Title: Man from ( with) Robbe Atlantis
Post by: GOGSAMWE on May 29, 2006, 09:59:35 am
hi,

I am currently building a Robbe Atlantis Twin Masted Gaff Schooner,
I am recording the build, ( warts, c*ck ups and all) on my little blogger diary, If you are interested click here..... http://ukatlantisbuilder.blogspot.com/

I am about a third into the build, but am in no rush, the long horrible winter took its toll.. that and getting my new bigger shed into place? ;)

She ( my Atlantis ) is not perfect, by any means...... but wherever I can, I am trying to improve on the original kit.....sort of kit building ,outside of the box..... but what the heck......I am happy with it......and thats all that matters. :D

I have also gleaned as much as I can find on the www, about the Robbe Atlantis, and? owners, wherever they may be, in one place
again, my little contribution, to the world wide web community.

If you know of any more builders /owners, please send me a PM .. I will be more than happy to add the details to my little web site Robbe Atlantis Resource Centre, which I hope, other owners /builders /prospective builders will enjoy and find useful.

Advice, is as always appreciated..... I dont think I am getting any better as a modeller, just improving at covering my c*ck ups up ! ;D

For the record here are her specs?
It IS BIG !

Specification:
Overall length : 1380mm (54.3 in.)
Overall beam: 340mm (13.4 in.)
Draught: approx. 240 mm (9.4in.)
Overall height: 1730mm (68 in.)
Main mast height: 1420mm (56 in.)
Standard sail area: 85.5 dm2
(Sail area with Genoa: approx. 114 dm2

Overall displacement: approx. 17.5 kg (38.5 lbs.)
Ballast keel: approx. 11 kg (22.4 lbs)

Cheers Rats ;)

The timber came from http://www.modellingtimbers.co.uk/4520.html

Keith Jewell is the guy here, one of the nicest? people you could ever wish to meet , very knowledgable,? full of practical advice, and the quality of his timbers and machining is the very best you would want.

All cut bespoke to your personal requirements for a very reasonable cost.

He really is a "Jewel"? like? a true diamond...... a rare find...... :)

I am just a very happy customer.

Hi Roy,

I am afraid I can't be much help, I am only at the hull stage of my build.. so I havent started the "knitting" myself yet ! ;D

However, I see, my pal Taylor Sparks, has responded to you in another thread... he has a wealth of  experience in these winch /knitting issues ! I am confident he will be able to sort you out. ;)

good luck

Steve ;)

This long weekend has allowed me to progress a little more on the Atlantis hull.

Decided on the paint scheme... always a personal choice this is  ;D

Particularly, as the Robbe Atlantis is a semi -scale model, and based on no specific prototype, its pretty much "whatever you want & floats your boat " ;)

Anyway, I have chose all white  for the hull..... with a subtle twin stripe along the water line..

Fully prepped and sprayed  this is how she looked earlier today.

I think the white will contrast very nicely with the timbers I have used on her deck.

The final pic shows her with the bulwark strip fitted. This is temporarily fixed with screws...

It's taken best part of a week to paint this Atlantis monster ! ;D

But the bulwark strips are now secured in position, screws removed,  holes& gaps filled.

Now sprayed up and left to cure...

I am now thinking/researching a name for her... can't simply call her "Atlantis " can I ? ;)

Which will also give me some work to do, making my own decals for her..
( I loike that , I does ) :D

Here's a few more pics ( in daylight !! ) I am very pleased with how she's coming along.

Many Thanks Roy  ;)

A little more progress made today, anchor and winch added, and railing assembly started.

The next stage involves feeding some 1mm brass wire through the lower stanchion holes and cut to length and soldered.
However, the fun ( NOT) really starts with the top rail.

For some odd reason ( presumably strength ?) Robbe have supplied 1.5mm spring steel..

This is a ridiculously hard material to a) bend , b) cut and c) solder !
Cutting can only be done with an electric cutting disc... bending requires immense strength... and if you get that far... you won't be able to solder it to the brass stanchions anyway

I just don't see the need for this.. so I intend to order some 1mtr lengths of brass rod, to replace the upper railings.

At least , I shall then be able to cut, bend, and solder them !

I shall have to "jump" a little further along with the instructions, until the brass rod arrives

Oh yes, and once again, my Japanese Tamiya mechanics ( this time in 1/20) are press-ganged into service..

Meet "Otto" my Atlantis inspector  ;D

Despite his "greyness" he really isn't that old.... probably still a member of Gogs though ;D

Steve,

Is the hull timber or composite, it looks to be a very nice style of boat..

Roy,

Its A robbe kit...   blown ABS moulded, really thick though... of their own material called "plura".

Its quite an old model... instructions and some of the materials could do with updating ( IMHO)
But I think she will  look and do the "biz" when completed.

Jackie @ Model Slipway has come to my rescue.. with some brass rod in long lengths.. I shall collect them from the Warwick show in November.. this will allow me to crack on with a nicer part of the build... the superstructures,in the interval till then. ;)
