Title: Acrylic over enamel?
Post by: Norman Castle on February 01, 2016, 01:41:58 PM
Sorry chaps - me again  :embarrassed:

I have a ply hull which has been brush-painted with Humbrol enamels.  Can I safely over-coat it with Tamiya acrylic after a light rubbing down?

Quite simply No

I had exactly the same issue with my Tirpitz

You need to rub it back as best you can then coat with an isolator primer or you may get reactions

This is the stuff I used on my tirpitz
I'm sure there will be people who say it'll be fine, and it may well be. BUT do you want to take the chance?

Oh poo! I've got three coats of Humbrol enamel on all dried and rubbed down, and last night I started on the camouflage-style top coats for which I wanted to use six colours.  I now find that three of the new tins are dud, which on top of other paint problems has finally finished me with Humbrol  >>:-(

I really don't fancy rubbing right back to the bare wood and I don't fancy paying over a tenner for isolator primer when I can't really use rattle cans, so I'll reluctantly go for a revised colour scheme using Humbrol tins which I know are OK.

Once this build's finished, I ditch my remaining tins of Humbrol and go 100% Tamiya acrylic for sure ...

Do you HAVE to use spray cans ?   Expensive.

There shouldn't be a problem using water/alchohol based acrylics over enamel provided the enamel is suitable "cured" (left long enough to dry!)  The problem could arise if your using aerosols.  I personally wouldn't use car paint over enamels but brushed on or air brushed hobby acrylics should be ok.  A problem you might find is getting the coverage over the base colour.
