Title: T.S. Queen Mary II returns.
Post by: Nemo on May 18, 2016, 07:09:29 pm
This nice video shows the return of TS Queen Mary II to Greenock for refurbishment. I spent many hours on its decks as a child and this brings back many happy memories of the other old Clyde steamers who are long gone. I look forward to see her meeting 'Waverly' on the Clyde.
So nice to see her back from languishing on the Thames to where she truly belongs. Aye! :-))

Nice bit of tug-handling there for our 'tug-nuts'!

Hi Nemo,
I watched her return from the Dunoon side, a bit like watching a ghost of the past coming up the Clyde.
Nice to see her back though, and I hope enough is raised to refurbish her to a static role.

Is that a drogue she is towing to help keep her straight  as seen in in the early part of the video?

I would say so, Colin. That's what it looks like to me anyway.

Here is a  close-up  of her entering Greenock docks. Looks like she will revert to her original name and drop the 'II' bit as we have a 'Queen Mary2' now.

I was only in that pub, at the entrance to the docks, a Brewers Fayre, a week ago Friday and Saturday night with friends.

Pity she hadn't been there a week or so earlier.

The only time I was on this vessel was when I was crawling under her lower deck plating in breathing apparatus trying to extinguish a load of old hessian matting.
It had caught fire during some hot cutting operations.
She was moored in the Royal Albert Dock at the time.
I was stationed at Silvertown at the time.

Colin,
I would suggest it is the pick-up buoy on the end of a stern/emergency towline.

Missed this due to being in California, but very nice to see the Queen Mary is 'home'.

Here's a 1985 photo of me, my old 1972 Gran Torino Sport (Clint Eastwood who?) and my dad's 48th scale Queen Mary (not II) in the back ground:-

And here's some 8mm footage my dad took of Albert Harbour (close to where she is now) back in 1964.

Duchess of Hamilton, Duchess of Montrose, Queen Mary II, Caledonia, Leven and Ashton, Waverley and Jeanie Deans in Albert Harbour. Lochfyne, Talisman and Cowal at Gourock pier:-

The end of the Jeanie (on the Clyde) and the Montrose, but they avoided the monstrousness of the Monastral Blue.

All the best

'but they avoided the monstrousness of the Monastral Blue'. Hear, hear!  :-))
Great footage of those sweet old steamers Sandy! Brought a lump to my old throat! Just as I remember them, as I almost lived on Gourock Pier as a laddie.
