Title: Drawing on the powers of the forum!

Attached is my grandfather's (brief) stint in the Royal Navy during the early thirties. He was invalided out (P.U.N.S) with pulmonary tuberculosis in 1934: it killed him about five years later.


Up until that point it was all "VG", "RR" and "Good Conduct". Who knows where he might have ended up?


But my questions to the members of the forum are:


What on Earth are those last two ships? I believe he was on the China Station for some time. And what's the word after Defiance?


Any help would be most appreciated!

HMS Melpomene named after a Greek muse? In 1931 she was a Minelayer, formally a monitor.
HMS Defiance was the torpedo school.

The entry for Aug 1932 could HMS Caradoc, part of the Fifth Cruiser Squadron. China Station.

Think the last is Drake.
RN Barracks Devon port.
This was probably where he was discharged from.

Absolutely amazing, the knowledge of members on here.

Try marking a 160 student notebooks! You soon get an eye for hieroglyphics, although I was struggling with "Drake".

Liz is seriously into genealogy and her researches take her back to parish records and wills etc written several hundreds of years ago - by hand, much on behalf of folk who could neither read nor write. Quite how she manages to decipher some of the writing is quite miraculous to my eyes, but you can see how easily the spelling of surnames was changed down the years.
The technical and historical knowledge of all things naval on the part of the collective forum members never ceases to astonish me!
