I have ordered my next tug build which is a ASD Tug from MMB, it comes as a semi kit and should arrive by the end of next week. The kit comes with 45mm nozzles but as I want it for towing these he is going to replace with 50mm, I am looking at fitting 555 high torque motors driving 50mm 4 blade brass props so it should be fine with lots of power, your thoughts on this set up So all I can add for now is watch this space.
Regards Dave.

Hi Dave i used all the origanal bits on my one and she works great they are a lovely tug to build to.
-
Not sure about the 50mm Korts and props for towing especially with the size of the boat, I have 70mm Korts on my tugs with either a pair of T12's or scooter/fan motors these tugs are very powerful. If you contact one of the guys from Balne moor (competition this weekend on sunday) they are really helpful. Good luck.
Regards,
Faz. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Hi Faz, I spoke to Mark when I placed the order and he said when he built his it was taken to Balne moore and it towed the San George around with his standard set up no problem, so I should be ok with the set up I have now gone for as motors and props have now been ordered. Time will tell. :-)) :-)) :-)) And yours looks very good john and on standard set up too......Does it pull ok.
Regards Dave.

Hi Ray, No mate once I have made my mind up I go full out, I have to keep my mind active or I would go nuts with boredom....not much fun being stuck in a wheelchair so I get my wife to throw me in my shed and I'm happy as long as the supply of coffee keeps coming. Thanks John so I should be fine with a 50mm set up running on 12 volts. :-)) :-)) :-))
Regards Dave.

Hi Dave. I bought the ASD in your pictures from Mark and have no problems towing with it. It's even better for free handling being very manoueuvrable due to it having independent kort nozzles. Thoroughly recommended.

It will all depend on what goes on with getting my leg sorted.....with the way things are going I don't think anything will happen for a long while yet with these strikes the Doctors keep having my op will be put on the list like everyone else.
Regards Dave.

No pressure there then Dave, good luck with the build.

Ok made a start, first job was to mark out were the korts were they were to be located. Once I was happy and the measurements were checked again and again two 5mm holes were drilled. Once the korts were lined up they were fixed in place with P38 filler, this has now been left to fully harden I will then go over them again with Fast glass resin.
Regards Dave.
-
First holes are always the worst, looking good tho'
-
No expert on these matters but is that car body filler holding in your Kort nozzles? Some people say it is not waterproof and allso weak. Just a thought but a nice build log by the way, regards, Dave.
-
Yes, it is car body filler. You are correct, it is not waterproof which is why MD will go over it with resin.
It is useful for the first fix because it goes off nice and fast.

Hi Dave, I will be going over the filler with resin mate... I have always fitted them this way and up to now I have never had any problems. I would think we all do things different and I'm sure others will let us know there way of doing this part of the build. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
Regards Dave.
-
Did you not get one of marks fantastic Hawaii shirts?
I thought he supplied one with each purchase.
Nice looking tug Dave
Defo watching the build.
-
Okey dokey Dave, just an observation, looking forward to this build, allways fancied this kit myself, regards, Dave.

Regards Dave.

Hi all, I have now fitted the prop-shafts and again these have been fixed with P38 filler and I have gone over the filler on the Kort fixing points and the shafts with a good lashing of Resin so there will be no chance of any water getting in at these points. I will take some photo's later as I had to get of the shed before I got to high. :-))
Regards Dave.
-
Ahh! Saturday afternoon snorting resin fumes, what could be better. :-))

Ok like I said the shafts are in and props on just to make sure all is well, I am now waiting on the couplings to arrive and I can then fit the motors in place. I also have the servo box to make and fit this at the same time....it's coming along.
Regards Dave.
-
Looking good Dave :-)) let me have your email and i will send you the pictures.

They will be a great help John, thanks again mate. :-)) :-)) :-))
Regards Dave.

Ok today I cut out the 8 windows on the lower accommodation block, as you can see I drilled some holes to start with and then moved onto the file.... a slow job but not one that cannot be rushed. I then made a start on the main deck supports while I wait for the bits I ordered to arrive...hopefully tomorrow I can the get the motors in and then carry on with the rest of the deck supports. Coming along slowly.
Regards Dave.
-
Hi all, I have been looking at the other builds of this kit and noticed that there has been no wash ports cut out, is this just down to the builder or is there another reason.
Regards Dave,
-
I think you are right i have seen a couple with them done , looking good :-)) .
-
Coming along slowly.
Regards Dave.
You're coming along nice and steady Dave - looking forward to more of the same. :-))
(my build is hardly moving at all - must get myself motivated)
Regards,
Ray.

Hi Ray, come on mate get that motivation going.....the weather is picking up your new build needs to be on the water. :-)) :-)) :-))
Best Regards Dave.

Hi all, I have now got the motors fitted in place along with the servo. I have gone for 2mm brass rod for all the servo to kort and then from kort to kort, I know some will think this is a bit on the heavy side but what I have decided to do is beef up everything at the stern as I am going to take a chance on a sealed one piece deck.....no hatches on the stern....The reason being to keep all water from entering the hull as it can be a bit choppy here at New Brighton so when it's towing from the Bow there is a high risk of water splashing over the stern. Also I have now fitted most of the deck supports so tomorrow I intend getting them finished and move on to fitting the electrics ready for the test tank...ok the bath...Will take some photo's of the progress tomorrow. :-)) :-)) :-))
Regards Dave.
-
I think wash ports are a no-brainer if you have a choppy lake.
Water swilling around the deck with nowhere to go but inside
if there are no ports to send it overboard.
Ned

Yes I have to agree Ned, wash ports will be going in mate. :-)) :-)) :-))
Regards Dave.
-
Dave,
Cut out the wash ports please! after waiting since December last year the last few days of sunshine and warmth has allowed me to take out and lower down the roof lights in my shed (they were fitted with a 2 inch upstand but unfortunately this caused a water holding valley) to cure the minor capillary action dripping leak that had become a P.I.T.A. Water will always go to the lowest point so wash ports are a deffo. Nice to see you are progressing keep up the good work.
Cheers,
Faz. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Hi Faz, will do mate thanks. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
Regards Dave.
-

Windows...... I will have a go at them tomorrow John, I hate doing windows but they will have to be done. I have decided to change the look of the wheelhouse a bit and yet still undecided as to fitting a bow thruster. :-))

Hi Paul, yes its a nice handy size my idea is I can carry this around as and when I have bad days with my leg. But as you can see I have a long way to go before this one gets to see any water. :-)) :-)) :-))
Regards Dave.
-
my take on these models, does it matter how long it takes if you enjoy it just relax and it takes as longs as it takes
I've just started a restoration on a smit rotterdam where the paint was all cracked infact after sanding it back this morning it turns out it was the filler originally done 38 years ago that was cracked anyway all sanded this morning back to bare wood, and currently the sealer is drying

Hi Paul. sounds like a big job you have on your hands..... Good luck hope it all goes well. :-)) :-)) :-))
Regards Dave.
-
Thanks Dave,
It won't be as nice as yours, I'm not as good at modelling as most on here :( but I will do a reasonable job (I hope {:-{ ) It's a bigger job than I should have started with as I've not built a boat for 25+ years but I got a nice sized boat very cheap so fingers crossed.
Thanks Paul
Look forward to all the updates on your boat
-
Hi all, just a quick update...... I have not done anymore on the tug due to me getting a new false leg and at the moment it's quite painful to wear. But hopefully things will settle down soon I hope and I can get back to working on it soon.
Regards Dave.
-
Looks great Dave my running gear for mine only arrived last week :-)
-
Hi.
Like your thread on this build you have answered a lot of my questions before I need to ask them.
I am just getting back into model boating.
With limited time and only the garden to use as a workshop for larger jobs, do you think this is a good project ?
It looks fairly straight forward as a build and reasonably affordable with fittings ect included with the hull.
Of coarse I know running gear motors and so forth will be extra.
