Did anyone besides me get an email purporting to be from Jonathon at Deans Marine? It had a link that, when clicked on went to a blank screen. Now I am worried I let some span into my computer. {:-{ >>:-(

I've just deleted this person from my 'Junk' without opening the message. Never heard of him.

If it was a malicious spam email and you clicked a link on it, you might have gained something unwanted. If running Windows, do a security scan with whatever security you currently use, then grab a few free anti malware programs from majorgeeks (spywareblaster, malwarebytes etc) and scan with them - then give adwcleaner a go for any deep seated rubbish. They will probably all turn up odd bits n pieces which might or might not have anything to do with your link, but the machine should end up nice and clean.
I've been receiving some odd ones that purport to come from a distant in-law, but they are noticeably "wrong" because although the e-name is correct, the end of the address indicates that it is an Australian address, and she is not that distant.

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever ,ever open a link unless you are expecting it, even if from someone you know

Yes, I got one too, they have been hacked by the look of it.

I just got mine, from deansmarine@gnext.co.jp which on the face of it is a Japanese registration. I'm fairly sure that Deans have not moved.
The link says its pointed at http://arkansasreputationrepair.com/whom.php?dan=1c17mspf5pe6m
and in an Opera window actually goes to http://financenewsplatform.com/?sid=11756&hold=67800f16ca46cb58&dir_id=f4d047&my=bb&dest=60b&no_error=d
Which is a dud clickbait destination that pops up from various sites.
In itself that looks fairly harmless apart from the waste of time.
But if the perpetrator did it, there must be something in it for them. The question is "what"?

There's the rub Malcolm, the page may be blank but it is just a portal to get crap onto your computer for various malicious purposes. They have no interest in entertaining or assisting you and so probably would not bother to put anything pretty on that link. Meanwhile a bot is stuffing code onto your system........
Damned spammers:O(

I'm not sure that they have been hacked, just a mail address created with the same name, but in a different country - my inlaw who doesn't live in .au, and now Jonathan who has probably not moved to .jp
If used as intended by its maker, the link probably does try something unwelcome, but copying and pasting through a different browser, it just led to a duff financial advise page. As others have said, don't click links indiscriminately.

After doing a clean install of Windows 7 on my second laptop, I installed Spyware Blaster, AVG and Malwarebytes all from FILEHIPPO and FREE.
Another great tool is CCleaner which originally was called Crap Cleaner, this cleans out all you temp files etc. and fixes up the windows register.
It ask to do a backup, but, is not required(I have used it for years and never had a computer die because of CCleaner).
The ten finger virus is another problem, people installing trail software and not scanning the programs first with both Malwarebytes and AVG.

i have had a couple of emails(obviously spam) from Jonathan Bartzsch. I have been in touch via email to Jonathan Bartzsch at Deans Marine, who was quite disgusted that was trying to blame him for the messages(which i was not). I have not long come off the telephone to Deans Marine and have been informed that Jonathan Bartzsch has nothing to do with Deans Marine, and that he only has something to do with the Deans Marine forum, of which he has now banned me from, why I do not know. This has now made me a little unsure of the authenticity of this Jonathan Bartsch.

Ignore and don't open anything from him.
Deans should take him from the forum

The thing is, is it him sending the spam mail? I have been in contact with Deans, and it is
allegedly not him!!
Martin.
You know it not from Deans Marine and as explained below - Admin

Martin
Its probably not him. The email address is via a Yahoo.co.uk account, which Deans Marine use like I did until recently, and it turns out that once the yahoo account has been hacked, no matter how many times you contact yahoo, change your passwords and keep on top of your security, once every three or four months you suddenly find that some spam mail has been sent supposedly from your yahoo email account.
I too received the spam from him today but didn't open it because I know what is a spam email (like you spotted it to be too) and I accept that it goes straight into my junk email box with the rest of the rubbish.
The only way to stop the yahoo account being abused it is to delete the yahoo account and start again, like I did by moving to outlook.
Unfortunately it doesn't stop you receiving them. :((

I just find it sad that he is being informed by the public that unscrupulous people are using his name in an act of deceit and are being castigated for it for actually bringing it to his attention.
Don't shoot the messenger as a saying comes to mind.
not a nice perspective on life.
Jim.

Unfortunately even that isn't necessarily the case. E-mail addresses can be spoofed so mail can appear to come from anyone, so once a spammer has an address (they like actual, active ones) he can just keep on spoofing it.
I sometimes get e-mail from myself ... which is a bit of a giveaway :-) (It also presents a conundrum ... Do I label it as spam?)
All of which means that accusing someone of sending spam is pointless and probably false. If it's a friend or relative I'll perhaps mention that I got something odd and maybe they should check their account, but I wouldn't generally try and tackle a stranger over it.

OK, if all has now been said and done, we'll lock this one down now.
Obviously in not from Deans Marine, what would they have to gain from it?!
As been said a few times, the originator can stop spoofed or lookalike emails, you can only hope they give up after a short while.
NB. I now solely use Gmail as the Spam & malware filter seem to work very well.
There are good site checkers out there, do a search for: How to check suspicious links?
PM me if you have anything further that needs to be added.
Caveat emptor or possibly Caveclick emptor?!! %)
