Title: Sparky conundrum. Irregular electrics.

This is a bit of a wild question.


I have a Chinese wiring conundrum.
I have a dust extractor unit, 220v AC. The machine was originally 380v but has been converted by the manufacturer.


There are two wires coming out of it. One brown, one black.


How do I wire a plug?
1/ regards color if anyone knows Chinese electrics.
2/ to live and neutral or live and earth?


Apart from throwing a circuit breaker, can I damage any of the electrics in the machine if I get it wrong?

Yes, but it is Sunday night. We can't get the engineers.


We phoned the seller. Who told us that black was negative and red was positive. Not much help there. %)


I also need to know if I can damage the capacitor if I wire the thing incorrectly. If yes I will wait. If no, I can do trial and error.


Unfortunately, made in China sold in China is not the same as made in China sold in EU/US/Aus  {:-{

If it has only two wires then it's single phase, and I assume that it was made for use in China so the frequency of the mains will be correct (50Hz, same as the UK). I would go for Brown to Line and Black to Neutral. The suppressor capacitor should be OK.

AC goes +-+-+-+- all the time, so polarity doesn't actually matter for the 'guts'.
The only consideration really is that if it has a single pole switch that ought to be in the live wire otherwise when turned off the 'guts' will still be live.
Absent definitive info I'd go with DM as that is closest to our mains colour conventions.

Modern wiring colours are
brown - live
black or blue - neutral
green or green/yellow - earth
