Title: RIP in 2016

This is getting scary. Less than 3 weeks in and we've lost Lemmie, David B, Alan Rickman and now the Big Eagle.
Chunks of my life are being torn away. Whoever you are, please stop it.
I'm sure there's an Eagles song which is 100% appropriate, but right now I'm going to go to bed and weep a little for Glenn Frey.

We also lost Dale Griffin yesterday, drummer with Mott the Hoople (forwhom Bowie wrote 'All the Young Dudes').

Death's putting the band together, folks!

RIP Glenn Frey, also wrote the theme tune to that 80's tv series Miami Vice. A great musician and a sad loss, another rock legend of my youth leaves us much the poorer.

We also lost one of the UK's best ever jazz organists a week or two ago, Alan Haven. Not everyone's cup of tea, but oh boy could he play. And on the occasions I met him, he came across as a really nice guy.

That 'Great Gig in the Sky' is going to be a belter.

The Eagles wrote the theme music for Hitch hikers guide to the universe as well so Frey had a hand in quite a few iconic pieces of music. I saw the Eagles perform twice.

It makes you wonder who will pass away next week:O(

Yes, I very nearly got caught by the e-re-reporting of Leslie Nielsen's passing 5 years ago.  It seems that there is an automated thingy looking at stories held on news sites, and inserting them into "most popular" lists.  It says a lot for the enduring popularity of Leslie "Don't call me Shirley" Nielsen that mentioning him can start a snowball rolling.

I wasn't a fan of his until one day I copped for the job of liaison lineman when his morning show was done as an outside broadcast from the Savoy at Blackpool (he was compere for the Miss UK that year).  I had not realized that his "script" was a list of the records to be played and a pile of "readers letters", all the chat was off the cuff, always humorous, never offensive and with a gentle whimsy that is probably irreplaceable.  And, unlike some BBC early morning presenters, he could read the time off a clock.  The world is a poorer place for his loss.

Hi all, what a guy!  Now and again he appears as comentary on aircraft documentaries on cable TV.  So down to earth and he reckons his small size saved his life a few times.
I love the story of when he was expelled from Germany as WW2 started.  The Nazis confiscated everything except his English sports car.  When he asked why everything else and not the car he was told, "No spares".

He made 97 after a life of adventure
Great guy.

I too was sad to hear of the death of Captain Eric 'Winkle' Brown. He was the Captain at RNAS Lossiemouth when I joined for basic Observer training in 1968, and I still have the picture when he presented me with my Wings at the end of the Buccaneer course in May 1969. I flew with him once in the Sea Prince during basic Observer training, him as a Captain and me as a Midshipman! I was glad to have known him.

I think it's due to the first tranche of Music and TV Personalities
that brought the late 50's/early 60's to life.
They came into our homes like never before, and being in their
Twenties and Thirties, then, are now 70/80, so are in
the twilight of their lives.
I hope they will never be forgotten, but in 20 years time,
Who will remember them?

Is this the year to start the Model Boat Mayhem "Dead Pool"? We had one when I worked for HMC&E (a black-hearted bunch at the best of times) but it eventually turned into a wish list!
What bothers me more than the current crop of elderly twig jumpers is the number of people whose deaths I can remember all too vividly - and how long ago they died!! Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Elvis, Brian Jones, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Sandy Denny - look 'em up and weep for your long lost youth.

He was a very funny man in his own right, and the seeming shadow formed by Barker's comedy genius as was Eric Morcambes, with Ernie wise, it was merely shading an equally bright wit. You only have to look at Corbett's delivery of his monologues, and his ripostes in the many funny plays on words and the music hall pieces they did together.

It's OK cornishlad - I had a scout about, and evidently somebody on twitter had said something along the lines that
Percy Sledge and Prince were together again(?) and everybody then assumed that Percy Sledge had (just) died
everybody else then re-tweeted? it like mad.    Isn't the Internet and modern communications wonderful!

I've been caught out before with stuff popping up on the most-read section on the BBC
News website and then found that it was an old story somehow pushed up to the top of the list.

Unfortunately I'm not. My musical memories go back to "Uncle Mac" on the BBC Light Programme on a Saturday morning, followed by two sacred hours of Brain Matthews' 'Saturday Club'. Bless him but old Brian is still there at the same time on BBC Radio 2 after well over 50 years. He's been on my Died This Year list for over a decade!
There will be many more - it's just the way things are.

I preferred him to Vine. I liked his presentation style and his ability to interview politicians to best effect for the listener. He was described as being able to get more out of Maggie Thatcher by pusing her more for answers, and therefore the BEEB always asked him to intereview her.

I remember him on his lunchtime show listening to him as a child.

Ah! 'The Man from Laramie'. No more recipes today then, Raymondo.
JY was Radio 2 to his fingertips - just like Ray Moore before him and Wogan afterwards.
I also can't bear Vine. He alternates between loudly shouting while other people are talking, and sounding like he's about to tell you your dog's just been run over. I generally refer to him as Smeghead...

I once heard a dull party described thus:
"There were no scantily-clad birds running round the house or much boozing in the kitchen - we all sat in the lounge and then someone brought in a tray of knives and put them on the coffee table... We just sat there, looking at them and listening to "Songs from a Room"..."
If you can remember the 60's then you can remember Leonard Cohen.
I found his later stuff far more interesting and yes - amusing (albeit in a dark sort of way).

He only made one model having seen my boats on our lake and asked me for advice. It took him over a year but he built a lovely Emma C. Berry schooner which sailed well. He said his build took his mind off his pain. I will miss him more than any 'name'.

The life that touched a few people touches deeper than the life that touched millions.

We at Bognor wargmaes club had a member that was terminally ill, and we arranged an Arnhem game so that he could set himself the goal of painting a Brigade of Paras and play in the game with them. Sadly the game was a memorial as he passed away a month before. Like with your friend Keith, it took his mind off things somewhat.

Those who are into full size sailing will need no reminding of the enormous impact made on the sport by Paul Elvstrom.  The Great Dane has died at 88 and leaves a vast legacy of advances in small boat sailing, not to mention four Olympic gold medals (1948, 1952, 1956, 1960) and countless other championship wins.  A great sportsman who gave a lot more than he took.  RIP

I heard today that Terry Westrop passed away last week some modelers here may have known or heard of him from the model aero scene he was a World Champion pattern flyer in the 70's and 80's and produced some of the best pattern flying kits around in those days. He was always featured in Radio Modeller and Aeromodeller magazines he and Ken Binks who went over to radio sailing and still very competitive were the guys I admired in my flying days.

They weren't going to tour anymore Stavros, they had already decided that at the end of the last one. Rick was already ill and was finding it too hard to carry on. Besides, Francis Rossi was 68 not so long ago! Even the last tour ended with them being an acoustic band (on stools)  as they were finding it too hard to carry a 2 hour gig rocking out.

I saw the Quo at the Aberdeen exhibition center in the mid 1990's and they rank up there in my top 4 live bands ( and I've seen a lot of bands.. ) , some people said 3 chord songs weren't rock... erm no as anyone who's seen them live will tell you they were rock ( although I think they thought of themselves as more a heavy blues band , incidentally if you'd ever said to Lemmy from Motorhead that his music was heavy metal you'd have been punched he called his brand of music rock and roll and if you've ever heard the acoustic version of ace of spades you can see its really a rock and roll blues song )

Its been a hard year for the music industry and entertainers in general , saw yesterday that Carrie fisher ( Princess Leia in Star Wars ) collapsed with a massive heart attack on a flight to LA and is in intensive care in hospital so we have to hope the grim reaper spares her

OK.  Enough.  No more please.  Can those feeling poorly please wait until next year now.  This is spoiling my Christmas!

Played some Quo to remember how they were.  I think Francis Rossi will keep going and I wish him well but it won't be the real McCoy.  Get down, deeper and down!

After having a heart attack and not breathing for 10 minutes, I fully expected Carrie Fisher to be on this list by now.

We drifted off topic quite a bit there..... which is understandable considering George Michael's lifestyle choices ......   {:-{

lets not forget the 4 lads in the group Viola Beach and their manager who were killed in a horrendous car crash in Sweden in February.

they might only have been young and up and coming starlets, but everyone has to start somewhere.

no drugs or alcohol was found in them at all. And they were good at what they did...sadly cut down in their prime.

but what  MORBID lot we are. It's as though we are all just hanging around waiting for the next one to fall............hope it's not me.

Jim.

Jim, I think it is a case that so many of the people who passed away this year were icons and celebrities in the correct sense. The latter word is of bandied about when it should not be. Can David Bowie and a woman with a fat posterior be compared in any way?

I suppose that rather than being morbid, we are becoming almost expectant that someone we cherished and/or respected for their contribution to our lives will pass away. Sadly people of all ages pass away wether they be infants with complications or an elder of the family, and it is the same with the people who passed away this year. Some were frankly too young and had lots more to give, while others had a great innings, and their work will be remembered with fondness. I hate the thought that Lennon was cut down in his prime, but his legacy and that of the Band he formed is larger than the individual, like Bowie, Jimmy Perry and even Kenny Baker!

The way we lost Viola Beach is so redolent of how we lost Buddy Holly. Died far too young and had such potential (Admittedly Holly was further down his career but he was by no means a long way into his career)

The list reads like ......'whos who'

However it is a little concerning :o......

So if the 2016 worlds populations births [@ or to 0700 AM on 31/12/2016] was 142,250,957, and the deaths were 59,989,594...this means for every single death, ~~2.3 replacement humans were born

Accordingly, if the RIP 2016 listing from Martin.....http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-38418802 ........were eg., if 1000 people of note ,have gone, have we replaced an equivalent number in the same 2.3% increase...ie., have 2300 replacement people of note evolved or been recognised?

I suspect not.....Derek

PS......the computer generated math on the attached page is questionable
