Just before Christmas I acquired a partly started Deans PBR "Cannedheat" it's a pre 2011 kit as it had the old instruction.
First step was to contact Deans for a updated build instruction which was mailed to me within a day :-))
The kit was started, meaning many pieces was cut out including the hull, this was not done that good so I have had to fix some issues on the way to make everything fit.
I have chosen to fit a BL motor instead of the 385 type recommended in the kit.
I started out with the reinforcement of the edge of the hull

Shaft and rudder assembly attached and aft deck in place. Motor is a Graupner BL 260Z 1380KV

The front 2X .50Cal MG turret is assembled

And I found that the front part of te hull was cut too low so I had to add material on top for the last 100mm.

I too will be watching this build with interest. Dean's do very well thought out kits.
So nice of Ron to send you the build instructions for something someone else bought and only partly started. Customer Service indeed :}

And some paint added, did have some challenges with my airbrush MAX DH-125 as it clogs up changed to mu old Badger 150 and it works.

Nice to see a few M60s as well as the ubiquitous .50 Cals Tica :-)) You have leapt ahead with progress. Are you crewing her?

And I do have some crew laying around and expect to add those in due time.
Next step is to tackle the supports for the tarpaulin, I'll do that in 1mm brass rode and see how it goes.

Good idea Tica. That will allow you to solder any braces or eyes to the hoops making them stronger.

Well one step up and 5 back that's apparently the story with this build >>:-(
For the last 4-6 years I have used Valejo paint including primer with good results in combination with a lacquer from Belton. Did the bottom and sides in one go and then the deck and what happened the paint on the deck cracked <:(
This is beyond my understanding. The primer and colour has been added in one go and is from the same bottles. The lacquer used is the same can for both jobs ?
Well just have to strip the deck and redo it :o

Hi you are doing a grand job .I scratch built a 1/12 scale pbr there are photos of it on the mayhem at wicksteed park 2018 .Have a look it's 38 in long and 14 ins beam cheers John V

I am pretty much a beginner with model boats, but I am thinking about getting one of these kits.
Does anyone have any thoughts please as to whether this kit is reasonably straightforward, or very challenging for a beginner?

I would not recommend it for a newbie and more or less not recommend it at all, most of the white metal fittings is not worth much, so for a nice result you have to redo a lot of them in thin brass and styrene/ABS.
This one is right now waiting for me to take the challenge and do the canopy.
And this build is also a bit worse than buying a new kit from Deans as this one was a partly started kit with a lot of extra challenges.
