Title: Dutch sidetrawler KW49, Antje 1959 (static)
Post by: kees de mol on November 09, 2015, 11:47:12 pm
Hi all,
This is a ship I finished last summer.

When I went looking for a new ship to build, I got a picture from my grandfather who looked through the window of a ship's bridge in his younger years. Unfortunately my grandfather deceased at a very young age. It seemed beautiful to build a ship where he sailed on. An uncle of mine then indicated they would like to have a model of the 49 KW, Antje in 1959. My grandfather has been a fisherman on this ship and my uncle went with him several times as a kid. I have nothing promised to him but I started to look for information.

First, I came across a book with the following information to

N.V. Viss. Me. Kennemerland
Dageraad Woubrugge Year 1959
43,96 x 7:34 x 3.54 Capacity 291 Brt

07.18.1959 trial and transfer
1969 made suitable for beam trawling
1972 TX 46 Antje eig. P v.d. Vis
Sold in 1974 to Argentina is San Lucas

Unfortunately, there was further found little information on hand to be so I'm on several facebook pages and forums calls going to do if someone had more information, pictures or drawings. Immediately there were people who wanted to help me. They often had not the requested information but they knew people who had sailed on the ship. Unfortunately, many people already deceased but I managed to find a few people out after a lot of phone calls and mail, and some also had pictures.

During the trial

I finally managed to get to 32 original photographs of the KW 49 and I am very happy with it. Luckily I met a man who had sailed on the VL 16, a ship that was similar to the KW 49 He had a lot of pictures for me and even in color.

Drawings showed a different story. Several museums I have been called and talked to a lot of people, to heirs of the builder but no one knows where the drawings have remained. Well, I discovered that there were things from the yard (Dageraad in Woubrugge) in the National Archives in The Hague. I went through here, but unfortunately only found a contract, no drawings. Some time later I was contacted by a gentleman who did not have the original drawings but drawings of similar trawlers. He has sent me and it will definitely help me to build the Trawler The final line plan I have compiled from a line plan of a Belgian trawler that I got from a helpful fellow modeller

A general plan of a similar trawler
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/scan713_zpsfb6f907c.jpg)

Besides I have a lot of photos gathered from similar trawlers from that time so I always have a useful picture for details. Obviously, I can always go to former crew members to ask them how to build something

Meanwhile I have "enough" material to build, and as I said, I am so first started modifying a drawing. I then copied the drawing several times. I'm going to make the hull with the so-called pile construction method. This will come clear in the next updates This way you get a rough shape of the hull that you still need to smooth sanding. In the course of my report I will show you all the steps.

The model will be built in the 1/75 scale where it will have a length of about 58 cm.

Today I have sawn the mulitple sections of the hull. After this I will glue them together and then it's time for sanding, sanding and more sanding. I keep the lineplan nearby to control myself while sanding and then I will have an accurate hullform.

Today I sanded the new hull i made from mdf sections. The sanding went well and with the drawings and some photo's I managed to make a good shaped hull. Now I am going to finish the bull with some filler and sanding and then to the next step.

I've come a little further with the hull of the Antje. A solid hull, thats not wat I needed because the ship offcourse is hollow. To make a hollow hull I decided to go for vacuumforming. On the internet I searched for info and I made a vacuummachine. It didn't work in one try. The first time my vacuumboc imploded, the second time the styreen sheet came out of the frame but the tird try worked out well. I got a nicely shaped hollow hull. It is a little thin but I can solve that by gluing rinforcements on the inside or lay up some glasfibre. But the most important thing is, that I can go on now with the build! Hello everyone,

I managed to do some work on the KW48 Antje and I came some further with her. What was in the begining just a piece of raw plastic is now becoming more and more a ship. I really like working on here. I need to figure out a lot of things every time I have to build something, but its fun.
All the half round is added, the hole for the anchor is made. I adde al the visible ribs to the deck and I made the front deck and under it some hatches and a winch.
Now I started working on the upper structure and the bridge.

Regards, Kees

The last few days I worked on the upperstructure of the ship and the bridge. I used only polystyrene and glue. I am using lesser CA-glue these day but use super thin ps-glue. It glues fast and strong but you have the possibility to position the pieces you want to glue.

Pictures say more than words.

Thanks for the responce and for everyone who hit the like-button.

I managed to do some more work on the Antje. I build an exhaustpipe a roof for the wheelhouse and I added the first detaills on the ship.

Some progress on the little trawler from Holland.

I made some antenna's, a compass, a searchlight and some other bits and pieces.
It's hard to build an acurate model. Drawings don't show enough detaills and the photo's are made from to far sitance or are bad quality. I have to use lot's of photo's (also from other ships), drawing, the internet and the help from an old sailorman to make the parts but its very rewarding to do.

Now I will start working with a very strange material. Its has a brown collour, has a smell, splinters when you break it, and is not very easy to bend. I think it's a high tech new material from Nasa's laborotery's. Do you know the name? Very strange.... It makes me sneeze when I sand it (http://modelshipworld.com/public/style_emoticons/default/blink.png)

All the woodwork on the wheelhouse is done now and i guess it will look great after some varnish. I also made a mast. It took a lot of time to find out all the dimensions and how all the rigging was. This week I got some new photo's wich are very helpfull to me.

The reardeck and wheelhouse are finished now so I post some overall pictures for yoy to see how it's looking now. At this moment I started working on the winchhouse, the mast and the fishingbeams. These are later additions on the ship but they where allready there when my grandfather started to sail with here so I have to build them. It wont be easy because there are no drawings of this later additions and I have not much pictures of it. But with the help of some old fishermen I will make this to a succes.

Hello fellow shipbuilders,

Thank you for all the comments and for the likes! Man, I like the like-button! Miss it so much on the Dutch forums. Sometimes you dont't know what to say but with the like-button you can always let te author know you appriciate his work and his postings.
Today I worked on the trawl gallows. These gallows are placed on starboardside of the deck and they hold a pulley/block trough wich the fishingline runs into the sea. You can imagine how enormous force is exercised on these gallows so they were made from heavy steel and were anchored directly on the ships construction.

On this photo you can see the rear gallow with the heavy pulley/block. On the front of the ship there is also a gallow. The nets had two fishingline so the nets stayed open and with the pulleys/blocks the nets were hauled in.

And here some photo's of the building. Each trawl gallows containes more than 50 parts plus all the parts that fell on the floor and became unfindable. (http://modelshipworld.com/public/style_emoticons/default/sad.png)

Hello fellow shipbuilders!

I have done some work on the ship. Nice to work on those detaills but it takes a lot of hours to make and also to find out how everything was build in 1959. I made use of different photo's of different ships to make everything. Now on with the hull and other things.

Hello fellow shipbuilders

Last days I worked on two or three different things. The frontmast, a hole for the postside trawl gallow and I have lenghtened the spraydeck.

First I marked the position of the opening. This opening was added to the ship ten years after she was build. It was necessary because of the extra trawl gallow (which was placed to guid the portside fishingline to the fishingbeam).
Then I cut it out and sanded/filed everything smooth. Some halfround to make it all look good and finished.

It doesn't makes the ship more beautiful but I think it looks very sturdy this way. With all the additions you can really see that the ship is a true workingship.

And now a nice pic of the ship with both masts in place. Looks good hey?

Part one:

On the frontdeck I had to make a railing and today I started with this thankfull job. Readymade-raillings are for sale but I dont like them because they never fit the way you want and I think they are ugly. Make them myself it is then. First I make a design and then I mark the position of the stansions so I know how much I have to make.

28 It has to be.

Brass strip 2x1 mm.

This how they have to be when they are ready. If my Autocad-teacher would see this drawing he would not stop crying.

Cut the stansions
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/P1030096_zps4uqbggl8.jpg)

And then the drilling. Drill-thing a mould and enough drill-bits (I tought)

Ohh no there goes a drillbitt.... again... They are supersharp and I like the universal diameter of 3.2mm but when you look at them, they break. Or I am just a clumsy man? It was my last 0.55mm bit so I had to use a conventional drill.

Ready

Marking where the stansions end and where the pin starts
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/P1030102_zpsdoq4d2vs.jpg)

In the lathe. It's not really the right way to use this machine but hey! Who knows?!

Some little jobs had to be done on the Antje before I could give her a fine coat of primer

These are the last pictures before painting with the airbrush. I special love the first picture because with all the parts on the table it really looks like a modelkit.

Modelkit. Anyone knows the brand? All the piece apart is very handy when you paint them. No masking needed.

Here al the parts together for a nice snapshot. Very proud of what I have accomplished. Started with some bits and pieces and now I have a complete ship.

I bought a nice looking prop but its much to shiny. I like to paint the ship like its in use so it needs a little weathering. And so does the propellor. In the past I tried to do this with paint but that didnt work out well. I remembered a proces from scienceclasses called electrolyse with an katode and an anode. How that works you can find on the internet but the pictures below show how I (mis) use it.

Here's what whe start with. A nice and shiny propellor.

First an conductive fluid wich means you dump some salt in warm water and give it a goed stir.

Then the power supply. I use one with 9V DC and little amps
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/P1030190_zpszx7ukwmd.jpg)

Then separate the minus and the plus and connect them with the prop and a piece of metal with zinc on it. Try in wich order. If you have it right the prop will produce lots of small bubbles later.

Then place them in the water. Make sure the two pieces of metal do not touch eachother. I use some clips to clamp them to the pot.

When you do it wrong the zinc piece will produce bubbles
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/P1030194_zpsflboc8nm.jpg)

And when you do it right the prop will produce lots of bubbles
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/P1030195_zpsbdewhn2r.jpg)

Then leave it for some 15  minutes but try to inspect the prop during the process. It will go fast and if you are satisfied with the result stop on time. Its good to rub the prop with a rag so you can see the endresult.

Looks nice allready
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/P1030196_zpscqex8a4d.jpg)

And the final result. Iam very satisfied with it. I admit its a little bit ghettostyle but it works to me.

Some photo's of the paintshop. Painting is progressing very well but its a lot of work. Also some forgotten jobs to do. It was very hard to find out wich colours to use and where. I have only one hazy colourphoto made from a distance. But I think I have things clear now.

Progress in the paintshop. It's a real pain in the **s to find out wich collours where to use because I have only black/white pictures but with the help of some old sailors it will be a succes. Al collours will be softened later with washes and dry brush.

Before you look at the pictures please keep in mind that the work is not finished yet. Lots of finising paintwork has to be done and offcourse a matt finish to give a nice uniform shine on the work. First 3 pictures to show the work on the frontdeck and the last pictures one with a Dutch Florin again to show the dimensions. (A florin is less than an inch)

Portside from the bow

Some last progress on the model before completion. I made some decklights out of plastic. Painted and weathered them to make them look like brass. Also made a sail on the reardeck and I finished the deck with some boxes and other things. Last thing to do is to add the (later added) trawlportal and some rigging.

decklights
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/DSCF0006%202_zpsgosgesxw.jpg)

Decklights fitted. Also the nameplate is added

Reardeck
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/DSCF0014_zpsujm2ym76.jpg)

This is how she is now. Its the set-up of the ship like she was build in 1959. Later in 1969 a frontportal was added (as seen earlier in the thread)

Very nice work and I really enjoyed reading it as a complete build. Also your FR297 Propitious build was good to watch - loved the weathering.

:embarrassed: I go 3 to 4 times a year to a hobby exhibition and most of the times there is a Proxxon dealer. Then I send my kids ahead to ask for a free keychain. So I have a collection meanwhile 8)

The lathe is from an unknown brand and I sold her to bay another one more capable of turning metals. From Proxxon I have two micrmot drills wich are great and I had the drillpress but that one was very bad
