Post by: wrighi on January 21, 2016, 11:30:57 pm
Hi guys, I'm Chris from Florence Italy,
excuse me for my poor english, I try at my best.
I bought on ebay this Billing Boats kit in first november and now it's nearly to be finished, maybe 1-2 weeks and part of the game is end
this is the current working status

(http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m60/wrighi/fairmount%20Alpine/DSCN9984.jpg) (http://s101.photobucket.com/user/wrighi/media/fairmount%20Alpine/DSCN9984.jpg.html)

it has 37 lights, waterpump for cannon fire and bow thruster
I have around 170 photo of my boat and a long discussion in italian on another forum.
if you like I can show all here too.

Welcome to the site Chris .
There are a few of us building the Fairmount -----------, I am building mine as Alpine as is Mark T , we just need one named Experdition and we will have the full fleet , it would be good to see your way of the fire monitors and the plumbing ,or any pics come to that.

You have made a very good looking ship and I like that you have covered all the wood with a layer of cloth and resin. Some excellent modelling you have done here.

many thanks  %% i
I have used hard epoxy glue uhu endfest for many parts.
I have paint with epoxy resin all the wood including inside and the roof.
the two-component paint can't be compared to acrylic spraycans, it is very hard and even cheaper, half kilo 15 euro here in Florence.
all the work revolves around the intention to navigate at the sea.

this is bow thruster control circuit

ok, that's all..  this is my Fairmount at today.  :-)

the colors of the photos are not particularly faithful, everything seems clearer than the reality, as soon as possible will make better pictures in daylight

I took me a day to do the guillotine  >>:-( and around half an hour to cut all wood.  {-)

today I have done the anchor chainstay (correct?)  in real copper, I think that the weather and the water will give it a nice color.

If you look on Facebook in groups and look up Modelboatmayhem ,there a a few pictures of my interpretation of Fairmount Alpine . I just can not get my pictures on here however hard I try . I have just put my last crane on Saterday .

my colors are:
 s0580 g30y  green
 s0585 y40r  orange.

I use flash with may compact camera and the true color you can see only in background shadow zone, areas in the foreground are bleached

Thanks Mark , I've just discovered another slight set back with the second crane ,more buy good luck it did not happen on the first one ,glue has run onto the fixing screw so when I turn the crane to get the superstructure off the screw starts to un screw  not what I wanted ,the amount of glue I used was minute but it still caught ,so it's just a head up ,in hindsight I should have just glued the 3sides and left the side where the ram attaches .
Thank you again for sorting the pictures .

very nice job, glad to see it  :-)  how do you plan to seal and close the covers?

watching your Fairmount I concluded that my orange is wrong, already did not like the shiny, so I went to the paint shop and I did make a different matt orange, the new color is S0585Y-50R, I do not know which is the correct color of real Fairmoun but mine is too yellow.
now I paint new color and tomorrow I post some pictures.

just an ask for you, I get mad to cover the inflatable dinghy.. how have you made the tarp?

Hi Chris
The covers for the RIBs were a joint effort ,my wife is good with a needle and thread ,first the shape was cut from orange pure cotton cloth then the hem was turned to give a neet edge , I drilled 0.5 mm holes at even space round the RIB  , I then cut some links from a fine chain and my wife sew them on to the cover at the same spacing ,I glued in brass wire at one side and bent the wire into a small hook , pulled the cover tight and pushed the wire through the link with glue on it and bent them over to form very small hooks .
There is some cloth left if you would like some as a sample ,the orange paint is Humbrol Orange Gloss enamel . I have not bothered to make the superstructure water tight it's a tight fit so  I hope it will not blow off . I hope to get a silicone gasket for the work deck , I have a picture of the under side of the deck hold down , I will ask Mark T if he would kindly post it on here , you will have to let know your address if you want some cloth send by personal email .

If you don't fancy making the tarpaulin with real cloth, you could always try what the plastic kit modellers do.

Take a sheet of toilet paper brush on a coat of white wood glue (pva glue) once it is well soaked in carefully lay over your object - the rib in this case. Once it dries it becomes rigid then can be painted your colour of choice. This method allows you to form small creases in it so that it looks like a real tarpaulin, which are never quite pulled tight like a drumskin, but are rippled.

Not at all David, yours is a good method, In fact I did all the sails on my sailing trawler the same way, albeit I had to master the sewing machine as my wife just left me to it!

I just offered an alternative that is quicker - especially if you have no sewing skills! :embarrassed:

3 new Fairmount pictures with new orange color S0585-Y50R

pay no attention to small glass jars Tamiya, there are no water based colours (and glue) on my boat, I use them for few amounts of two-component paint,  they are easily cleaned and recycled

Well ...congratulations for a life like image.......I could have walking along the quayside to take this image ..excellent :-))

You may need to blot out the backwards glow of the red & green nav lights to comply with current requirements ?............

Is that each 112 degrees line of sight vision from FWD?.............Derek

There has been only a handful of photos on here (in the threads I have read, there may be more) that really could be mistaken for the real boat. You managed that with a couple of photos, well done you must be very proud!    U2

many thanks  :-) Fairmount is still not finish.. I have many things to do, also cover the top of nav lanterns and build motorized radar.
it was start 26 october 2015, three months at now.

I have to learn the better way to do writings with paint, stickers are orrible and thick but I don't know how.
before I have tried with laserprint and decals sheet but it is not what I would get

look at the front writings in this picture, for me looks terrible, if it was true the panel thickness would be of several centimeters

I know what you mean adout the decals , I had some made by a well known decal maker for my cranes and paid over £20 pounds for ,I was not impressed so might change them . I've been on with mine 3 years off and on , I am retired  so finance comes in to it ,have to save to by all the extras .
