Hi All, I was fascinated to find this in the backyard of a shop in Malvern. I thought it might be useful on the front lawn to repel cold callers but couldn't find a price. :}
-
Here is another view and the plate.

Would make a fitting forecourt monument to any Returned Services Club grounds :-))......[in OZ they are called the [Returned Services League]..... and many have Army or Navy similar sized gun mounts in the front lawns or Club foyers ...
Although sadly it appears that someone has taken his [literally] too far .....Derek

Forget guns.
Melbourne RSLs go for aircraft
Several of them also have excellent models of warships.
H.M.A.S. Sydney is popular

Derek,
On the subject of an appropriate place of display for a gun, have to say the internal display would be more suitable.
What is forgotten by non gunners, is that the gun is the colours of the Artillery hence, when guns are paraded they are accorded a Royal.
Therefore a gun in a closed well maintained environment is the same as laying up colours in a church.
It saddens gunners to see guns out there, that are not maintained and left to rust away.
Others would not allow that to happen to their colours.

A lovely old 12pdr which should be saved.

Thanks for all those replies from the other side of the world and the information. The plate (sorry about the quality of the picture, I only had my phone with me at the time) shows a date of 1939 and it appears to be a MK IX. I am still puzzled as to why it is where it is as Malvern is about as far from the sea as you can get. Cheers Graham

It is possible that the gun's history is in some way linked to DERA (as was), which was based in Malvern.
-
Yes I did wonder about the link to Dera but thought most of their work was related to radar and aircraft. :-))
-
There weren't many big guns at RSRE when I was there...
-
That gun has been at Harpers Bazaar for at least 20 years that I know of. I seem to remember that Lawrence the owner once told me that it came from a defunct sea cadet group, but I can't swear to it.
-
How ever it found it's way to Malvern (Though I suspect that it was intended for the local Sea Cadets circa 1945) Efforts should be made to preserve it. Enough of our naval history finds it's way into the scrapyard and this piece shouldn't go the same way. Perhaps one of the maritime museums would be interested. The 12 pdr served with distinction on Armed Trawlers and Mine Sweepers.
-
could do with that on our little fishing boat, would probably sink it tho' ;)
