Fun for all
-
As no one else will put it up......and I hot accused of doing last year's too early........

... and it Bank holiday the next day! :-))
HOSTED BY WICKSTEED PARK MODEL BOAT CLUB
Fun, frolics, penguins, boats, tea, teeth, BBq's and other Mayhem!
Join the Mayhem fanatics at Wicksteed Park, Kettering for a weekend of sailing. Friendly atmosphere, good company and some seriously good boats that see the water! Advice freely given, tea and coffee freely drunk, no serious competitions and good weather every year (chuckle).
Parking is 70yds from the lake,
Wicksteed Park charge for parking. See website for current prices.
BUT MAYHEM IS FREE.........TOTALLY FREE......
so if you feel like a change of scene, come down and have a sail.....that's what it's all about!

Taking into account the concerns about access for the disabled, it isn't that far from the carpark to the lakeside via a gate across the railway line on pretty good going. The quality of Wicksteed members and attendees assures you that someone will help launch/recover your boat.
Looking forward to next years already but the Travelodge calendar does not go as far ahead as May 2017 so I cannot book my room yet!
-
Are these dates confirmed for next 2017?
-
Not as yet, we usually get them fully confirmed after Christmas. :-))
-
Hallo we are from Germany and will visit the Mayhem weekend. We need some more information, must we register us somewhere? We hope we can stay on a campside nearby und have two nice days with our subs there. :-)
www.beutels.de
-
There is no need to register. WICKSTEED park has a campsite but please wait till end of january as we might get a discount. We will endeavour to put as much info up As soon as we know.
Those who do camp have a very friendly disposition and we normally on the Saturday night have a communal BBQ where everyone e throws good in the middle and some poor sap cooks it all for you.
-
Hi and welcome
The organising of the mayhem weekend and the relevant discounts are well in progress and we will get all the confirmed information from Wicksteed Park management after Christmas/New Year period as its one of their busiest times at the moment but all is going well. :-))
We should get the same discount as last year and same camping location in the campsite.
As soon as the New Year holiday is over I'll get the information sent out on the forum.
Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year everyone.
-
Thanks Nick,
And thanks too to all your club members for making us feel so welcome.
Bob
-
Well whatever the dates steamboatapprentice and I will be there (assuming a certain persons sloe gin has not killed me off {-) ) and next time we are bringing over our brew, so watch out lads north of the boarder......you know who you are %% %%

Good to hear from you Phil, I've booked my leave already so I don't miss out, only just though, come back from ops only a week before!!! Next year's batch of sloe flavoured beverage is currently brewing for everyone to share.

-

Providing Beale Park is not the same weekend I may invest in a small tent. If you can wait that long Dave I can bring you the "Four Ships Arrived" Thames Tug. Swap for some bacon butties ?
-
HI Bob. I can arrange cooking g facilities. You just bring your tent and food etc. I can even supply the chef!
Don't forget sat night is BBQ night. I normally pop to the local shop on sat and get the food.
-
Lets get this sorted early this.... for next year:
What featured model boat event should we run for 2017?
-
Hmmm I know Nick would like to carry on victoriana / wwi
Some different ideas
Solar powered craft
Submarines
Aircraft carriers
Coastal craft
Inland waterway craft
Plastic magic
Pre 20th century sailing ships and steam ships
-
Semi submersibles ?
-
Additional .... Maybe thinking about something we could all build or take part in with our existing boats. :-)
-
Hello,
Soon as we all arrive, start practicing for a "Sail By" for as many boats as we can get on the water.
Needs to be on video for posterity !!!!.
John. :-))

no submarines then?! %)

Ps beale park is the 1st bank holiday in may I think
-
Ps beale park is the 1st bank holiday in may I think
That's the rumour I've heard too.
I think a massive photo get together of mayhem members with their boats to celebrate over ten years of Mayhem with Martin in the middle will have to happen!
A simple challenge would be good too so members can use their current boats regardless of what they are.
-
How about making free sailing paper boats? Waterproofing is optional! @
-
That's a brilliantly different idea that's cheap and cheerful.
We could have a race from one side of the lake to the other and back again! :-))
-
It's free sailing mate. It will go round in a 5ft circle!
-
How about a regatta involving odd or unique vessel designs? Between us, Bob K and I can hopefully put two out of the ten 'Bizarre ships' from the John Currie book of that name, namely Novgorod and Polyphemus. There are cylindrical ships and jointed ships amongst others described. The Whinnan family were mad for cigar ships.
-
Hi everyone
Organising is going well with a meeting to sort out the final details with the park management in the next couple of weeks.
Keep an eye in the March issues of Model Boats and Marine Modelling International for our news bulletin.
Looking forward to this brilliant weekend as it'll be one of my first back in the UK after right weeks of hard work. :-))

Not that I would ever be able to attend due to distance and health, but I would love to see lots of lifeboats on the pond in photographs, on this forum. the more the better, and of all ages.[ and video downloads as well] please, of the weekend and all the fun you guys have.
thank you.

Hi,
The Model Hovercraft Association has just had its first committee meeting and decided that we will be attending Mayhem at Wicksteed this year (probably one day only unless we can drum up enough support), so looking forward to meeting you all!
Cheers,
Jason

Hi everyone
Good news from the Wicksteed Park end of the organising :-))
As promised we have the park to thank for a £10 off per night discount from Thursday night to Monday morning for those wishing to camp in the park's campsite. To redeem this discount when booking through the reception (phone number tel:01536 512475) please quote that you are with the 'Model Boat Mayhem'and they will automatically discount the money for you. Please don't use the online booking form as these will not work. This discount equates to approx 33-45% discount depending on the night.
We will have the same camping position as last year just inside the entrance to the camp and immediately to the left.
We will have some new tables to play with but it will be for those who can't fit a table(s) in their vehicle.
If you can please bring a table, many thanks ok2
We will also have 30 new chairs for our weary legs for the weekend too.
There will be due to popular demand a tombola stand with some good prizes and a bring and buy table too.
And a newly refurbished shelter and jetty will also be in use.
Hope to see you there! :-))
-
That is kind to provide tables for those without them or big enough vehicles.
-
Hi, are dogs allowed in the camping area/show?
Thanks, Dale
-
Top Stuff Nick!
Well done that man!
-
Hi Dale
I'll double check for the campsite but dogs are allowed in the park.
-
Dogs - Dogs must be kept on leads at all times no matter how small or sweet natured.
Please clean up your dog’s mess after you – it is a serious public health hazard.
Dogs are not allowed in the children’s play areas. Please observe the signs.
-
Taken from the campsite pdf

Thanks Klunk :-))

You'll have to hang on for a bit longer, Phil...mine is very much still in the early stages. I have the hull (built by Ray Sparkes, a copy of "Mona"), a beautiful brass fuel tank, again made by Ray, the engine mounting plate, and a couple of alloy props.
I'm saving all my loose change for a motor for it...it will have a Saito .120 four stroke in it, a lovely looking engine, and really looks "vintage".
-
OK, so...
1. What models are you bringing to Wicksteed this year?
2. Are you building anything new?
3. Will it be ready on time?!

Hello,
We have lots of different sized yachts at the Mayhem Event.
Normally yacht races are set up for yachts all of the same size, or class.
Bigger yachts are usually faster than small yachts.
But there are ways of racing different sized yachts together !!.
All of the yachts set off together.
All the yachts are timed how long they took to finish the course.
The fastest yacht starts the next lap LAST !!!.
The slowest starts FIRST !!!.
All of the other boats start according to their finishing time.
Any BIG changes in times can be adjusted to keep things in order.
The Birkenhead and Fleetwood Clubs use this method - - I have sailed in races using it and it works !.
It all works a treat !, after the first race - - also timed, corrections can be made to the start times for following races.
John. :-))
-
I hope to be bringing the paddle steamer and also the tamar lifeboat, and I'll bring the Britannia sailing yacht as a display item as it's not in sailing condition as it hasn't got sails.
-
Is there.an actual programme of events or is it just a free for all on the water? It all sounds a bit disorganised at the moment.
A published timetable for the two days would be helpful.
Colin
-
Hi Colin
As usual most of the actual sailing will be free sailing however events (for example the WW1 battle fleet from last year) will have times agreed on the day and announced over the PA system to clear the lake to allow these events to be seen effectively and safely. A section of the lake is sectioned off for smaller boats for example plastic magic boats to use without interference from normal or larger sized models.
There is a frequency control board in the Mayhem tent to have a central control point of the radios.
-
Just remeber Phil if you loose your teeth then you can allways borrow mine and versa visy {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)
shudder shudder brrrrrrrrrrrrr
Dave
-
Regimentation has never worked at the Mayhem event it is all about fun not regimented flipping timetables
.
Dave
-
Thanks Nick,
I must confess that I lean towards building rather than sailing these days. To be honest, after half an hour or so I find free sailing a bit boring although I accept it is the norm now. It's a while since I have been to Wicksteed as I am not usually free that weekend and I wondered how things are run these days. My models are scale, on the small side and fragile and when I last visited I didn't like to put them on the water along within the much faster and larger boats rushing around. The introduction of a 'safe area' is a good idea and I'm sure is appreciated.
I don't know if I will be free this year either and my drive to Wicksteed involves negotiating half of the M25 in both directions which inevitably means spending a lot of time in traffic jams, especially on a holiday weekend.
In my younger days I was happy to drive all over the country to MPBA steering events but today's road conditions are rather a deterrent and there seem to be very few steering course regattas now which is what used to really interest me.
I will make up my own mind nearer the time but I am sure it will be a great event for all who attend.
Colin
-
Pitch up, bring a boat! :P
( Scheduled could expanded a little I guess! )
Is there.an actual programme of events or is it just a free for all on the water? It all sounds a bit disorganised at the moment.

Colin
-
OK, OK, if you are thinking of coming, who's interested in what?
( In no particular priority ... )
1. Free sailing?
2. Scale sale? ( Not sure what that actually means! )
3. Yacht races?
4. Springer tugs?
5. Club 500?
6. Tug type events?
7. Steering competition?
8. Blind Steering competition?
9. Straight running?
10. Tethered Hydro
11. Multi Racing
12. RC Warship Combat
13. Anything too fast, very noisy, dangerous, illegal, etc, etc!
14. Fun boat competition?
15. Concours de Elegance?
......... what else?
Martin
-
I think you have put your finger on it there Martin. In my view, whether I come or not(!), there should indeed be a mixture of free sailing plus themed sessions but if you attempt too many then none of them will be done properly! Each one needs a bit of organisation and you shouldn't spread yourself too thin in this respect.
If you have a steering course then that has to be set out and presumably the Wicksteed club will have to provide the obstacles. Nick has already said that part of the lake will be partitioned off for small models and it would make sense to fit the steering course into this and designate that area for 'sedate' models rather than just small ones. This would give the opportunity for people to test their skills in handling their scale models. Making it competitive would add to the organisational overhead so maybe drop that but it is still fun to steer round obstacles and carry out dockings etc. to show how well the models can be controlled as opposed to driving battleships around free sailing at 50+ scale knots!
Tug towing is always popular and maybe this could be done around the steering course mentioned above.
Springers - these are associated with things like water football. Might be worth a punt but only if enough are present.
I think Phil Abbott and Dave Jones have got straight running pretty well organised in the past so just give them some sessions to organise and oversee.
It sounds like a 'Warship Parade' would be popular so maybe some sessions dedicated to warships showing off their paces around the free sailing area.
Yacht races and Club 500 races need to be properly organised and run so would need to be sorted out in advance with people to be responsible for them. Not something you can really muddle through on the day and they also require a fair bit of time which could eat into the time for other activities. The amount of interest needs to be established before the event to see if it is worth running.
Scale sail is just the yachting equivalent of motorised free sailing except that the boats can't so easily get out of the way. So just a 'sail' free sailing session perhaps if there are enough models to justify it.
Concours - yes, that could be done on the bank but you will need a set of rules for the judges to work to - maybe easier said than done these days when the distinctions between RTR, Ebay sourced, kits, semi kits and scratchbuilt models are increasingly blurred. A Mayhem event doesn't really lend itself to the application of specific judging rules. Perhaps just best for you, Martin, to take a general overview and make awards on the basis of your personal preferences. Nobody can then argue with that.
The above would all provide a bit of variety from just free sailing
Just my thoughts anyway,
Colin
-
For the last 5 years and due to your request Colin the lake was sectioned into 3...small delecate craft
..bottom end...a straight running course....and a general sailing area....so something for everyone
Dave
-
I intend to bring HMS Ready and HMS M19 so a WW1 warship regatta would be nice to share one's mini fleet in.
Free sailing plus periods for Faster models, Special models (Those that are entertaining and quirky) Warships-general and the like would be great.
A Cabin cruiser concourse sail would be nice if the weather is like last year :}
-
How many times has this been planned, written up and then not happened.
-
Hello,
"How many times has this been planned, written up and then not happened."
Yet the weekend has always been very, very enjoyable.
John. :-))
-
Jaydee Precisely . This is not an inflammatory post, but an advisory that has been tried over many years at mathem.
It does not necessarily need to be structured for every minute of the day. There us a safe area for shallow or fragile boats. Steering course for those that want to have a go. Last year we never put out the straight running course and that opened up the lake. Club 500 and fast electrics can have a section of the lake just get together then go ask Martin so the lake can be cleared. Same as when the Ww1 review happened last year. If its going to be so structured like Warwick pool (which I understand) then a lot of people will get annoyed. The whole spirit of mayhem is exactly that. Mayhem. Not in any way to destroy boats or to put people off. If you want to do a demo, find peeps with similar boats ie steam, sail, fragile, plastic magic etc and ask. We all want to see these boats on the water. But as for having a set structure......lol you seen the weather I the past?
-
Sorry I mentioned the "w" word ......we're doooooomed

Sorry I mentioned the "w" word ......we're doooooomed

OK, invoice Klunk if your gazebo get torn away in a anti-cyclone!
-
Long range forecast for that weekend is bacon rolls tea bbq .....nuff said
-
You want bacon rolls again Sunday morning?!?!? :P
-
I Like the idea of a sort of sailing schedule, cos in the entertainment industry our schedules run to time for the first 20 mins then all hell breaks loose O0 so this would seem perfect for the weekend. I can bring a flip chart and pens and we can make things up as they happen {-) {-)
But an outline of the day would be good........hummmm %)
Now I just have to put back all the nice fittings on my springer after my 4 year grandaughter cleaned it...and her mum wouldn't let me give her some super glue to fix it :o
-
come one come all for the weirdest boat show you will go too

Many years since I camped. C in C Home Forces informs me we no longer have a tent <:(
I may have to buy one, esp since Beale Park will be two days in future, and not same W/E.
If worst come to worst I may have to drive up there twice, not wanting to miss anything.

Hi bob. I can supply cooking facilities for you if you get a tent. Or you could ask nick if you bunk in with him .....he is RAF though!
-
What time do you set stuff up on Friday afternoons?
-
Try friday morning from 10.30
-
Right oh. I will try to get up there for the mid afternoon to help.
-
Anyone planning on bringing their battleships to Mayhem this year? If so is there a favoured day, Saturday or Sunday?
Cheers
Geoff
-
My Dreadnought will be there all weekend so if anyone else would like to join in let us know and we'll sort out the best day for the gathering. :-))
-
Hopefully we will get the chance to see Agincourt afloat - I look forward to seeing her, but any particular day or both days?
Cheers
Geoff
-
Hi Geoff
I'll speak to Ron and Sheila Kingdon to see if they'll bring her both days just incase. :-))
Can't wait to see your Iron Duke again. Only 5 days left on ops then I'm home! :D

Happy times!!! Now where did I leave that penguin?! :D

Hope you've sorted the weather Martin. I've lost my gazebo flying licence {-) {-)
-
Happy times!!! Now where did I leave that penguin?! :D
It's having a snooze on the tug Afon Clwyd, according to Martin's photo below.
PS: Having some stowage logistics problems with my idea of buying a small pop-up tent, Lilo and sleeping bag, food etc. Looking at the smallest sizes available, with my tiny car, I would have no room left for boats >:-o
Yes, I'm daft enough to think I can cram a 1/96 HMS Agincourt in there. albeit in two halves.

OK all. Hope everyone is comfortable and settled.
At Mayhem this year, I have a reference special.
Among my friends, I count a certain Mr Dave Abbott. he has now sold his house in the uk and has moved to Malta. While he was sorting out his goods, he has given me 5 boxes of reference books from his time modelling. These will be bought to the mayhem weekend. At present I have not even had a chance to look at them properly so there will be no advance list of books. All will be for sale at very reasonable prices.
At the moment I have in my hand an envelope marked London fireboats plans and photos. Notably a picture reference of London Phoenix.
His build pictures of HMS Ives ton.
Reference pics of the dredger Esk
The Royal Navy by Wilfred pym Trotter
Steam on Windermere by g pattinson
The diaries of Lord mount batten
Iron afloat wiliam still
Hope this gives a taster.
Klunk
Ps I will also have some vintage rc gear. like
Futaba fd17m servos
Fd33m servos
Futaba FP R2L RECEIVER
PLUS SOME RADUOS FROM THE SAME ERA!

Yes I'll be there Friday afternoon and especially for the Saturday night BBQ. :-))
I've got a few drinks you might like to try! %)
-
Is the Wicksteed lake big enough to try this?!
https://youtu.be/aIoqKP1Q_Yk?t=6m48s
-
I thought somebody already tried that with a bigger car! Epic fail <:( <:( <:( <:( <:(
-
I have seen the full size version in the states, but love the model version.....am giving it some thought....one of those monster trucks from Maplins, rip the guts out and replace with brushless and lipo.. %) Ooooh
-
Friday fish and chips round the bbq
Sat night bbq round the fish and chips.
-
That makes food planning easier. I only have very limited space. I will bring some burgers and sausages to donate for the BBQ, plus a bottle of tipple, and hope someone will allow me to use their stove for bacon and eggs Sunday morning. If I brought a cooker with gas bottle I'd have to leave the boats at home.
Yes, this is the idiot who plans to fit a 2,140 mm boat in his tiny car %%
-
Good luck with your weekend of boating and other good stuff!
Looking forward to photos.
-
Don't worry Bob, tea and coffee from our tent, plus Martin does bacon butties on the Sunday morn, we can do you a brekkie on Saturday morning no problem. :-))
-
have a good time folks, Bob K enjoy yourself, bring back details/ pictures to entice other club members to go and camp in future years , sadly i am flat out with work plus got a car that wont go ( "xxxxx" DPF ) so car in dealer having open heart surgery - i will open heart surgery when i get the bill - thanks main dealers,i mean main stealers !
so wont be with you, but will be thinking of you all ...
have fun folks and take lots of pictures...
-
Guy you should have gone to an independant and had the dpf removed and had a remap....far cheaper.....oh by the way i can gtee you one thing....you still will have dpf problems in 12mnths time.
Anyway.....is there anyone from the Cheshire ...Lpool ...North Wales area going to mayhem ....if so could you do me a mahoosive favour and colkect a lead screw for my lathe..it is 1mtr long and weighs around 2lb and ill collect it from you.....Steam boat Phil will have it.....
All the best and have some PISH for me.
Dave
-
Remove the DPF and you risk failing your next MOT apart from the anti social action of spreading dangerous soot over the population at large!
Colin
-
What's a DPF chaps %% .........only thing that springs to my mind is a damp proof fillet, and I doubt they have one of those on a car.
Jim.
-
Diesel Particulate Filter
Ned
-
Colin sorry to contradict you but you are so so wrong....as the emissions go down big time.....but of course what do i know....er ah ha yes...mi am a time served mechanic of course
Dave
-
Dave, removing a DPF is an automatic MOT fail as you should know. I agree that the device can cause all manner of problems to the engine as it is an engineering bodge but basically it is there to catch the unburnt fuel in the form of soot particles and does so at the expense of engine efficiency which is maybe what you are thinking of?
I used to have a diesel Mondeo without a DPF and used to cringe when I put my foot down and saw the black cloud in the back window. My subsequent diesel Mazda had a DPF which caught the soot particles and was less anti social but the MPG was less. Of course all diesels have now been shown to emit toxic levels of NO2 but that is a gas rather than a particulate discharge.
These days I drive a petrol car.
Colin

you are so so wrong

Just the boats to go in the car.
Finish work at 4am so will get a couple of hours kip before driving up. Aiming to arrive about 11am. See you all there. Ps Nick I've got a bag of chemical wood for you. Medium density so you can have a play
-
new dpf ordered, and it will be going back in, - i do alot of miles, and already have a fuel efficient ' blue efficiency' car, the dpf is trying to protect the environment for all our off spring, and future generations after that..
removing dpf is an mot failure too - and i am pretty sure herr daimer and herr benz has spent alot of time and money with specialists and scientists developing such a bit of kit, -so i will bow to their knowledge, have it replaced and keep the remainder of my cars warranty intact...
interestingly enough the DPF is only warrantied to 2 years or 80,000 miles anyway

thank you Ned..........I learn something new on a daily basis..........sadly I forget more daily at my age, than I learn. {-) {-)

Mayhem at Wicksteed 2017 - is a fun 'come sail your Boat’ weekend for blokes and their families. You've spent all that time building it... put it on the water!
It's a very relaxed weekend.... unless the wind gets up then it's usually gets exciting very quickly, we've had Gazebo flying contest in past years! The Camping & Bar B Q is a big part of the event and is a highlight for those types foolish enough to indulge in such things! ( As you can tell, I've yet to be persuaded of the wonders of sleeping in a mobile room on wheels or under canvas! ) %)
The pond is a purpose built model boating lake in the grounds of a privately owned public park, like Alton Towers but without the need for a mortgage to get in! There is a car parking fee but that's the only charges for the weekend. There are quite a few fairground rides for the younger type humans as it is very much a family orientated 'theme park.'
We're situated down on the left hand side of the park, follow signs to "Mayhem Event" or "Camping field".
Parking in about 40 yards from the lake on a grass field. There are usually a couple of trolleys around to haul your stuff to the lake side. You are welcome to set up your own gazebo lakeside, personal, club or Trader Free of Fee!
It mostly free sailing with some demonstration events, e.g. Straight running, Warships, yachts, Springers, etc.
Most people are on 2.4Gig these days but there is a Frequency board for 27 & 40Mhz.
Best of all, Free TEA & COFFEE all weekend ….. if I can persuade Mrs & Little Miss Mayhem to do the honours again!
The whole event was conceived to get us of the internet, away from the workbench, off our collective arses and go sail our boats and actually come meet with one another! It has always been a well humoured events, one of the best laughs I have all year.
…. we’ll even pull your car out of the lake if needs be!
Martin - Admin :-))
-
I expect to see NO pictures of you guys wearing rain coats this weekend , but some nice sun-burn pictures instead , red faces from too much alcohol don’t count ! ..LOL
-
Phew, What a Scorcher! &. El Scorchio!!!
Seriously hot here!
-
OK , I'm going to attempt a couple of short LiveStreem videos from Wicksteed tromorrow!
Simplest way will be via FaceBook.
It will post them here (I hope!) - https://www.facebook.com/groups/108965742775087/
..... or here! - https://www.facebook.com/events/1942165796007409/?acontext=%7B%22source%22%3A4%2C%22action_history%22%3A%22null%22%7D&source=4&action_history=null
-
Martin can we post voice recordings on here? Steam boat Phil and captain Ron snore very well????
-
Scots lads here, Luton lads here, uncle jd and uncle bobx and Phil and Steph here.
This event is a model boaters event, you have great models on display and about 90% of models all sail.
To me as a model boat builder this is the best event to see both static and sailing boats.
There is so many model boat events in a year but this is the one where you can display your beautiful work and sail. No one will judge you. You have a boat and you do your best we all love it cause you have done your best and to a standard your proude of.
We travel about 600 miles to come to this event.
You have a boat you sail it, you worked you'd 'bottom' on it that is all that matters, get to the events orangised by modellers for modellers.
Boats should be on the water, they where built for it, but there is some great statics as well.
If anyone disagrees with my statement I'm sorry.

Right, up, showered, shaved, coffeed .... off to Wicky and get them Bacon Rolls cooked!
-
Thankyou for a great day at Wicksteed folks! It was lovely to meet some of my fellow Mayhemists again and see some astounding models and learn a few more useful ideas for building and finishing.
While mainly a warship fan, I did like the other models, and was impresed with the lakeworthiness of that minute yacht that plied the chop yesterday afternoon amongst the giant life boats!
After this morning's noise at the motel I am tempted to try camping next year (Or take ear defenders <*< )
-
How many boats were there on Saturday? From the pictures it looks like loads got on the water. We drove up from Canterbury and arrived mid afternoon to find one boat sailing and a very small number on display. We walked round the pond, had a second look at the displays and went home very disappointed less than fifteen minutes after we arrived. I've seen way better displays at Herne Bay eight miles away. I won't be going "up north" again soon.
-
Croakle,
Sounds like you are omitting a small fact.....
The wind was kicking up such as swell it was swamping models
Also it was so windy the sailing boats couldn't sail!!!!
You left inside 15minutes...... so you missed the whole point of the weekend
To meet and interact with like minded people have a bit of a natter and banter
Myself and 3 others travel from scotland and we WILL be back :-))
-
The weather had turned pretty nasty and had curtailed most activity by 2 ish. The morning saw a good selection of boats sailing with repeat performances.
I thought I might get around to talk to everyone this weekend, but missed a good few people today.
Did you have a conversation with anyone yesterday Croakle? I ask because the time would have flown especially with so many great models to find out about. I drove up from Sussex (but usually drive up from Somerset) and believe me, if I did not think it worth going I would not drive that far! If I did not have to leave thismorning, I would have been there until the traffic had died down thisevening.

Arrive at any show mid afternoon you would have missed a lot by the time of your arrival . Since Mayhem is an out door show it is at the mercy of the weather . In the morning the wind speed was low . by lunch it was getting up and by afternoon it was getting to windy for models to sail safely. Did you Ron Dean had 3 models broken by the wind . I stopped sailing at about 2 ish due to the wind .
The fact is you turned up late towards the end of the day expect an informal show to be at its peak . Try arriving early .
John
-
It was a shame that Ron lost so many models, and a few display items as well due to unpredictable gusts. Several of us did our best to keep things steady while Ron and Klunk ferried stuff to the van.
What was the weather like today?

Today the weather was hot.........and virtually no wind.
Again a brilliant weekend, spoilt by the high wind. ...but not too much!
2 early nights by the campers.....both well before midnight. Saturday night was particularly cold dropping to 5 degrees.
He's there was Sloe gin, as well as calvados and pastiche. ...and parsnip wine amongst other normal drinks.
Friday was fish and chips night and a few brave souls had battered deep fried haggis!
Saturday was the normal BBQ evening....but we started early. Normal fayre of burgers sausages kebabs, chops etc as well as plain chicken and a peri peri and rum chicken cooked by the Luton chef and the Scottish chef. Thanks all those that ate it!!
Sunday started brilliantly. Very warm and it just got warmer. Lots of sailing and many Conversation's!
Ballastanksian......I must have talked to you but I still, after all these years cannot put a face to your name!
Thanks to all those that had books of me and donated to the RNLI.
Thanks to all the Wicksteed crew for, as ever hosting the event. To Martin and Mrs Mayhem and Little Miss for tirelessly making tea and taking pics.
Little Miss, if the zip wire is open next year I will pay for you to climb the wall and go on it.
To the Scottish contingent.....gain a big thanks for keeping everything fun, especially to Dave.....trousers and trainers.
To all those that camped........it's always fun....especially when Jaydee made Nick move his tent as it was in his parking spot!
To Bobk ....... more than a few things learnt from you this weekend.
To all. ....and this is unbelievable. ....no sinkings that we are aware of! Even with all the high winds. I went in the lake twice to help build a dock and dismantle it.
Apart from Ron''s models, only 1 gazebo at the campsite was damaged beyond repair. ...but one of the Scottish contingent used the fabric Saturday night to keep warm. One other slightly damaged.
Overall a great weekend. If you are going to attend in future check the weather an turn up early! You might see some boats in the water!
-
Really good lot ,interesting and very different ,thank you 4 showing .
-
Another great Mayhem at Wicksteed weekend!
.... yes a 'little blowy' Saturday afternoon, which a couple of gazebos ... again, sigh, but Sunday started out warm and over cast and just got hot and sunnier throughout the day so but on the whole, a very successful model boat sail in!
First of all many thanks to the Wicksteed Park Model Boat Club, Steve, Nick, Alan, Nigel, Tony, Nigel, Paul, John, George Ringo, etc!
Ruth and Gina, our Coffee & Bacon girls
StreamBoatPhil & Steph, love you guys, true model boat nutters!
The Scottish Boys, bags .... and bottles of fun!
JayDee, 'Mr J-class', The irrepressible 'Klunk'! The Ingenious Bob K, John and his Celestine, Steve and his enormous TID!
Peterborough & Coventry, King Lear clubs.
Karl & Flo, Linkspan Models.
Ron Dean, for being such a loyal supporter of the weekend.
And every single model boat ( and it's builder / owner) that came to the weekend .... and all the wives dragged along too! ok2
Many thanks for a Really enjoyable weekend Chaps & Girls!!
Martin, Ruth, Gina.

Wow !! A super two and a half days, seeing as I had previously only gone for day visits.
First time I have been in a tent for nearly forty years. Thanks to Klunk and the camp site team for helping put my mini tent up and being so friendly and welcoming. Nice fish & chips dinner Friday, very fun BBQ Sunday. Two nice cooked breakfasts helped to warm the heart after chilly nights.
The Bacon butties and hot cuppa's at the Mayhem family table are always special.
Friday and Saturday were a (bit) windy but I still sailed my ultra low freeboard Polyphemus and Royal Marine. The projected storm passed by with only a few little damp things for a short while. Quite a few boats were still being run until late on Saturday.
Sunday was awesome weather. very low wind and plenty of sun. Always nice to chat with so many Mayhem colleagues. Ballastanksian: Nice to finally put a face to your Sign-in. I was totally surprised by Ron Dean slipping up on me with a brand new Agincourt hull. (See Agincourt thread for photo)
A complete battle squadron in line astern was a sight that blew the mind. HMS Iron Duke with guns firing, HMS Dreadnaught, HMS Superb, and HMS Rodney, escorted by HMS Suffolk. All mega big ships.
Nick & Steve's Admiralty Train Ferry seems to look better each time I see it, and the sub X1 cuts a fine figure on the water. Lots of very early TBD's in various guises, plus some unusual Japanese warships.
I must apologise to Ron K for spending much of the day drooling over his awesomely detailed HMS Agincourt.
-
Unfortunately it seems that some still don't understand the Mayhem Weekend.
It isn't your usual model boat show.
It is a way for internet Forum members to meet, chat, interact and get to know each other.
That is it.
Oh yes and have some fun sailing model boats.
I have made some good friends here over the years and even got to see young Colin from Glasgow Richmond after a gap of about 20 yrs and about 2'6 in height.

Evening All :-)) :-)) :-))
Wicky Weekend!!! What can we say?
Thanks to all who make this great event what it is - it is truly one of a kind. Where else can you see Ron Dean shrug off the fact that a number of his wonderful models got trashed by the gusts of wind that blew them and their display cases to kingdom come. Most modellers would have been fuming and gnashing but not Ron - it was more a case of 'another cuppa then and where's me chocolate buiscuit?' That is the spirit of Wicky!!!!!
Flo and I had a cracking time on Saturday in spite of the wind. We sailed both the Norland and the Pride of Hythe and neither sank or turned turtle.......they both had a hell of a list at times mind!!!!! So sorry and disappointed that we couldn't stay for today as well but I needed to be in West Wales delivering some kits. It was great to meet up with friends again and chew the fat although I was sorry not to meet up with Ballastanksian.........at least, I am sure we didn't speak unless you tell me otherwise :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed: .
Next year - the whole weekend from Friday to Sunday O0 O0 O0
Carl (and Flo, of course!)

Mr and Mrs Zippy thoroughly enjoyed another great show blessed with glorious weather and calm waters on Sunday,
allowing Wallace and Gromit's steam paddler to make her 'Grandest Day Out' to date -
chugging half way around the circumference of the lake until the Meths ran out !
Nice to see friends old and new in action enjoying their hobby having FUN on the water -
stark contrast to the formal atmosphere indoors in the cold at Warwick in November where many will meet again.
Big thanks to all involved in this special unique event.
regards Paul

I do like the Slow motion pictures. What a difference it makes, well done Martin.
Superb filming. Very impressive. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
ken
ps, sorry I couldn't be there.
-
There is always next year Ken.
And I thought John's yacht was graceful and then you put those films of Rodney up! Two beautiful vessels.
Carl, I was loitering around your stand on Saurday morning when you were launching a ferry. I was going to come back on the Sunday and have a natter but an early departure for us both made that a no go!
Next year we shall have a chinwag.
Klunk, I put Bob's Agincourt hull in the water on Saturday afternoon for Ron to fill with an obscene amount of lead:O)
-
Hey Ken, nothing sank. %)
Klunk nor Phil didn't any salvage rights!
-
Klunk, I put Bob's Agincourt hull in the water on Saturday afternoon for Ron to fill with an obscene amount of lead:O)
And it didn't sink (makes a change for me), so no salvage rights. A big weight 'till I complete this one.

Hello,
Well, it all happened again !!!.
Wicksteed could not be pre-planned, an Event that is SO enjoyable just happens !!.
Meeting old friends and spending Time with them, laughing and joking is beyond planning.
Saying Good Bye at the end was quite emotional !.
I had a wonderful time - - - roll on the next one.
John. :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Really happy you lads had the Wicky Weekend.
Would have loved to be there but I have to blame
SWIMBO's parents as she was born on the 27/5/??
Last time I was there we originated the game of
Gazebo Levitation (2010) and it came back this
year %%
I amazed you have a moan from a visitor, Rain Hail
Showers of frogs, it is the Meeting of the Year :-))
P.S. for ?? Read 47, so Milestone 70.

Ah well, another Mayhem Weekend ended and what a great time we had. I would like to thank all those who make this event such a hit. Nick and the Wicksteed gang, the irrepressible Klunk for his boundless energy, the Luton boys, Phil and his lovely Apprentice, Jaydee, Bob K, Ron Dean, all the clubs who make the time to attend and last but not least, Martin and Mrs and Miss Mayhem for all their hard work.
We travel over 700 mies to attend this event and for canny Scots like us, to part with our well earned groats to attend year in, year out, is testament to its huge success.
See you again next year, my fellow Mayhemers, I'm looking forward to it already :-))
-
Hey Ken, nothing sank. %)
Klunk nor Phil didn't any salvage rights!
Does that mean I get to keep the cup. {-) {-) {-) {-)

A really great weekend - glad I went both days this time! Thank you to all the Mayhemers and Clubs that support it & make it a success.
Great to catch up with fellow enthusiasts (the usual suspects...) & meet some new boaters!
Brilliant to see the collection of 1/96 scale warships out on Sunday Morning, need to work on our fleet manouevers a bit though
Already put in the request to C in C Home Fleet for day release next year ok2

Well the apprentice and I are now back in Normandy, what a great weekend we had, OK so after a little breeze on the Saturday afternoon we will once again require another gazebo, but hey, every 3 years isn't that bad. It was as always great to catch up with old friends and make some new ones this year. from the Friday night fish and chips right through to a few drinks with lads north of the boarder ( and the interlopers....not invited) on the Sunday night fun was had.
Some great models both on and off the water and lots of great banter with all, if I missed boring you on steam I will find you next year {-)
Thanks to all involved but especially Little Miss Mayhem, Mrs Mayhem.....oh and him Mayhem
And all others who have already been mentioned, thank you.
And of course Steamboatapperntice who traveled on the roof so I could get the v important Mayhem tea urn in the car..... O0
Looking forward to next year....... :-))

Hi Jonty. A really small one about 10 inches long?

Not that small. Are you sure it was a TID? There was a Revell conversion of a trawler (I think) about that size.

Nope definitely a tid tug

Hi Baloo,
Could be arranged, I have an assortment of loud shirts collected over the years,
they went with the territory working in graphics etc,
but none so vibrant as our Leader/Martin the Guv'nors glorious range !
Hoping to be at the Lifeboat event at King Lear Model Boat Club on 18th June,
but may be travelling back from hols pending how things go.
Wonders if anyone will have a Shannon or part built Shannon on the water by the 18th June,
would be nice to see one in action, now there's a challenge for Lifeboat enthusiasts.
