that it was a Cottage pie because it had beef as the meat, not lamb as I had always believed to be the case in Shepherds pie.
Oh ! it's always been called shepherds pie up here in Lancashire she retorted.
Very soon after that she bad her farewells and left.
I feel in a quandary now as I have always known the dish as cottage pie, and feel silly for arguing.
What is it known as in your part of the world, and is there any difference to note by.

Shepherds watched over sheep and so used lamb, or mutton to make shepherds pie.
I have no idea why cowherds used cottages in their pies.

Looks as if that is another one similar to the Turnips and or Swedes question, oh never mind sprinkle some cheese on it and call it Cumberland pie. And I bet that will bring out a few but I thoughts.

mind I have always known it as Shepherd's pie and I always thought cottage pie had boiled sliced potato over the top and then put in the oven to brown...
no matter who was right or wrong I bet the meal was lovely and now I am starving just thinking about it :-)
I am off to google pies etc. :-)
Having second thoughts now - you should have just given her bangers and mash or said the chippy opens at 6 o'clock :-)

My Grandfather was Mr Sheppard...as distinct from a shepherd %) [he was actually the County Clerk of the Bulli District 60 years ago]
So must agree with kinmel ...'whilst shepherds watched their flocks by night O0 .......anyway, Nana made shepherds pie with lamb mince ;)

We must remember that 'shep' is a Hebrew abbreviation of sheep, and 'herd' of 'flock' is of the same Hebrew meaning and origin.....
Considering the interchangeability of the latter two words...we could be eating Shepflock pie, that was baked in a cottage {-)........ Derek

Another theory is that one was made with raw meat and t'other with left-over cooked meat, but which was which...
Similarly, scorn was poured on my statement when having supper with friends a few nights ago that corned beef hash had mash on top. Not in Lancashire, it hasn't. Actually, there seem to be three forms as the New York dish is actually like a crisply fried bubble and squeak with corned beef included.

Mrs M #1 (the American one) once tried to cook a Cottage Pie. Not a bad attempt - it tasted mostly like bricks and wallpaper. I'm only glad she never tried a Shepherd's Pie... :o
We would have been married for 40 years tomorrow... thank goodness for Mrs M #2!

Oldest son(7) to youngest daughter(4) "its made with real shepherds....." *points to a piece of onion* "there's a toenail!"
Funnily enough tho they still ask me to make it

Shepherds pie made with lamb mince. Cottage pie made with beef mince, both topped with mashed potato. Other contents to suit whatever is in the house, sometimes baked beans, sometimes peas, sometimes carrots.
That is what I grew up with and I am happy to carry on the tradition.

Definetly with cheese and served with cauliflower cheese with lashings of Worcestershire sauce and chop sauce

That's very kind of you. I somehow don't think I'll have time to get away from the stand for one of their legendary pies though. Next year it will be different... 8)

Come on lads , the clue is in the name Shepherd = Sheep , the debate cane be opened up its it best to use mince or small diced meat it's mince in our house because it's cheeper , no cheese ,mash spread with a fork so the spuds go brown and crisp .
Stories is a national dish in Aberdeenshire , and that's a black art a bit like electronics on second thoughts electronics are simpler ,to be eaten with beetroot and oat cakes ,that's the Stovies not the electronics .

'Stovies' may be found throughout Scotland - not just Aberdeenshire - in umpteen guises. Ask any dozen people how to make stovies and you'll get a dozen different recipes. My preference is for the corned beef variety, topped with potato, cheese and tomatoes but others will use link sausages, roast beef leftovers or beef mince.

We always called any dish done in the oven with mashed potatoes Shepard's pie. The meat in it depended on what was available. In the city usually ground beef or pork which ever was on hand or cheaper. Now in hunting season it could get interesting, my faverate was venison.

Down here in Silly Sussex we refer to shepherds as 'lookerers'...my great grandfather was a lookerer, he lived out in the middle of Pevensey Marsh in a tiny house called 'Lookerers Cottage'. The cottage was on a rather nasty bend, named...yep, you got it...'Lookerers Corner', and still referred to by that name.

No. My line has always been that Iain and Natasha only dig me up to do the shows then they put me back in my box. This year will be final; no more Groundhog Days after next Sunday... Yippee!! :P
