Hi. Everybody
I have a few 1000 coffee sticks/stirrers. :-) To me they look suspiciously like planks. :-))
Anyone have any idea of a plan to use them. Maybe fishing boat or cruiser.
-
Great for mixing paint :-)) Tend to be brittle and splinter in my experience but then I don't get mine from up market coffee shops :}
-
I don`t get them from up market shops either, but maybe truck stop is up market for you :} %) . Sorry, only joking.
Seriously though, the one I have bend really well when damp or steamed lightly. Can be twisted too and then they keep their shape.
I know I can use for decking, but I want to make the hull too. I was thinking also along the lines of this TAKA.
Hope the pic works

I reckon it would be possible though, like Matchsticks and Cocktail sticks, you will have a number of warped, distorted and frankly moth eaten ones to weed out.
I have to correct you though. You get a free coffee or tea for each bundle of 'Modelling sticks' that you purchase :}

Click the link in my signature that says Humber trawler and POSH Venture. All the decks are coffee stirrers. They are a bit thin for hull planking, you would sand through them before you got to a smooth surface

Lovely models Brian60, hope I can get half way there.
I think you are right about deck, it looks good, but I may still give it a try as I will be double or even triple planking it.
I want a bit of a more unusual shape of hull to bend the planks rather than use sheet.
-
You could make they hull by laying them up bread and butter fashion and then shaping. As shown in the picture.
In the picture I have shown the ends round, but in reality it might be better to trim the rounds off and bevel to get a good fit, to reduce filling later. Unless you want to show off the fact you used stirrers. You can also use half/third sticks on tight curves.

The Petrol Station I run has just had a Costa coffee machine fitted. I've bags of these stirrers 'out the back'. During idle moments (of which there are, should my bosses be looking in, hardly any %) ) I've looked at them with boaty-thoughts in mind.
Ours are apparently faultless, quality wood, and can be tied in knots when steamed and soaked.

I have two boxes of them ..... somewhere.
Maybe we should start a Mayhem competition / build challenge for a coffee stirrer boat!
Anyone up for that? :-)

Sounds like a competition and trophy for Wicksteed.

Snap! (pun intended) All the ones I have used and still have in storage are from Costa. I asked in my local for a few and explained what they were for. Every sunday morning when we dropped in the manageress had a few hundred in a plastic bagfor me! This of course came to an end when we moved here.

I'm up for some of that

I remember being at a model show and seeing a PT Boat that the maker had triple diagonally planked the hull with stir sticks. The following year he had done one twice the size if the previous one, but used thin plastic strips.
Regards,
Gerald.

Ding Ding, we have a winner......
You have to use your imagination but think Thor Heyerdahl
-
Well certainly the prize for the quickest coffee stick build!
-
I tend to glue decking onto a plywood subdeck, so the visible deck isn't really "structural" but more like laminate flooring. :)
Your coffee-stirs aren't any different than the 1mm basswood strips I'm going to use on Pride and Macedonian.

That's done it. I am finding a plan this week and going for the diagonal layer. Seems I'm not the only one who can't look at something without thinking. boat? How?
