Post by: BFSMP on August 13, 2016, 12:55:27 am
What on earth is this beasty.

Certainly not a wasp as far as I can make out. but it hit the windscreen of my car the other day whilst I was parking up.

it was just over 28mm long.

Probably a Hornet by the look of it. Alternatively it could be a Queen bee of some sort.

Yep...horse fly. Lorraine got bitten by one a week or so back, and damn painful it was. She was not amused...

yes, that's the one. raarty.

Tabanus Bovinus - the pail giant horsefly.

Thank you for identifying it. I thought I had sadly squashed a queen bee as LB had suggested, and felt rather sorrowful, but now I know what it was, I am pleased that I did end its miserable life. I actually thought it was an African hornet.

That's a clegg to a Scot, and very painful bite, too.
I never did understand just how such a large fly can land and start it meal without you feeling it.

General recognition feature for flying things.

If it parks its wings at 45 degrees (like the photo) and has big multifacet eyes;  its some kind of fly (or maybe a F111 Aardvark)
If its wings fold along the body perfectly its from the bee/wasp/hornet family
This sometimes helps distinguish hoverflies which often mimic the colouring of bees and wasps

That's not a wasp................this is a wasp. If you are not sure of how BIG this is, check the next photo! That's my finger next to the spider the wasp had just stunned. Why did it do this? Apparently they use the spider as a mobile food chamber for its eggs that it lays on the spider. Isn't the insect world nasty!
