Title: Libre office/Open office
Post by: Fastfaz on December 15, 2015, 05:11:06 pm
     Hi everyone,
           The PC Dinosaur aka Moi needs help (so SWMBO says). So many problems with my laptop that I took it in to be serviced/sorted and ended up having it wiped and re set to factory settings, this means that its bye Microsoft office as god knows where the necessary disc/code number etc are as we have moved twice since we bought the laptop to get it back its a hand in wallet once again which, because of the small time I use it, does not justify the cost.
     What I would like to know is has anyone downloaded either "Libre office or Open office" and if so are they safe to download and do they work? All I need is the word part of office i.e. letter writing boat names sizing and the ability to send these things to the printer as I could with the original Microsoft office.
     All advice greatly appreciated I don't want to download either without advice as that's how the laptop ended up at the shop through my lack of PC understanding.
     Thanks guys,
           Cheers,
                 Faz. {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ {:-{

I have used Open Office for years.
No issues for me.
My use is very much the same as yours.

I have used Open Office for a good many years until after the split between the original writing team and the new owners, which spawned Libre Office.
Since then, I have found that Libre is easier to acquire on the occasions when I had need to install one or the other, so I don't know about relative ease of use (pretty much identical back then), but with both at the same price, I am sticking with Libre.  Both have all the features that I need, MS's offering probably has a great deal more to offer, none of which I need, certainly for the extra.

     Excuse the lack of knowledge but I thought (as on google) that these two downloads were free or am I mistaken. Thanks again for your help.

Yes LIBRE office is a good app' you can read all MS OFFICE files with it , got a few 'funnies' tho', no automatic update (that's no problem , your notified top right when one's available) in their EXCEL version you need to widen the required columns manually, you'll know this when you try to paste into the column just get XXXXX instead of figures , again no problem click & drag it wider.

         Faz, I seem to remember reading somewhere,  and I'm quite ready to be corrected by more IT literate folk than I, that provided you had a legal and first use copy of the program(?) and the computer is the same machine , then you can get it re-installed via a download from Microsoft because their systems 'remember' the ID of your machine and the issue of the program. I'm not sure how one would go about this though,

I've also used Open Office many time for friends, no problems!
NB. Install the absolute minimum you need, i.e. custom install and then only the bits you need, e.g. Writer & Calc. etc.
