Title: What order to spray?
Post by: Norman Castle on April 18, 2016, 06:27:57 pm
Now that the weather's a bit more like, I'm going to have a go at spraying the Springer I'm now building with Halford's rattle cans.  This is totally new to me, so ...

I want yellow below the waterline, black above it and a grey deck. Given that the deck is mostly flush with the hull, in what order do I spray?

There's a 6mm thick gunwale round the stern, the inboard face of which will be deck colour with the top and outer face black.  Is there any trick way of getting a neat edge to the boundary between the colours, or is it just a case of careful masking?

With Halfords rattle can paints, how long do I leave the Tamiya tape on before peeling?

And finally, I can't see a satin/semi-matt grey of any kind listed, so what do folks do for a deck grey?  I really don't fancy it being glossy ...

Hi,
I always start with the light colours then go darker if there all easier to get to as for the tape as soon as its safe to do so.

a tip to get nice yellow . Yellow is a very weak colour so spray on to a good white back round for a nice finish.

I would use 3M fine line tape . it makes a very clean line . Best see the painting guide on Mayhem

That's exactly what I would have thought, only there's a sticker on the top of the yellow aerosol which says "For best results use grey primer"  %%

I think that is a general piece of advice for all colours anyway.  One could always add the white on top and then several coats of Yellow.

Probably grey as opposed to red primer.
White primer is available and would be my choice.

I have found that the grey primer goes on rather better than the white although the white is OK.

why i use white primer with yellow paint:

there are actually three different base colors to the original parts, gray, white, yellow, brass.   making them all identical with flat white primer makes the yellow uniform, and brighter than if i had used gray or red primer.

Many military modellers use white primer but then they do not have wear and tear issues to contend with like us modellers of working models so Grey primer with some white primer for the yellow.
