I am enquiring about the best masking tape to use with spray paints that DOES NOT BLEED
I am trying various ones but suffer the paint creeping under my lovely straight edge in little droplets. I appreciate that spraying over the tape and away from join line is best but I have no choice when it comes to curves. I can be spraying at all angles in an enclosed shape
Please help me as I have just ruined my latest project where I have crafted 4 different colours. 4 tins of Halford's best at nearly 7 quid a tin has been noticed by the Mrs and she's not very happy.

I used frog tape. 2 type green and yellow. I only use it for large areas. For pun line stuff I use tamiya tape. Expensive but the best.

I've been using insulating tape and white masking tape. Reels of the stuff !! Sometimes it worked but mostly it wasn't that successful.
How wide and long is the Tamiya tape please.

:-)) Tamiya tape every time, never had it bleed on me, I use the 10mm wide which is easier to work with also you get the handy dispenser....Ray

The best tape that I have found is 3M blue masking tape Kenny. It has never bled for me and its my choice of tape every time mate :-)) Oh and they sell it at B&Q too! I have only used Tamiya tape when I've needed to mask something small - Or a long straight length like a water line. But then I usually back that up with the 3M tape

Oh KEN OH Ken Oh Ken we have HAD this chat before and before...HOW many times have I got to say to EVERYONE there is NO and I repeat NO masking tape that will STOP paint bleed....Ive been spraying for OVER 30 yrs and if there is one then I think I would have found some by now
For heavens sake I will REPEAT myself yet again.....if you want to do a stripe.........even waterline there is only 1 tape that will STOP pain bleed and that is 3m FINE LINE TAPE....I repeat 3m FINE LINE TAPE

Fair comment NEVER seen that there TBH still wouldn't use I for edge to edge Only will use proper fine line tape or even 1/4inch insulating tape...when I can get hold of it

Its alright for model boats Dave but in my very very limited experience there is nothing better than genuine 3M tape. It just seems to work for me and I've also found that it cuts better around corners and the like. It never seems to lift unlike some of its cheaper competitors. Oh and it doesn't seem to tear when you remove it either. I guess you get what you pay for.

Tamiya masking tape all the way used it on my moonraker which had some pretty fiddly shapes to mask off and it worked great. You get it in 18m lengths from 6mm upto 26mm (I think)

Good to freshen the topic every now and then.
I to have been spraying paint for over 30 years using various tapes and I always put it down to good surface prep and clean, running my nail along the edge, never had one problem in all that time. Thats even with celloptape, masking tape and fine line tape only thing i wouldnt use is parcel tape!

I had a feeling it wasn't going to easy.
Thank you everyone for your input. I enclose a 'close up' of my "paint job". You've got to admit it looks ghastly. I am making a bus and want the colour scheme to be the Stagecoach line. When you're out and about, have a look at one to see the colour scheme involved. There are 4 colours in total and these are mixed all over the place with curved lines. Some on top of others and some beside others.
I have been using electricians tape which 'sort of works' and gives the illusion of a join line but on closer inspection is very poor. I am after the clean razor sharp edge which will stand close scrutiny. I was dreading Stavros's comments and they tend to confirm my belief.
I shall try Tamiya tape and 3M tape and see how I get on. Having just sanded down the whole bus and washed and sanded away 40 quids worth of paint I am a little depressed I shall ever get it right.

Seems that Tamiya tape and a sharp scalpel is the favoured method, with Maskol (liquid latex masking) for fine details.
That and a lot of practice :-))

Sorry to mention it but you will always get paint creep if the surface to which you apply the paint isn't completely smooth. For example, if there is still a discernible grain then the tape will 'bridge' over it, leaving a gap underneath for the paint to creep into. Rubbing along the edge with a fingernail will help to a certain extent but no masking tape ever invented will follow a grainy texture completely.

A little tip I read about a few years ago was to seal the edge of the tape with the colour you are masking up.
So if you have masked up a red then spray a light pass of red just to seal the tape.
If any colour creeps under the edge it is the same as what you have masked.
Then spray your next colour over that 'sealing' layer.
I reckon a little practice would be required but the idea seems plausible.
Anyone ever tried this method ?

One of the unwritten rules of this forum is that you must not read any of the earlier posts in the same thread, and NEVER refer to any in other threads (especially if they might seem at all relevant). A good question is only truly good if it's repeated frequently.
Other popular subjects are BEC, LiPo batteries (in general), choice of kits for beginners and whining motors.

Maybe the answer isn't which tape, even though Tug-Kenny was "...enquiring about the best masking tape to use with spray paints that DOES NOT BLEED." The emphasis is on bleeding.
Why not try over-spraying with a clear coat? That is what will bleed and not be visible.
I have had good results with that method.
Kenny, If you do try the different tapes by all means do post your results.

Liquid mask is good, but takes some practice to get right.

Go read the specs on 3m tape as dave suggested or frog tape. Both are excellent. Frog tape is a 50m roll and comes ready for acrylic or oil based paints (2 different types) also in low tack and hi tack. So there are 4 options on one tape. 3m tape that dave suggests is excellent as well and used in the car industry. But for plimsoll lines etc tamiya is best as you buy it in ready widths.

Why not try over-spraying with a clear coat? That is what will bleed and not be visible.

We went for the Frog tape in the end. The choice was for the one for spray paint and it was applied as suggested.
After pressing down the edge by running our thumb along it, we lightly sprayed over the join with the base coat, as recommended. The painting was applied about 4 hours later and left overnight in the warm house. It peeled off the following day very easy with no tearing or stretching and the results are SUPERB.
