Title: Dutch Beamtrawler KW88 Pelikaan Scale 1:75
Post by: kees de mol on December 02, 2015, 09:13:55 pm
In this buildinglog I will present you the build of the Dutch beamtrawler KW88, Pelikaan.

42,35 x 8,50 x 5,16 mtr
Build in 1999 as the UK 153, Lun Senior, sold in 2007 and named KW88, Pelikaan.
Motor: 2000HP Deutz

The ship has sumwings and uses an electric pulse system The sumwing are like wings and do not touch the bottom. With electric pulse the fish jumps of the bottom and ends in the net.

I started collecting information, photo's and drawings a few months ago and now I am at the point that I can actually start with the build.
I have a complete set of original drawings and almost 500 photo's

It will take some time before I start building this ship because I want to finish the KW49 first.

First some photo's of the ship.

As the UK 153

Hello everybody,

At this moment I have done a lot of work for this model allready. Lots of work will not be vissible when she is ready but is inevitable to get a realistic model. But how good is the feeling when you have (after all the work) a fysical hull in your hands wich look svery good. On the pictures you see the wooden model of the hull. They call this the plug and I will use this in the future to make a polyester mould arround it so I can make multiple hulls out of it. I do this because I want to make two of the same models and maybe I can sell some hull later to other modelbuilders.
The pictures
Here you see a lot of copys of the lineplan to make templates for the longitudinal cross-sections (does that make any sense? I used Google translate so blame them if not.... (http://modelshipworld.com/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png) )

The templates are ready to trace them on the wood
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/DSCF0091_zpsqkgxhxmb.jpg)

The wood (triplex 3,5mm)

All templates traces on the triplex
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/DSCF0094_zpsu2qvrhmg.jpg)

The gluing of the longitudinal cross-sections. I pay attention that they are on the correct line and place according the drawings.

And here all the sections together and the top-part glued in places
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/DSCF0096_zpsdo0dzfca.jpg)

And then with the help of several powertools and a lot of sanding by hand sanding the shape of the hull. I have to do this very carefull so I wont sand to much. Most of the finishing I do by hand because you have more feeling and it gives a better result.
(Okay I admit. The sander was not even turned on. My wife made an ACTION-picture. But you can see I lost weigt tough (http://modelshipworld.com/public/style_emoticons/default/cool.png) )

It's getting shape
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/11393198_674913165985663_219205978233720656_n_zpsjfeygtlp.jpg)

And then after a lot of sanding and filling (lots of times) you see the result. Its nice and smooth and ready for further finishing.

Thank you for watching, like-ing and reply-ing. The build is on and more updates will follow soon!

Kind regards, Kees

I started working on the beamtrawler again. In the summer it's just to hot at the attic so I can't build there. I have done some home improvement instead and build some showcases for a friend.

I sanded the hull and painted her with epoxy and the sanded her again. She has a babyskin now, soft and smooth. I also made a start with the halfround and the spraydeck.

More work done on the KW88.

Prepare the moulds for laminating. It will be a two part mould. First I will prepare and laminate the first half and after that I will remove the wooden plate and laminate the second half. I have never done this before so it will be exciting. It will take some weeks before I can show the results.

What a beautiful ship, and absolutely astounding workmanship.

I can only dream of ever acquiring half the talent to do something like this, but it is fascinating to see how you do such work.

Thank you for showing us all your expertise.

Hello fellow shipbuilders,

Meanwhile I made the roof and the so-called "Pet" and that makes the bridge really complete. It was very hard to find the correct shape and it took me more cardboard and ps plate than I wanted. But at the end it worked out well.

Hello

Thanks for watching my buildingreport and for the support I get from you. Not only in this report but in forum as whole. Your buildings really encourage me to build.

I worked on the Pelikaan again. On the wheelhouse I wanted something to watch at so I started building an interior. It's meanth to be scematic and it is not on scale. But I think it looks good later when you look trough the small windows of the wheelhouse

And I did some work on the hood.

not much enthousiasm here.

The winch took me more than 8 hours to build. I want to build more models so I wanted to make resin catings of it

For both materials (silicons and resin) there is an A and a B component. You have to mix them 1:1 and then casting.

I first made a silicon mould which I leave to harden for two days and then I went casting.

Weighing the components on a scale
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/IMG_20151230_174701_zpsqg5z41le.jpg)

Then mixing very wel without airbubbles but quick because the resin hardens very fast (2 minutes)

Then casting.

I tried to remove the bubles with a toothpick. Thats works good
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/IMG_20151230_175120_zpsrs7j6dna.jpg)

Everuthing very fast because the resin hardens very quick. The white glaze is the area where the resin starts to harden
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/IMG_20151230_175113_zpsdsexhaoq.jpg)

After 30 minutes you can remove the parts from the mould.

After two huors and some sanding I had 3 copies. And some hatches too
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/IMG_20151230_182729_zpss37zdy46.jpg)

I am very satisfied with the endresults. Only the first winch and hatches did need some more attention because I didnt removed the airbubbles the first time. But nothing serious, just some filler and sanding to make them right.

The mould cured well. It's the mould for the collectingbins where the fishermen empty the net in. There are two bins and the skipper can empty them in a central bin from where there is a conveyor-belt to move the fish to the workdeck.

You have been pushing the envelope on resin casting kees! I missed the start of this build but I am glad I found it as the subject is very attractive.

I wish you good luck with your build, I will be following it with interest. Can you show us your milling machine? it looks mighty interesting.

Excellent Kees!

I visited the silicone and more website and was very pleased how much Dutch I can still read.it does me good to keep it up now and again.

Unfortunately with the amount of products I wasn't sure which ones you use to make the silicone moulds! There appears to be different kinds and colours and I'm not sure which to buy to try and do what you did.

I see  you buy a liquid silicone and a hardner please could you give me some product numbers.
Same for the resin. I just wish to try and make some simple boat features less than 3cm thick for example.

Thanks for any help.   U2

I use the yellow silicon
http://www.siliconesandmore.nl/nl/products/siliconen-a-transparant-41.html (http://www.siliconesandmore.nl/nl/products/siliconen-a-transparant-41.html)

And the D70 PU resin
http://www.siliconesandmore.nl/nl/products/pu-polyurethaan-gietsysteem-set-d70-snel.html (http://www.siliconesandmore.nl/nl/products/pu-polyurethaan-gietsysteem-set-d70-snel.html)

You can buy it per kilo (500 grams A-component and 500 grams B-component)

Take in mind that the PU-resin has a limited expiration date

The chimney has a simple shape at first glance but I got some drawings of it and then you find out its a rather complex shape. There are some curved, round shape which run into each other. And there are some details which form a nice challenge to me.

First I had to build a chimney from polystyreneplate

And then the battery of my camera went dead so no more pictures from the building.

Like the other parts I need more chimneys so I started building a mould. It was hard to find out how I had to do this and I ended up building a 2-part mould from which one part had to cut at one side.

Here one part of the mould is curing. I had to use lots of silicone so with the other part i made some inserts to save on silicones.

Here are the two parts of the mould. You can see the left part has an incision. The parts I place on each other and then I place the red plastic around it to support the mould.

Later I find out that the mould contains some bubbles on some section. These bubbles will be in the castings too so thats a bummer. It is because of the 2-part mouldmaking. Only a vacuummachine can solve this but thats very expensive.

The casting. First I cast the thin upper part with 20grams of resin. With a thootpick I add some resin to the details in the thicker peace to avoid bubbles in the next casting.

After that I cast the thicker part whit 30grams resin and 30grams filler to save on the resin.

And then te results

Some flash but this is very thin and can be removed easily

The place where the bubbles are.

And then in 1,5 hours I got 4
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/IMG_20160108_171807_zpsgeqdn319.jpg)

offcourse I will add the details later

I finished the searchlights. Lot of parts and very small to make. I also used the lathe to make some signal lights (the glasses) There are 13 glasses per chimney. I made a toolbit to make the pattern in the clear plastic.

Today I did the last things to the polyester mold. I cut all the edges sanded and everything. Then it was time to find out if both halves of the mold wanted to separate. First I very carefully put a chisel between the halves and into the gap I tapped wooden wedges. It took some time and effort but suddenly The first halve separated from the wooden hull and after some tapping the other half released.
I am very happy because it was quite a lot of work and it was very exciting if everything would work the way I wanted.

Here some pictures from begin till now

Thank you all for the motivations {:-{

Today I finished the Self Inflatable Liferafts. I remeber my father (who was a fisherman) called them dinkys. It has two plastic shells which are bond together and in between is the liferaft. The liferaft is stored in a steel cage which can be tilted over to release the raft in the sea. In the water the  raft inflates and a rope keeps the raft close to the ship.

A picture of a raft
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/Military%20Vessels%20and%20Liferafts%20-%20Surviva%20Liferaft-l_zps15oods4l.jpg)

Soldering the cages

The rafts. I made on to use it as a mould and then I casted more in PU resin.

With some decals
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/IMG_20160210_141326_zpss1khrjle.jpg)

And this is how they will be on the ship. Two rafts on each ship

Hi Kees, I have just seen your posts. The designer must have been a fine art student at heart as the funnelmast is a work of art. You must have sworn and cheered in equal measures whilst recreating it.

Wether you make it a kit r not, the detail will be fantastic considering the life raft containers and their holders and the searchlights.

Classy work Kees :-))

For the trawler I needed a propellor and usually I buy these at the hobbystore but this time I couldnt find what I was looking for and the props I found were expensive (around 15-20 euro's). I need three so it would be a very big gap in my budget.

I looked on the internet for pictures of propellors but there were mostly beautiful new and shiny and thats not the way I wanted them.

And this is the way I like to build and paint them. This ship has fished for two years now before she went in the drydock
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/12805834_1705828853034018_257908672683134963_n_zpsk7kmjybs.jpg)

I started with strips of styreen which I heated and shaped in the right shape. After that I made the shaft with the cuts for the blades
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/IMG_20160308_181750_zpsonjypu4f.jpg)

After some glueing I used some Milliput to make a smooth curve from the shaft to the blade. So it looks like a casted one
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/IMG_20160310_155807_zpszd3sgowi.jpg)

Here the first paintwork. I used an aluminiumcolour with pigements to get the colour Ik wanted. After this I gave the props a protective coat of varnish
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/IMG_20160310_180344_zpsaxgawhlv.jpg)

Than I went on painting with oilpaint. I want to weather one prop like its in use for years and the other two will get some lighter weathering.

Ik started building the mast of the ship (In Holland we call it the voor(front)portaal but I dont know how it's called in English). I had some very good drawings whitch were printed out (very kindly by the guy who gave me the drawings) in scale 1/75. At first sight I thought it wouldn't be a lot of work and my plan was to post the mast here totally finished but I found out it was loads of work so I make an update to show how far I am now.

I started gluing some styreen together and soon ther was a nice mast born at the attick.

And I had to make some stairs. I had bought some stairs in the hobby store but then I found out the stairs had an angle so my ready made stairs weren't good to use

Some progress just because I am proud of it. I made the trawl-beams and glued them to the mast.

The most work is in installing the ridiculously small led's On every mast are just 5 led's but it was a total nightmare to place them and their wiring. But it works (http://modelshipworld.com/public/style_emoticons/default/cheers.gif)  I hope to make a small vid for you later.

Good lord that is fine work Kees. I especially love the pivots on the ends of the masts. Excellent :-))

Regarding your old soldering iron? As long as it does what it is meant to do and without being harmful, then its still the right tool for the job.

What you have created is a work of art. Such brilliant use of plastics and metals. Obviously, you can be justifiably proud of your achievement. Well done Kees. O0 :-))

Just one question, if I may - what is the S39 ? (my soldering is terrible)

Dave

Watch out with S39 when you want to solder electronics. Because it is acidious it will damage the electronics in time. I use solderingwire with a resin (flux 3,5%) core to solder leds and stuff. But for brass and copper constructions S39 is the right thing to use.

I worked on the masts and they are finished now. I have build the reinforcemwent at the front of the masts.

I also worked on the chanels where the fishinglines go trough. The lines come from the winch and go to the beams

Hello folks

I started to make some rigging for the model because there are a lot of blocks on this ship. The first ones to build are the jumperblocks. These are used to lift parts of the nets. Their shapes makes it possible to lift the nets, chains shackles, hooks and other stuff without damage.

A very bad picture of the originals
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/IMG_20160421_130443_zpsau8eeswa.jpg)

The housings cut out of thin brass sheet.

And then the rolls. I made these on my small lathe. First I formed a toolbit/chisel and then I made the form
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/keesdemol1/IMG_20160420_170543_zpsst9ykzz5.jpg)

Yes! Finely there are some video images from the cave %%

Offcourse people: Do Not Try This At Home!(http://modelshipworld.com/public/style_emoticons/default/cool.png)

And the results

It is now one year ago that I recieved the drawings for this model and soon after that I started building. It all takes some more time than I planned but the results are more important to me.

No building activity tommorrow  because I hope to visit the Intermodellbau in Dortmund.

It will cost me money though....

So please dont tell the missus ;) %) ;D

Building more blocks. These single blocks look very simpel but I wanted them to look realistic ans made some work on them. I made 3x8=24 blocks (25 actually but there is a parts-eating monster somewhere in my hobbyroom.)

An example of the blocks. But there are very much different types and over the years the blocks changed.

One of the last things to build on this ship are the portals on the back of the ship. This portal is placed a few years after the ship was build. First there was a crane and a rubberboat

The portal is used for the two puleys that guides the pulswires to the nets

Here the placing of the portal

They're not models they're works of art!

I just watched the video, excellent, where did you get the tool that cuts the circles in the plastic card?

Superb, superb, superb....... One for each model..... U2

Sorry for the late answer to your question. I bought it on Ailexpress and the brand is Olfa. If you google on circle cutter You can find other brands.

I made some progress on the Pelikaan.

I made some progresse with the decks and the foremasts by combining them together, Structual everything is okay now so I can start doing the thing I like the most... adding details. Thats for the next update but first some pictures of what I did today.

Wooden guards and some metalworking beneath the spraydeck. Next stap will be adding all the details and then the opening where the fish goes in the ship. Lots of work to do but very rewarding.

And here some parts of the ship safely in my new showcase. I made this case to protect the parts when I work on other parts.

Working on the Pelikaan.

I started on the bullwarks and realized they are the last structural things I have to build. All the other parts have been build and now is the time to put together everything.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/365/32355285002_8669fdc49c_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Ri8hZq)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/Ri8hZq) by Model Fishingships (https://www.flickr.com/photos/145015607@N08/), on Flickr

Yesterday I glued the spraydeck on the hull (and with this the maindeck and the structure under the spraydeck which were attached to the spraydeck)

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/387/31663886674_31e324c30c_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Qf2GmA)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/Qf2GmA) by Model Fishingships (https://www.flickr.com/photos/145015607@N08/), on Flickr

After that I finished the bullwarks and the next thing is to finish (sanding etc) the hull so I can paint them.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/779/31697948004_2e60ff90e4_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Qi3gAU)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/Qi3gAU) by Model Fishingships (https://www.flickr.com/photos/145015607@N08/), on Flickr

I also made the metal stands. They are attached to the hull and will be fastened to a wooden plank. It's just the structural part the finishing will follow. The pipes are hollow so I can lead electric wire through them later.

Kees,

Dat is een heel mooi model schip, Goed gedaan Kees, je bent een compliment.

Apologies to my fellow Brits on an English site but I felt I had to say what I thought of Kees' modelling skills in his own language....Incredible work.

(By the way, my wife is half Dutch, so we go there a lot and have a big family, and now, I can actually order a beer or two and ask for the toilet in fluent Dutch!!)

Back to Kees, what do you think you could make of the Trawler/Fishshop in Breskens Harbour....(Type it in Google to see what I mean.)

Tot ziens,............Ron Rees.

Hello Ron. I think I know that trawler because of the absurdly high prices :o They must be selling lobsters of gold for the price they ask.

Maar Breskens is een leuke haven, zeker door de oesterputten die ze daar nog hebben.

Some progress on the KW88. Let there be light(s)

Added some red accents. The ship's name on the side and the letters vD (van Duijn) stands for the owners name. Also painted the puls winches. For the (orange) pulse wire. This wire leads to the net on which are electrodes attached. These electrodes send pulses to the seabottome so the fish jumps up in the net. Much less damage to the bottom and less fuel consumption.

Absolutely superb finish on the hull Kees :-)).......

One question.....in the earlier plans we see the bow thruster grill plate as horizontal and vertical, and yet you have placed them in an angled [45 degrees?] orientation.....is the some water flow difference or advantage?

Again ...brilliant detail O0.... Derek

I had some underwater pictures of another trawler and made them like that :embarrassed: . Later I got some pictures of the KW88 and now you make me realize I placed them wrong. I leave it like this. (strange thing is that the other ship (from which I had some pictures) is a sistership of the KW88)

The three grills are shaped like a wing and the cross plate is for reinforcement. On other ship there aren't grill at all.

It does seem to be that with a series of ships built differences do creep in during their construction. Classes of warship are a good case in point especially back in the day when new ideas and developments occurred almost weekly in all forms be it power plant, armament, radar, even mast layout and rigging. Then add refits and damage repairs and you get quite different looking ships in time. A case in point is the Queen Elizabeth class Battleships. QE and Valiant get a mammoth rebuild  while warspite gets a large recuild with malaya and Barham getting much less done.

Gorgeous models by the way Kees  :-))

Thank you for sharing your build on here Kees. It has been a fascinating insight, into a modern fishing vessel, which you have captured in great detail, with some innovative techniques employed - a BIG WELL DONE. :-))

Ray.

Amen. The setting you photographed the completed models was just right (Taking into account that the sea is their natural environment!) The light seemed to give the models an aged look.

I reckon your next build will be a warship.

I made a glass in lead showcase for the model. It gives a nice open view to the model. On the baseplate are two switches for the lights on the model and on the back there is a connector for a 4.5mm jack plug.

Amen to that. And you won't catch your sleeve on the railings or any protrusions.
