Title: M.V. Caledonia
Post by: Sandy on April 28, 2016, 10:28:31 pm
Hi,

Further to my post about paddle wheels at the most recent shows by the Model Steamer Club of Glasgow, I thought fellow Mayhemers might be interested in this under construction model, M.V. Caledonia built by Andrew Petrie.

M.V. Caledonia was the third ship of that name to serve with the Caledonian Steam Packet Company and was originally the Stena Baltica built in Norway and operated in Scandanavia before the CSPC acquired her, their first ro-ro ferry.

Andrew was keen to have an operating visor and ramp and has managed to achieve that:-

There are two linear actuators running the mechanism through Bowden cables and an r/c aircraft undercarriage sequencer is there to allow, with one switch throw, the visor to open and then, after a delay, the ramp to lower.

It all happens nice and smoothly and nice and slowly and looks most realistic.

And here's the video:-

with not just one but two of the Caledonia's for a bit.

All the best
Sandy

Congratulations to Andrew for a fine piece of model engineering and a very satisfying achievement. Extremely realistic operation.  :-))

I  believe that Mr Petrie is also going to be building the same Caledonian MacBrayne ferry Jupiter that my friend neil was building on here somewhere.
I think from what Neil has told me that Andrew made the beautiful plug for the ferry and neil made all the moulds including all the fittings for the ferry.
I look forward to seeing Neil's ferry finished one day, but he seems to have hit a hiatus at present with work come to a stop.

I think he needs a kick up the bum to get him restarted.

Thank you for your kind words Jim.

I will indeed build Jupiter as time unfolds. My work does rather get in the way of model building with long spells away from home at times.

I must contact neil, haven't spoken for a wee while. A colleague of mine with a vector cutter is preparing the various logos, vessel name and port of registry for Neil's Jupiter in self adhesive vynl. He's as busy as me so has yet to complete them....

Thanks to Sandy for putting up the pictures and the youtube film I posted. Hopefully it will encourage someone to have a go at lifting a visor or opening a door!!

Kind regards

Andrew

The Caledonia is a lovely model, any more pictures of her?
I know of the Muirneag ro/ro ferry but there could well be some more kit of a Calmac ferry in my opinion. Many nice vessels of moderate size!
All the best!

This is a lovely model and a great credit to you Andrew.  That visor operation is first class!!!

As for further Calmac ferry kits?  Watch this space.......... I have been loaned a whole box full of Calmac drawings which I intend to work up into kits over the duration.  :-))

That sounds very interesting Carl, I know someone who will be very interested in those.

Good to hear Carl! Looking forward to it, and the Dalaroe model! ok2 That is if I can support you with the drawings soon! :-))
All the best to you and Flo!

Thanks for your comments Hama and Carl.

I'll try and sort out a few pictures of Caledonia and post them. It's taken quite a while to get her to this stage but everything is coming together at last.

Carl great to hear that there are plans for CalMac models! :-)) Caledonia is at 1:50 scale and is around 50" in length. I sail with the Model Steamer Club of Glasgow where we have a range of Clyde piers all at 1:48 scale for the paddle steamers and ferries to berth at. I'll post some pictures which will let you see some of them. Great fun trying to berth at a pier without an embarrassing collision!

There are some brilliant potential models within the Caledonian MacBrayne fleet, both present and in the past. Most would not be outrageously huge at quarter scale. Some of the more recent vessels would be something quite different however!

kind regards to you both.

Just to echo what Andrew said, there are some nice current Calmac ships. Some would be great in 48th scale which is 'our' scale in the Model Steamer Club. My favourite is the Isle of Arran... no hint there at all.  :-)  But the Bute and Argyll are neat little ships.
I work for the company that maintains Calmac's IT equipment and I get to sail on quite a few Calmac ships in rough and smooth seas. Sometimes just a little too rough to be honest. %)
Not sure if the Caledonia is eligible for the Creme Egg challenge though.  ok2

That sounds interesting sandy.

Please tell us about it.

Mmmm yes,.....the Cream Egg Challenge...... ok2

I'll let Sandy explain as I wasn't present when the challenge was laid down.

My entry won't be Caledonia however, but the old Stornoway Mail steamer the Loch Seaforth which is making slow but steady progress at the moment.... :-))

....& Sandy says.... ok2

'I work for the company that maintains Calmac's IT equipment and I get to sail on quite a few Calmac ships in rough and smooth seas. Sometimes just a little too rough to be honest'

I worked for a Government Department that maintained ships [Warships] & the best part of the job was post refit sea trials :-)).... force 8 or 9 gales @ 36+ knots............. {-)

Hi Derek

Andrew here.... Caledonia is my Model, Sandy kindly posted some pictures of the model for folks to see.

I obtained the two actuators directly from Firgelli in Canada. I'm away on business at the moment so can't post any pictures of the units prior to fitting. I'll try and post a link to the units later. Not cheap I'm afraid and I had a Customs charge to pay on their arrival at the doorstep........ Worth it though as I hope you agree.

Kind regards

Andrew

Hi Derek

Firstly apologies for not responding sooner! I fell victim this week to a very heavy summer cold. <*<
Not helped by being away with work and very busy......miserable!

Anyway here is the link to the Firgelli webpage with all the info you will need. Don't forget the units are priced in US Dollars and the exchange rate is not great at the moment. Import duty still to pay on arrival in the UK as well.

http://www.firgelli.com/L12_R_Linear_Servo_For_Radio_Control_p/l12-r.htm

You need to choose the stroke length required and the gear ratio for the speed or torque suited to your application.
The technical specs tab on the webpage will furnish you with all the details you'll need, including a data sheet PDF with dimensions.

Let me know how you get on.

Regards

Andrew

Well, I never did find out what the cream egg challenge is all about?

By the way, Pioneer, my friend says he's commenced work again on the Jupiter and to let you know.

Hi Jim

Thanks for letting me know. I'll get in touch and see how he's getting on. I've been away a lot with work recently so haven't had a chance to catch up.

The cream egg challenge was laid down at an exhibition our club, The Model Steamer Club, was attending earlier in the year. Consumption of a cream egg by a club member created hilarity as it disintegrated down his front! I wasn't present but heard the story. The challenge is to have completed for next years show, new, scratch built models for display,. The prize of course.....Cream Eggs!

So if you listen carefully you can hear sounds of frantic model building around Glasgow at the moment.....!  :-))

Trust that solves the mystery.......

Kind regards

Andrew
