Title: ESC Program Cards

I often see in various threads, that a Program Card is recommended for setting up a Brushless ESC. Can someone with knowledge of these, explain in laymen's terms how these things work, please?
In particular:
-Do you need a specific Program Card for a specific ESC, or are they all interchangeable?
-What do they connect to - is it just the ESC or do you plug anything else in?
-How do you use them/ go about doing the 'Programming'?

Yes you need a specific card for the controller, however, many controllers are based around the same circuit so some cards will work with several controllers.


you need the ecs, the card & a battery.


Programming is not ( should not, but you know how electronic things dont always do what they should) difficult. Would take ages to explain, but just look on youtube for using an esc programming card as a picture says 1000 words.

Sometimes the hardest part is understanding the Chinglish  %) Basically the card will have a button for each of the variables you are able to change. To my mind much easier than counting bleeps and moving a Tx control.

Hi Charlie
We use the Hobbyking car ESC's HK-30A to HK-100A with programming card HKProg-card(for 100A car ESC).
These require power to the ESC (no motor required(but insulate motor leads or with a motor connected, disconnect one lead)).
Also require servo lead connection between ESC and program card.
Turn the ESC and the program display will light up.
Setup for ESC- 1. Cut off voltage 2S =6.0, 3S = 9.0 and 4S = 12.0 volts.
                       2. Start power =10 ( a good low speed start).
                       3. Advance timing 1 or 2 for low KV motors and 3 or 4 for high KV motors.
                       4. Bi-directional mode = 2.
                       5. Brake force = 1.
                       6. Drag brake force = 0.
                       7. Neutral range = 8%(default).
                       8. Initial brake force = 5%(default).
                       9. Reverse = 1 (25% default).
  This setup cuts the brake to it lowest settings and with the 25% reverse good slow speed.

Thanks for all of the replies chaps. I have been having a look at some tutorial videos on YouTube, but to be honest the ones i've seen are a bit rubbish. Will keep looking though {:-{
