Title: Fitting railings question
Post by: Pointy on May 28, 2006, 12:47:05 am
Okay, so you build your railings on the boat, then remove them for painting- or on a jig. So how do you re attach them onto the model without glue showing up? I mean if you spray paint the hull and deck then try to glue on the railings- how do you touch them up afterwards, won't using a brush ruin the spray finish of the model?

I use James Lane Guardrails and when painted dont use glue to attach them, just push them back in the same holes.
The theory being that I dont drill the holes exactly at right angles in 2 planes so this small inefficiency keeps them in place quite well.
Also the stantions are drilled through the inwhales supporting the deck so a good deep hole is required, and I trim them quite long.
This does mean if any get damaged they can be easily replaced, and yes are quite strong too.
For superstructure guardrails I get them as I want them then apply a small amount of superglue with a cocktail stick from underneath.
The holes are a good tight fit so the fumes dont discolour the paintwork.

If you can't glue the rails without the glue being visible then make use of the visible glue.  As in painting as bases for the stanchions.  Or, since the only useful glue is in the hole with the post, remove the visible stuff.  Brushed paint being visible on spray paint?  Use the same paint, be careful.  Gotta be quick and it's wasteful, but it works.

PS - I HATE hand rails!

As a rule I fix my 18thou PE  individual  stanchions [available to everyone] in position , in a pre-drilled hole after touching the fixing tab into a drop of medium instant glue. The model is then sprayed including the stanchions . If the stanchions are of a different colour I hold a sheet of paper loosely against them to prevent most of the overspray then touch up later if req'd. This way no glue lines are visible.

Hi Guys, What I do is mark out on a piece of balsa wood the shape I want for the rails, then I bend 3 rails to the shape and slide the stantions along the 3 rails. mark out there positions on the balsa wood and push in position and glue, when dry ,I paint them, then when dry position them on the model, It works for me. :) :)
