A friend has given me a 40" Elco PT109 MTB semi scale over Christmas, I would like to convert it to brushless power, any help with motor size, whether watercooled or not, escapement sizes watercooled or not. Propellor sizes etc.
Any help will be gratefully received as I'm an older returning modeller trying to catch up!

Hi,
Is the Italeria model? or other and do you intend to run 1, 2 or 3 Motor set up.
Then I am sure we can come up with a few sugestions.

Its an all wooden model, single prop shaft, so single motor set up!

:-)) Go with a 650kv outrunner and a 100amp esc running on 14.8v 4c 5000ma lipo,if you use a outrunner and a car esc you will not need water cooling,the size of prop needed is a 50mm 3 blade,with this set up it will go like stink and have a fair run time.....Ray :-))

:-)) Sorry forgot to mention,a fuse in between the battery and esc,seen to many nice models fry for the lack of a fuse....Ray. :-))

:-)) As regards motors I have Prop drive 500kv and 650kv,the esc I use Tornigy 100amp,I use this set up in three of my boats which are of roughly the same size and I sail regularly without trouble,you can get these from hobbyking but buy from UK warehouse or you might get stung for duty,bare in mind that this is my personal choice which I found by trial and error and a lot of time at the lake,there could be someone out there who has found an even better setup than this,as I said this is a setup which gives a good performance without braking the bank....Ray. :-))

:-)) Forgot to mention that the NTM 500kv Prop drive 42-58 is 1300 watt and the NTM 650kv Prop drive 42-48 is 1295 watt....Ray :-))

Hi thanks for the info, very interesting, I am trying to find / work out the power for a twin motor 48 inch wood fireboat. I am guessing that two Ntm 3530 1400kv at 560 watts each, will get her on the plane easily. 3 cell lipo each. What size do you reckon,

I use the Hobbyking 3639-750kv 600w, 3639-1100kv 800watts, D3548/4-1100KV 910 watts or 3648-1450KV 1600watts.
ESC car 60-100Amp.
Props 40-50mm 2 blade or 37mm 3blade.
All Hobbyking products.
These range of motors will power 30 inch plus boats.
e.g. MFA Spearfish 3639-1100KV on 3S 5800Mah battery 50mm prop runs over 30mph.

Just bought a HobbyKing brushless 3639 1100kV motor & HK-100A ESC, noticed that the motor wires are all the same colour (black), how the hell do you wire it up, does it make any difference which wire goes where? Any help gratefully received, sorry but I'm new to brushless boats.

Hi,Biggles,it don't matter which way the 3 wires from the motor and the 3 wires from the ESC are connected,if the motor runs backward just swop 2 of the 3 wires over and it will run the other way very simple in fact......Ray.

I'm running a 800Kv 4250 Outrunner on 4S in my semi scale M.A.S. which gives me about 10.000 rpm under load.
With a 58mm two blade aluminium prop I get this kind of performance:

With two 4800mAh lipo packs wired in parallel I can run full throttle for 25 minutes, when I run at walking pace with the occasional 100 sprint, I have over two hours of runtime.
Both ESC and motormount are watercooled with my long walks along the canals of my town in mind, after an hour things do get hot without it.
I wonder why you got a 1100KV motor when all advice pointed you towards a lower KV?
Or are you running on 3S?
The 800Kv in my M.A.S. is already regarded as over the top on 4S...

Hi Jim,
Non of my fast boats have fuses, the spikes getting out of the hole, such as the short sprint in the video, are close to 50A.
The fuses required need to be the slow type and rather hefty, so much other components gave up before the fuse blew (blade type car fuse).
A lighter fuse did blow, just not to prevent mayhem, but almost every time I gunned the throttle, very annoying.
The features of my 100A ESC have done their job sofar and the watercooling avoids any overheating, so I skipped the fuse completely.

:-)) I have done test on max current on my Sea Commander with my above set up,I use a Component shop power analyser which will records the max current,voltage and watts,on 6s lipo the current was 12.6amps,I have fused at 15amps and no problems,by the way this boat is so fast it nearly takes off and was not light with the throttle when I carried out the test. :-))
