I've decided to rejoin the dark side (after twenty years at least) for what will be my last ever build...to that effect, I've ordered a Krick Anna kit from CMB. Nice little boat, looks easy to put together with the minimum of tools and just the dining table to work on.
So...a spot of advice guys, if you will. Has anyone built Anna? Anything to trap the unwary that I ought to know about?
And of course...any recommendations for a steam plant for it?
-
i would expect a clevedon virgo will be fine. they're rated to push around 20 Lb (9Kg).
-
Thank you SB 66, much appreciated...plenty there to look through.

:-) Hello U 33 !
Pas de gros problème pour la construction de ce Kit; Bien finit par un fabriquant sérieux :-))
Juste à faire de bon collages pas trop chargés, car l'ensemble fini peut devenir lourd {:-{

:-) Hello U 33!
No big deal for the construction of this kit; Although ultimately a serious manufacturer :-))
Just make good collages not overloaded because the finite can become heavy {: - {

Thanks ever so much Francois....very interesting.

Rich looking at the box pic, something similiar to this is all you need.

twin cylinder virgo I suspect would be over kill, power and cost wise.
-
Another one to look at...thanks Kev, appreciate your help.
-
I would suggest single cylinder double acting oscillator, just remember no reverse, but a kitchen rudder would sort that.
-
Thanks mate, I'll do some research...
-
Stuart turner do a set of castings, you'd need to find someone to machine them, £42.00
-
Could be a little job for Ron... %)
-
Im currently machining a couple of Stuart ST oscillators for use in a Midwest fantail which I think is about the same size as yours.
The ST is more powerful than the Midwest engine as it is double acting and the Midwest engine kits are just to expensive now they are getting rare.
For the boiler I intend to make my own based on the Modeen upright design
-
I no longer have the tools, space or dexterity to even think about doing anything like that, Kevin...so I'll be scouring the likes of eBay, etc, for something suitable. I did notice the cost of steam plants...frightened the life out of me, to be honest. And I thought submarines were expensive...
(My Anna is 610mm oal, by the way)
-
about 150mm longer than the fantail then but the midwest engine is just single action so an ST should have about 50-60% more power ie more than enough. My main worry is having enough room/weight allowance for a half decent boiler but thats a while off for me yet. The hull should be ready for its first dip in a couple of months so will see what weight and space is available then. Everything is new to me apart from the engine and boiler so slow progress :)
btw is oal measured straight line stern to prow or is it the hull line, I have something in the back of my mind about being told about the racing speed of a hull being limited by the distance "round" the water line, guess thats displacement hulls which these are?
-
I was always led to believe that OAL is from the extreme end of the bow to the extreme end of the stern, not including overhanging flagstaffs, masts, rudders, etc.
-
thats what I assumed, all very new to me. Prior to this my only involvement with the sea has been as part owner and operator of a dive boat business :)
-
Hi rich, I have for sale a Mountfleet Cruiser built to a standard together with a Mint Maxwell Hemmings Max 11 steam engine and boiler with certificate. Brand new, never been run, Bargain at £800. Nemesis
-
£800? Good grief man, I'd be eating hospital food for months for just looking at this... :embarrassed:
-
Hi, A Maxwell Hemmings steam plant sells for over a Grand and this one is MINT, The Frank Hinchcliffes "Cruiser" kit is currently over £500. I do think that £800 is a Bargain. nemesis
-
I don't doubt that for one second, old chap..worth £800 of anyone's money.
But out of my price range at the moment, and quite possibly overkill for my needs.
-

May be heresy, but if you can't make a working steam plant, why not power it with an electric motor and hide it inside a "mock" boiler and steam plant. Would simplify thinks and be a good deal cheaper
-
I did consider that, in fact I did it with my African Queen (the Billings kit) years ago.
It would save a lot of swearing, and a lot of expenditure, you're right...the more I delve into this, the more nervous my bank manager becomes. Another thing I've considered is to power it conventionally with an electric motor, and then hide everything in a wooden engine cover, with the engine controls fitted. With a bit of care, and with micro electronics, I reckon I could make a half decent open boat out of this.
-
Have a look at this on The Model Dockyard web site. It might be of some use ideawise/thought provocation etc
Ritalea
Ref: MAR2919
Ritalea: Freelance ‘Windermere’ style open launch, simple machine hull design, built in plywood. Model is 920mm in length and 235mm beam. Original used electric motor but could easily be converted to small steam unit. Two sheet plans, fully detailed
-
S99...now that is a real plan. I do like that...thanks ever so much, my good man...watch this space.

Hi U33
this is something I also came across

On the watch list, S99...thank you.

Overkill Rich, far too big for your launch.
-
Mamod make a small marine steam engine and a suitable boiler. May be worth having a look on there web site http://www.mamod.co.uk/shop-categories/double-acting-twin-oscillating-engine
A bit pricey for a tight wads like me
cheers

That looks nice, Frazer...what boiler would go with that?

A couple of options from Australia. The company are first rate manufacturers, I know the guy well who builds the boilers. (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j183/gwa_2006/Avatars%20etc/ozzhatcorks.gif) (http://s80.photobucket.com/user/gwa_2006/media/Avatars%20etc/ozzhatcorks.gif.html)

And thank you, Kev...that's a very compact little plant. The kit should be here in a while, so I get some measuring done and see how we go.

A link for the mamod boiler
http://www.mamod.co.uk/product-category/marine-engine-and-accessories
Iv no idea how well they perform although Iv seen one in the Kingstone Launch on utube that seems to run well
Good luck with the build
cheers

Thanks Frazer...I know absolutely nowt about steam, so I'm grateful for all the assistance you guys have provided.
-
You could also look at the Regner marine range for some compact and sub-compact steam plants:
http://www.thetraindepartment.com/regner/steam-engines/
Or Regner's original catalogue, but only in German, at the bottom of this link: http://www.regner-dampftechnik.de/
-
I am at present totally and utterly confused with all the information you guys have very kindly supplied. My knowledge of steam would struggle to cover a pin head, so you can see why I've confused myself so badly.
But, life and model boats go onwards...I've decided to build the boat first, and then worry about installing the power plant. I guess that's probably the wrong way to go about things, but I never build anything right, so it's home ground to me.
-
It is indeed much easier to build a hull around an existing steam plant. The way you want, hull first, steam plant later, is possible too, but potentially more difficult. I did it, and went through 3 different steam plants until I was reasonably happy with the outcome.
-
Hi U33
Not quite sure where you are, but these guys might be near and be of help http://www.msmec.org.uk/index.php?page=about-us

Hi S99..
They are about an hour or so from me, but...I've just discovered that there's a Model Engineering Club based in our village, and they meet in a club room just five minutes walk (even at my greatly diminished speed...) from my front door.
http://www.padmec.org.uk/
They seem to be mainly railway orientated, but steam is steam, whether it be on wheels or on water, so I'm thinking a visit is called for. The club room is licenced as well...

I knew I'd be doing it wrong...but, it gives me some time to raise some much needed funds for the steam plant, and also gives me something to do whilst the other half is working.

Rich,
It's one of the best things that you could do, not only will you gain Model Engineering experience but make some friends locally.
Most of the Loco owners will have their own work shops and no doubt will gladly help you in setting up a workshop in the future and it will be great company on a winters night.
George.

They have an open day on tomorrow, George....so, guess who's taking the other half out?
We've just had some good news, so there is a remote chance of maybe a shed on the horizon...

Have a look at my Streamlinea article in September Model Boats, that exactly what I did, looks lovely.
Cheers........Ron.

We've just had some good news, so there is a remote chance of maybe a shed on the horizon...
Having lost my garden wall to winter storms ( a somewhat expensive item to replace) , the rebuild did feature a clearing of the old 6x4 "bits" shed which , like me, was past its best. I now have a nice new 8x6 shed with a sturdy workbench on which to "murder" wood and metal in to approximate boat shaped objects. The cat which used to sneak into the old shed via a loose plank is still waiting for me to install a cat flap so she can explore the new empire ( and curl up in there when it suits her)

U33,
Ran across this thread and did not see if you every found your plant.
I wanted to point you at a chinese outfit that I have had good results with.

All different types of steam gear. The owner - Jin, is honest, but sometimes
lack english translation skills. He has some nice little oscillator engines that
might work.

Bonjour,
Example of Micrcosm work (no more tug available, I bought the last one) :
The steam plant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TO16806-3pM and the navigation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sdyREhRPj8
I also bought him a turbine, modified and tested by a friend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4jFwIQpJ5k
I confirm the little Goggle Translation misunderstandings and the time needed to receive the packages, but he is very kind and never discussed to change broken parts for free.
