Title: Good Old Outlook Express: computer stuff
Post by: xrad on February 21, 2016, 01:01:56 am
Tip for anyone in the same predicament:

With several windows upgrades behind me, now at 10.2, I lost the ease and functionality of Outlook Express  several win gens ago.  Real shame as it was one of my favorite programs.  The current 2013 office email version seems to have upgraded/transformed/mutated into something else and I did not want to purchase an upgrade for Office and buy a subscription just to get outlook back, or join a cloud, or give my email to another mail server, or use win live mail......WT*!?

So I dug into my old files and found a 2003 copy of MS Office with a 2005 update.  Sooooo...

I installed the whole 2003 office suit, dug through the files to find OE, and moved it to the desktop. Then, with a few clicks pop3, stmp, port settings,  Norton security etc..I was able to install the ooooold version of OE and for the first time in years, see my email with the click of a button on my desktop without having to join a cloud or use windows live mail.....  Nice that email is basically prehistoric in code...that was probably the reason I could never get my email net location to work with the newer windows...

You can see from the screenshot the old and new action dates and the file location in 32bit x86 from Win 7!

all is good right now... :)

The reason is that everyone has watched the direction Apple have moved in (centric based) and realised they need to capture their share of the market, hence microsoft with v10 are tying you into all of their brands.

xrad,

That looks like Outlook and not Outlook Express.

You're right Outlook Express is great which I am still using.

Use Thunderbird also but it is not a patch on Outlook Express.
Mine is on my Windows XP Pro machine whilst Thunderbird is on My Win7 machine.

No prizes for which is best.

Microsoft Live Mail 2012 gets me as close to Outlook Express as I need to be on Win 7. Don't know if it works with W10 when I eventually upgrade, but if Outlook 2003 does, then I guess I'll be OK. And I have Outlook as a fallback anyway.

I don't know about everyone else, but there must be a market for an operating system that easy to upload, install and run old software on without the bloated offerings that MS give - but looks like MS acts similar but better than MS, more securer than MS, but isn't MS.

MS to me is like its medically named counterpart, jerky and prone to leaking.

I prefer win 7, though it does have its foibals, but I don't want this new winx as its draconian, George orwellan and quite frankly bound to be a bad thing as its supplied by MS. I really am unsure about the Linux os's as I don't know what they are like or capable of.

Correction, it is just Outlook. Very old outlook, but works great.  I really liked Win 7 point whatever...and I used XP without any major issue for years.

The new operating system in the desktop, pad, phone whatever are all completely advertising based with cross-links to everything capitalist. But I do like Win 10. Security seems better and more hidden in the background. I did have to put "Cortana" to sleep 'permanently' by hiding her initiating file  ...heheheh.. :-)) ...Oh my she was soooooo annoying!  And I did remove countless garbage windows from the desktop 'pad.'  And I did go through all the files and deleted anything I did not need like anything MSN.

Used to be you could buy the os without all the crap and wipe a store bought computer with the install, not any more.

Nice to have back a mail system that is easy to use and really does 'Block' senders when I want it to.

I still find the biggest problem is the service provider spam filters are filtering other stuff too, every couple of months I have to go in and turn them off again.

Outlook from office 2007 is about the oldest version that I know of, that is still
compatible with the latest versions of Windows.

If you read through all the blurb it says you can still upgrade to the last xp service pack but if you follow the links there are none. If you try to download newer stuff it's says it's not comparable and sends you back to the original link. Xp is still being upgraded by MS as it's in use by the us military  but you need a special code!

There was a patch available that makes windows update think the OS is an EPOS terminal and then allows the updates on XP to continue

Yes there was an article in one of the local (Aussie) PC mags, that Millions have been paid by US Defence, to keep XP going for quite some time.
There are also other business that are paying to keep XP supported also, they wont use Win7 onwards.

So why are we mere mortals changing when they, (AKA MS), say change???.

I understand that from my first pc pre pentium by a long way that chip archetecture has changed from 8 bit to 64 but.......but this is a win xp at 32 bit and a good 2.4ht processor. There should be no reason why it cannot upgrade to vista or even 7 basic. Especially as these will not be supported so let older users upgrade for free!

So why are we mere mortals changing when they, (AKA MS), say change???.
Hardware makers keep upping the capabilities of the hardware and adding new ones to sort out perceived shortcomings in the existing stuff.  Systems developers immediately use this extra capability.  Software designers look at both and use everything available.  So it starts over again.  Most of this is driven by the games industry whose customers always want more (better pictures, more frames per second, cleverer plot handling etc), but many "real" programs follow on and do the same.
The military and the financial institutions tend to feel that they don't want to replace equipment that works until they really, really, have to.  Run of the mill office installations (like much of the military and government offices) feel that it is best to have one working system rather than a bit here and a bit there in a perpetual state of changeover.
Fit-and-use-for-life things like ATMs - they would probably do their job quite adequately under DOS, but became common at the same time as XP.  Since their job has not changed - show a display, register key presses, communicate with head office, work the cash dispenser - there is little need to change a working machine until they reach the end of their useful mechanical life.  Any improvements would probably be greeted with hostility by the customers, even if they were actual improvements.

Since MS mucked up OE several years back when they stopped it being compatible with hotmail and replaced it with Live which had serious shortcomings, I moved to Thunderbird.  For what I want, it works very well.

As much as I hate to say it, Windows LiveMail is pretty good.
Much slower than Outlook Express but not too dramatically different.
( only download the bits you want )

I run Mozilla's Thunderbird email software. Works very well, is cross platform compatible, and not bloated up. I also use their Firefox browser.

For most uses Linux is great. Where it tends to fall down is multimedia use e.g. video editing, CAD, music and gaming. If you use your computer for those things you're still better off with either Apple or Microsoft operating systems, as the software is just a whole lot better than what you can get for Linux.

I use the Livemail in windows 10, good enough but as said before a bit slow.
Years ago I used Incredimail, anyone else?

might have to go and down load it just to see if its any good still.

I've just taken delivery of a little-used Fujitsu desktop running XP Pro. It's perfect for my old CAD and photo-editing software - which won't run properly on >XP machines - and cost me nothing. It had done less than 200 hours running (in a training suite) but was destined for the skip because it wouldn't run the latest version of the company's accounting software. This is a classic case of software developments chasing available hardware resources chasing software developments ad infinitum.

So Microsoft don't support XP any more? So what? Replacing AutoCAD, Photoshop and CorelDRaw with their current versions would have cost me arms and legs, and I would have had to re-learn how to use them all. It reminds me somehow of NASA spending millions of bucks to develop a ball-pen which would write in zero gravity, while the Russians just bought a box of pencils instead...

Liz and I both use G-Mail, having had various others fall over or let us down over the years.  When it screws up (or I get totally hacked off with Google) we'll change to something else. Looks like there's a lot of choice out there.

We could always go back to prestel or compuserve
My first email address was on compuserve and was a string of numbers

Correct, am in the same boat.
Constantly being told, update browser here for latest version and then theer is nothing there.
Wrote to a few companies about browser problems and they all basically said sorry it was out of their hands.

Remember reading that the only reason win 7 etc won't run on old machines is because MS have disabled recognition of old chip series.
Something to do with the numbering, 486 series, a bit above my head

Look back at replies #17 and #21.
It works like this -
1 New systems need more powerful chips.
2 When the more powerful chips are available, programmers find ways to use the power
3 Go to 1
Repeat until skint.

on my vista laptop I had several programs stop working when it automatically upgraded internet explorer to ie9, this changed the way vista did things and stopped the programs working as they were then no longer compatible. I had to roll back to IE8 and block the ie9 update and then they were fine again.
the alternative is to use a different browser, firefox or google chrome are ok, but then windows can be fussy and only download updates using iinternet explorer. dont try and unload internet explorer though as it is an essential part of the windows operating system.
