We were watching TV this evening around 11pm when a computer-type dialog box came up on the screen saying that the set would be switched off in five minutes to conserve power. I just ignored it. Four minutes later a similar box appeared saying that it would power-down in one minute and to press any button to cancel. I did, but perhaps not in time, for the TV set did actually power off.
My questions are:
1. Was it just in this household?
2) Who or what agency was responsible?
3) Why?
4) How?
Immediately after it had happened I switched the thing back on and it behaved quite normally. No other devices in the house were affected.
NB I had not been drinking excessively - Liz saw it too, and she is practically teetotal!

Just your telly Dave. Many modern sets wil do this if there has not been a command input for an extended period. You should be able to specify the length of the period by selecting menu and then settings.
Lesson - don't doze off in front of your TV.

LG and Sony TVs Do this
You can change the timing/switch it off in the menu settings
The Sky+ HD box does it as well
-
Actually I find it happens to me as well, particularly after Sunday lunch but there is rarely any warning except for the paper falling from my nerveless grasp and spreading itself over the floor. :}
-
Mine (Samsung) does a sort of half-assed version of this - it blanks the screen to black but it leaves the LCD backlights on. You don't notice in daytime but it is obvious in the dark.
Can't believe it saves any power in this mode at all.
It also has a timer that switches it into proper standby.
-
to cancel the shut down.. :-) go to your menu in settings on the tv ..it is just a safety thing all tvs have it nowadays
-
Thanks, guys. Strange it should only start happening four years after we bought the set. There was nothing untypical about the evening's viewing last night i.e. the TV had been on no longer than usual. Perhaps "they" have updated the software? I certainly haven't changed any settings, but I shall go and have a look at them this evening and re-set that time if necessary.

Its a facility Dave, probably gets a mention in the instruction book....but possibly doesn't. It either allows you to doze on peacefully or the sudden lack of background noise wakes you up. This saves energy by causing you to turn lights off on your way as you retire for the night.

dave watch out for all the 1982 film joke you're going to get now, ;) ;)

Wonder if it's the FREEVIEW box ?
My 'SMART' ? TV started doing this too when I installed a new one a while back . . . .
It's most annoying these days , you'll get " a new channel has been found" hit OK to aknowledge . . . WHO CARES ? it'll probably be a selling channel anyway . . .

It's a 55" Panasonic set. The instructions don't tell you how to switch the set off from Standby and I can't find any manual On/Off switch except the one on the mains socket. Strange, as our little 19" Panasonic in the kitchen has an On/Off switch right in the middle of the top edge. It's these inscrutable...Welsh??

1982 film jokes? That one went straight over the top, so please feel free to show me up as being thick again!
I-S
Freeview is built in, but that message does appear regularly. With the HDD/DVD/VHS recorder it appears every single time you turn the damned thing on (and even when you've just finished updating it!), but if you ignore it all the time then there comes a time when you can't set a program to record until you've updated the channels etc.
The lunatics electronics really are taking over the asylum.

Probably true Dave, but in the background it is smirking at you because you have said it is a 55 incher and it knows, despite what people say, that size really DOES matter.

Sky also does this, and every time they update the box they turn it back on so we have to find it again and turn it off.
-
Don't believe any of them Dave, it's ALIENS! O0 O0 O0 [/size] They've taken over the world and only a very few of us have survived the mind absorption that has affected the rest.

What were you watching when it shut down maybe your tv doesn't like your choice of programme %%
Seriously mine did that when I got a new sky box and had to change the settings

Dave: Both our LG television and SKY box have this function built in, supposed to be 'energy saving'. Happens at least once an evening if you don't key in any inputs for some time.
Our 4 year old grandson has become quite adapt at spotting the message, picking up the right remote, and pressing the correct button sequence to dismiss the relevant prompt window.
Too technical for oldies like me O0
-
look for the menu button on the remote, then go through the endless number of options, especially when there is nothing on tv to watch - oo000 - during x crapter

The plot is now as thick as I am. I checked the power saving settings last night, and they are off.
I know when I'm beaten.

Oh NO way a member called GHOST would DARE get inside Dave's Telly.....maybe an exorcism of the telly would help
Dave

a big hammer would turn off the TV permanently- leaving more time to make models :-)
