Title: High-tech ice breaker Polaris
Post by: Hande on April 22, 2016, 08:18:33 am

The new ice breaker Polaris is out for the first time in Helsinki. The photographer tells, still aided by tugs.
The original bridge doesn't show here, but it's worth following up on this one.
I try to take some pictures of my own.

I'm so sorry! There is a high-resolution picture. The group is probably the only model boat group of Finland. Finnish-only, I'm afraid.

The vessel sailed for sea testing in the gulf of Finland.

I will go hunting forpictures of my own and post them here.

Brian, I like...

Derek,
I think that is the bride work as designed.
A lot of the ice breakers have that asymmetrical bridges, all the way back to the Graupner Kontio model.

Hande, did the Gulf of Bothnia freeze this past winter ?   The webcams in the Port of Helsinki didn't show much ice this year.

There was ice - not for very long, though. I guess the ice period gets shorter every year these days...
btw, Helsink lies on the shore of Gulf of Finland. Here, little ice. Gulf of Bothnia tends to freeze from shore to shore every year still. The Baltic sea (further south) rarely freezes any more. There were times when one could ski over the Baltic sea from Estonia to Sweden

Thanks Hande, I was thinking of the tourist ice  breaker Sampo up at the top of the gulf at Kemi, might have been disappointing to book a trip on that and not do any ice breaking :((

If you didn't do already, search in Youtube for "icebreaker polaris". O0
There's a nice video about the departure for Apr22 sea tests.

In twitter there are pics, too. Same search words.
The official channel is @meriteollisuus. They use a helicopter  ok2
